| 'World's Fastest Ship' Is Powered by Modified Jet Engines Posted: 29 Jun 2013 08:55 PM PDT    Australian shipyard Incat claims to have built the world's fastest ship, the Francisco, which can travel up to 58 knots or 67 miles per hour. Described as a "high-speed dual-fuel vehicle and passenger ferry," the ship is powered by two modified jet engines driving a pair of water jets "This is certainly the fastest ship in the world," Kim Clifford, Incat managing director, said in a statement. "Of course there's a few speed boats that could surpass 58 knots, but nothing that could carry 1,000 passengers and 150 cars, and with an enormous duty-free shop on board." Viewer discretion is advised. A new YouTube video portrays what popular video game Grand Theft Auto would look like in real life — and it's startling to see in an everyday setting. In the two-minute video, YouTube user TyVerteLive shows actors recreating scenes from the game's storyline including simulated shootouts and a carjacking.
Watching this fictional Grand Theft Auto recreation may be imaginative filmmaking, but it also shows just how violent the game is, and how outrageous its scenarios would be in real life. | Record-Setting British Electric Race Car Reaches 204 MPH Posted: 29 Jun 2013 06:32 PM PDT  When you think electric car, "fast" might not be the first adjective that comes to your mind. But at 204 mph, Drayson Racing has a electric race car that surpasses the impressive speeds of Nissan's experimental ZEOD electric car, which Mashable covered last weekend. UK-based Drayson's new B12 electric car packs 1,126 horsepower between four engines inside a carbon-fiber-covered structure. As explained in the video above, it's faster than Nissan's ZEOD, which reached a top speed of 184 mph. The B12 only takes about three seconds to surpass 0-to-60 mph. | Cheap HP Slate 7 Tablet Reaffirms: You Get What You Pay For Posted: 29 Jun 2013 05:58 PM PDT  You know how you fall off a bicycle or a horse and you're sort of hesitant to remount? It's been nearly two years since HP fell off its tablet bicycle/horse with the wreck that was the HP TouchPad. HP has gotten back on the bicycle/horse (and, I promise, that's the last of this metaphor) with the pedantic HP Slate 7, a bargain $140 (after a $30 instant rebate) 7-inch Android 4.1 "Jelly Bean" tablet that should be a much stronger entry, given HP's tablet history. While it contains some bonuses, most prominently Beats Audio sound, HP ought not to have scrimped in such a literally in-your-face place — the Slate's screen. Read more... | How Fashion Brands Are Using Vine Posted: 29 Jun 2013 05:22 PM PDT  The fashion industry immediately embraced Vine, Twitter's 6-second video app, after it launched in February. It was no surprise Vine was suddenly so popular: The app was released just two weeks before New York Fashion Week kicked off, a time when behind-the-scenes runway shots were readily available to capture and share in 6-second loops. But Vine is much more difficult to make look beautiful and polished than Instagram photos, and brands quickly discovered that to participate, they needed to relax their typically stringent production quality requirements. Perhaps that's why, following the shows, most fashion houses dropped the platform altogether, only returning to it, in some cases, for the menswear shows in London and Milan earlier this month. | DOMA Decision Spurs Celebrations and Other Top Comments Posted: 29 Jun 2013 04:04 PM PDT  Much of the Internet erupted in celebration Wednesday after the Supreme Court ruled to overturn the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) on a 5-4 vote. The decision was a historic win for LGBT activists, and came just in time for this weekend's pride parades. Brands such as Facebook, YouTube, Gap and MasterCard showed their support for the decision on social media, and celebrities tweeted their reactions on the ruling. | Vine Withers as New Instagram Video Shares Take Lead on Twitter Posted: 29 Jun 2013 02:11 PM PDT  It has been only about 10 days since video on Instagram debuted, and Twitter-owned competitor Vine is already losing ground. Marketing Land used analytics tool Topsy to compare Instagram versus Vine link shares on Twitter. It found that Vine shares on Twitter dropped almost 40 percent between June 19 and June 20 — the day Instagram video launched In the week that followed, the Topsy data shows Vine shares on Twitter continued to fallMarketing Land reports that on June 26, less than 900,000 Vine links were shared on Twitter, compared with nearly 3 million shared on June 15.

That's a lot of smokeless vapor for an industry that only a few years ago looked like a fad. Now with substantial consumer adoption and brands and techies on the bandwagon, e-smoke might be the next big thing to blow. Napster cofounder Sean Parker is part of a group that invested $75 million in NJOY, an electronic cigarette manufacturer. Also part of that deal is Founders Fund, a venture capital group started by PayPal cofounder Peter Thiel, who ironically helped finance the anti-tobacco film "Thank You for Smoking." Read more... | You Really Should Follow the Interior Department on Instagram Posted: 29 Jun 2013 12:05 PM PDT  Government is not known for its excellence in using social media — but the Interior Department, which oversees the country's federal parks, has totally figured out Instagram. Just look at some of these gorgeous recent shots:
The Interior Department has been on Instagram for almost exactly a year, Director of Digital Strategy Tim Fullerton told Mashable "We launched our Instagram just basically to show the public all of the amazing lands that we have across the country," Fullerton said. Most of the Interior Department's Instagram photos come from department staff or from the public's submissions to photo contests. Interior is running one such contest this summer — the "Summer in America’s Great Outdoors" project, which asks parkgoers to submit their park photography to this Flickr collection. Read more... | Missouri Officially Recognizes June 30 as Social Media Day Posted: 29 Jun 2013 11:34 AM PDT  Missouri has officially declared June 30 as Social Media Day. Though many cities in the U.S. have officially recognized the international celebration, Missouri is one of the first states to issue such a proclamation. Event organizer Gus Wagner submitted the proclamation request online to Governor Jay Nixon's office and after a few follow-up calls, the request was accepted in just two weeks.
SEE ALSO: The Celebrity and the Superfan: A Match Made on Twitter Wagner says a proclamation for the entire state was important for Social Media Day celebrations to come. "We're trying to set up a series of events across the state to tie them all together to make it a bigger, streaming event," he said.
