Artist Illustrates Finely Detailed Comic Book Magazine Cover [TIMELAPSE VIDEO] Posted: 24 Nov 2011 08:39 PM PST
In this 11-minute timelapse video, freelance designer Dei Gaztelumendi illustrates a cover for comic book magazine Xabiroi from start to finish. In a post on his personal blog, Gaztelumendi says that he was given free reign to choose the subject of the cover, and so he decided to add to his “Post-Apocalyptic Kids” series. This kid, he says, is the toughest yet, and fittingly so — the illustration was also made as a gift to a friend who lost his leg in a motorbike accident last year. “This is for him, because he really IS the toughest kiddo yet,” he writes. In the video, Gaztelumendi begins with a paper and ink outline, which he then imports into Adobe Photoshop to build out. Given the frame speed, it’s difficult to pick up much in the way of technique — I’d love to have a closer look at the textured brushes he used, for instance — but the video is enlightening nevertheless. What’s particularly impressive is the level of detail Gaztelumendi brings to the piece. As one Reddit commenter remarked, “There were many moments when I thought, ‘This is impressively detailed,’ but then he kept adding more details.” The final illustration: More About: adobe photoshop, art, Dei Gaztelumendi, illustration, Timelapse, youtube video of For more Dev & Design coverage:

Lady Gaga’s Thanksgiving Show Features 8 Intimate Performances [SNEAK PEEK] Posted: 24 Nov 2011 01:24 PM PST A 90-minute special on Thanksgiving night revolves around Lady Gaga, who will perform eight songs and reveal private details about her life to journalist Katie Couric. Among her performances during A Very Gaga Thanksgiving, Lady Gaga will perform a duet with Tony Bennett on "The Lady is a Tramp" and sing “Marry The Night,” her latest single from Born This Way (see video below). The special, which Gaga directed, starts at 9:30 p.m. ET on ABC. "We all know Lady Gaga is a phenomenon," Couric said in an announcement. "This is a chance to see more of who she is beneath the wild costumes and staged musical numbers — Lady Gaga as a high school student still bruised by being excluded from the party, Lady Gaga as a devoted daughter and caring sister, Lady Gaga as a 25-year-old woman embracing fame and fortune that seemed to come overnight.” In a tweet Thursday afternoon, Gaga said she’ll have treat for viewers at the end of the special: “Surprise! … I will preview some of my new music video ‘Marry The Night.’” Gaga also recently appeared on Good Morning America, where she discussed the special and what she enjoys doing on Thanksgiving. “I just like to be with my family,” she said. “We just love to eat and eat all day long with my grandma, and watch whatever TV special is on, watch old movies and talk about the year.” How Lady Gaga Created a Web Marketing Spectacle for ‘Born This Way’In the months leading up to the May 23 Born This Way album release — and even now — Gaga has paved a path for stars and brands to get inventive with the ways they use digital and social media to promote themselves and connect with fans. Gaga is no stranger to success on the web. She remains a heavyweight on major social networks. The promotional juggernaut further ramped up her all-encompassing web presence, fostering partnerships with Zynga for the FarmVille-inspired GagaVille, Starbucks for a massive scavenger hunt, VEVO for exclusive premieres, HBO for a concert special, Rdio for free lifetime subscriptions, iTunes for a promotional countdown, Best Buy and Livestream for an album signing and Gilt Groupe and Amazon Cloud Player for deals. Below, we've compiled a huge swathe of the digital and social media initiatives behind Gaga's Born This Way. Zynga's GagaVilleOn May 17, Zynga launched the Farmville-style GagaVille, which garnered much ridicule from Gaga haters and laughs from even the most devoted Little Monsters. Jokes aside, Lady Gaga like other big brands this year found a way to leverage the enormous social gaming population, which is expected to reach 68.7 million players by the end of 2012. Gamers were able to unlock and stream unreleased tracks from Born This Way and bonus remixes. The game incorporated Gaga's style and personality with users having access to crystals, unicorns and sheep on motorcycles. The GagaVille campaign also incorporated Zynga game cards (buy a $25 card and receive the Born This Way album and bonus tracks for free); Words With Friends (use a Gaga word of the day and be entered for concert tickets); and RewardVille (win virtual goods to use in other Zynga games). Nokia Delists From Frankfurt Stock Exchange Posted: 24 Nov 2011 10:53 AM PST Nokia has been working through a massive cost-cutting downsizing program, laying off thousands of employees, closing plants, and outsourcing operations. On Thursday comes news of another consolidation: the company is delisting from the Frankfurt stock exchange in Germany. The company says that it has applied to stop trading in Frankfurt because of the “decreased trading volumes” of its shares at the exchange, which currently represent only a small percentage of the total volume being traded globally. Once delisting, it will mean that Nokia’s stock will only be traded on two exchanges: on the Nasdaq OMX Helsinki Stock Exchange and in the U.S., in the form of American Depository Shares, on the New York Stock Exchange. Nokia remains the biggest mobile phone maker in the world, but its fortunes have turned downward in the last 10 years as its leadership position has declined, particularly in the high-growth and higher-value area of smartphones, where it faces competition from a number of Android-based handset makers like Samsung, HTC, LG and others, as well as Apple. The company’s share price in Frankfurt (and elsewhere) been in decline over the last 10 years, but it has taken especially strong hits more recently as it has tried to turn around the company, by adopting the Windows Phone platform from Microsoft in place of its own Symbian platform (which has been outsourced now to Accenture). The first fruits of that new partnership are just now making their way to the market, but although the first device, the Lumia 800, is getting some great reviews, others are casting doubt on how well they are selling. Here’s the share price for Nokia in Frankfurt over the last 10 years (via Yahoo): Over the last several years, Nokia has delisted from other stock exchanges, including London in 2003; Paris in 2004 and Stockholm in 2007, the cost benefits of that made possible by the move to electronic trading that does not require presence at specific exchanges. Nokia says that it is now applying to the Management Board of the Frankfurt Stock Exchange. Subject to approval, it expects to delist from Frankfurt in the first half of 2012. Why Journalists Must Earn the Right to Teach Old Media New Tricks [VIDEO] Posted: 24 Nov 2011 09:36 AM PST “We benefit when we listen,” said New York Times media reporter and blogger Brian Stelter on stage at the Mashable Media Summit. Stelter spoke about his experience as a young reporter at the Times, a company that is symbolic of old media. He argued that one must earn the right to teach and learn the way a company operates before you start making changes. After spending his time learning, Stelter began to incorporate new media concepts in a way that made sense for a publication with such legacy. Apple Removes Game Subscription Service from App Store Posted: 24 Nov 2011 08:05 AM PST Big Fish Games made headlines Wednesday when it announced that it had become the first app developer to offer games by subscription through Apple’s App Store. That app has now been removed from the App Store without explanation. The app, dubbed Play Instantly!, let subscribers play dozens of iPad games over streaming Wi-Fi for $6.99 per month. It was not only the first subscription game service offered in the App Store, but also the first cloud-based one to our knowledge. To date, App Store games have only been available for individual, one-time purchase and download. A spokesperson for Big Fish Games said in an email accompanying the original announcement Wednesday that the company “worked collaboratively with Apple over several weeks to ensure the service met all their guidelines” and that “it was handled via [Apple's] standard submission and review process.” Apple wanted “to verify that the service we were offering was a good customer experience and that the value proposition warranted a recurring monthly charge,” the spokesperson added. It’s not clear why Apple has pulled the game, nor if it intends to introduce game subscriptions to the App Store in the near future. Apple commentator John Gruber suggested the app might have been accidentally approved by an App Store reviewer in violation of App Store guidelines, despite what appears to have been a lengthy collaboration period. Apple could not be reached for comment by press time. More About: app store, apple, big fish games |
How to Use Google Search More Effectively [INFOGRAPHIC] Posted: 24 Nov 2011 06:46 AM PST Among certain circles (my family, some of my coworkers, etc.) I’m known for my Googling skills. I can find anything, anywhere, in no time flat. My Google-fu is a helpful skill, but not one that’s shrouded in too much mystery — I’ve just mastered some very helpful search tricks and shortcuts and learned to quickly identify the best info in a list of results. Sadly, though web searches have become and integral part of the academic research landscape, the art of the Google search is an increasingly lost one. A recent study at Illinois Wesleyan University found that fewer than 25% of students could perform a “reasonably well-executed search.” Wrote researchers, “The majority of students — of all levels — exhibited significant difficulties that ranged across nearly every aspect of the search process.” That search process also included determining when to rely on Google and when to utilize scholarly databases, but on a fundamental level, it appears that many people just don’t understand how to best find the information they seek using Google. Thanks to the folks at HackCollege, a number of my “secrets” are out. The infographic below offers a helpful primer for how to best structure searches using advanced operators to more quickly and accurately drill down to the information you want. This is by no means an exhaustive list of search operators and advanced techniques, but it’s a good start that will help set you on the path to becoming a Google master. AT&T Acquisition of T-Mobile Looks Less Likely Than Ever Posted: 24 Nov 2011 05:25 AM PST AT&T and T-Mobile have withdrawn an application from the U.S. Federal Communications Commission seeking approval for a merger. It doesn’t mean they are giving up on the deal, but it does suggest it’s unlikely to go through. The two companies are fighting for approval on two fronts. The FCC as well as the U.S. Department of Justice are opposing the deal, and this latest development means they’ll be fighting for the DOJ’s approval first, without which the approval from the FCC would be meaningless. AT&T said it would record one-time costs of $4 billion this quarter in case the deal falls through. Although a joint statement from the two companies say they are “continuing to pursue the sale of T-Mobile USA to AT&T,” some analysts see this latest development as a clear sign the deal is not to be. “AT&T's auditors have now concluded that the deal is likely to fail and have forced the company to take that charge," Espirito Santo analysts wrote in a note to clients. AT&T’s intention to purchase T-Mobile has received blows from all sides since its announcement in March 2011, including opposition from the DOJ, the FCC and a lawsuit from Sprint. It hasn’t fallen through completely just yet, but we wouldn’t be too surprised if AT&T gives up on it even before the final Sep. 20 2012 deadline.
