The chef, author and TV personality was born Aug. 15, 1912 and would be celebrating her 100th birthday this year. Child is credited with introducing French cooking to the American palette through her debut cookbook Mastering the Art of French Cooking, which was released in 1963. Netflix Is Expanding Into Scandanavia Posted: 15 Aug 2012 04:20 AM PDT Netflix CEO Reed Hastings has announced the company's lastest international expansion: Scandinavia. Hastings announced Wednesday that the video streaming and home delivery service would be coming to Norway, Denmark, Sweden and Finland by the year's end. This is the company's fourth international move beyond the U.S. Netflix opened up in Canada in 2010, Latin America in September 2011 and most recently the UK in January of this year. Thus far, the international expansions have had mixed results. Of the companies 27 million subscribers, just 3.6 million come from outside the U.S. While Canada has been profitable, Hastings admits Latin America was less of a success. Twitter Helps Reunite Man With Olympic Ticket Within Hours Posted: 15 Aug 2012 02:44 AM PDT A lost Olympic ticket was returned to its owner within hours -- all through the power of Twitter. Cameron Montgomery, 29, found the ticket on the morning of Aug. 3 at a train station just north of London. Valued at nearly £300 (almost USD $500), it was for an athletics event that very evening. But rather than attend one of the Games' most popular events, Montgomery opted to find the ticket's rightful owner by combing through social media. "With each ticket having a name on it, I went about looking for the person on the Internet, looking at Google, Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter, but didn't really hit with anything," he tells Mashable in an email. (Montgomery later discovered… More About: 2012 London Olympics, 2012 Olympics, Olympic games, Twitter, summer olympics, trending |

Can a Video Game Tackle Alcoholism Without Being Preachy? Posted: 15 Aug 2012 12:44 AM PDT Video games are meant to be an escape. Become the hero or blow up your enemies. Games don't often tackle real-world issues because that hasn't been their purpose, and because it's difficult for them to do so. That is beginning to change in 2012. Games that force the player to witness difficult events (Spec Ops: The Line) or make tough choices (The Walking Dead series by Telltale Games) are being accessed by thousands. But neither of these tackle issues that any of us could face at home: the demons of alcoholism in a family. That's the mission of Papo & Yo, a PlayStation Network indie title released Tuesday. Facebook Testing Promoted News Feed Posts for Non-Fans Posted: 14 Aug 2012 11:19 PM PDT Brands may soon be able to advertise in the news feeds of Facebook users who aren't fans of their pages. The social network revealed Tuesday that it will begin testing promoted posts that can reach people who haven't "liked" a company's Facebook page. "Starting soon, we are beginning a very small test that will allow marketers to promote page posts to people beyond their fans in the news feed," says Facebook spokeswoman Annie Ta. "These ads may appear on both desktop and mobile." The ads will look like typical page post ads in the news feed, but will be labeled as "sponsored," Ta tells Mashable in an email. 2012 Olympics: The Social Media Winners [INFOGRAPHIC] Posted: 14 Aug 2012 05:23 PM PDT For months leading up to the 2012 Olympics in London, the event was hyped as the "world's first social Games." Jamaican sprinter Usain Bolt was the big winner, with more than 960,000 mentions during the Games. American swimmer Michael Phelps took social silver with over 830,000 mentions. British diver Tom Daley was the third-most buzzed about athlete, with close to 490,000 mentions -- partially, no doubt, the result of a widely publicized incident in which he outed a hateful troll on Twitter. A Real-Life Batmobile: Could it Exist? [VIDEO] Posted: 14 Aug 2012 03:37 PM PDT The Batmobile has been a wonder since its inception in the original Batman comics, but with today's technology a utilitarian vehicle like the Batmobile could be possible. By layering steel outside the vehicle and fiber on the inside, a nearly indestructible exterior can be built. International Armoring Corporation has been building these modern-day Batmobiles for about a decade and is the leading manufacturer in the field. While adding rockets and guns to your vehicle may not be economical (or encouraged), being able to continue your trip with flat tires may be worth the cost. In addition the vehicle absorbs any external pressure, whether from bulle… |
ZabKab App Makes Hailing Yellow Taxis Simple Posted: 14 Aug 2012 03:04 PM PDT Those dreaded battles in traffic trying to flag down a passing taxi will soon be a thing of past horrific nightmares. ZabKab is the first TLC approved app for hailing yellow cabs. The app comes in two versions -- one for drivers and one for passengers. The passenger version lets the user hit a "hail" button that signals cabs in a four to five block radius. Passengers can also see cabs move on the map in real time; a yellow cab on the map is free, a gray cab is taken. The app runs on GPS and gives drivers a precise location of where the passenger is hailing from -- even which side of the street they are on. ZabKab does not allow for communication between driver and rider -- t… More About: apps, transportation, travel, uber |
Can the Flipboard Model Work for Video? Vodio Thinks So Posted: 14 Aug 2012 02:20 PM PDT Flipboard is a great concept: Scrape the content from all the feeds you care about -- Facebook, Twitter, RSS and others -- then mix it together and dress it up so it looks great on a tablet or smartphone. There are a few apps trying to apply the same concept for video, including Vodio, which just launched its iPhone app (the iPad version launched in January). The weakness of the direct Flipboard analogy is that the majority of the content we see or share on various networks isn't video. Vodio gets around this in a couple of ways. First, it organizes content into various channels (Tech, Entertainment, News, etc.) so you can better find what you like, in addition to providing dedicated chan… |

Is the TrapWire Surveillance Network Really Evil? Posted: 14 Aug 2012 01:36 PM PDT Rumors and speculation about the digital surveillance system TrapWire have been flying around the web since the newfound information about the system surfaced in a recent WikiLeaks release. Public knowledge about TrapWire is scant. But it certainly has the makings of a global security conspiracy: ex-CIA officiers, counterterrorism surveillance and mysterious private intelligence firms all play a role in the story. Some commentators have portrayed TrapWire as a 1984-style massive global network of interlinked security cameras and other watching devices. If it sounds like the rumors are straight out of a spy novel and couldn't be real, you're probably right: The truth of TrapWire is… More About: US, World, privacy, security, stratfor, trapwire, wikileaks |
10 Things People Love and Hate About Pinterest Posted: 14 Aug 2012 01:15 PM PDT The Pinterest frenzy may have cooled, but millions of people are still buzzing about social media's overnight sensation. Once the network reached 10 million users in February (in record time, we might add), buzz peaked with 119,000 social mentions, an increase of 373% over two months. But a rush of new users meant Pinterest was under a microscope. According to this infographic by NetBase and SAP, people were quick to criticize the platform's technical glitches and UI shortcomings. Others felt that connecting Pinterest with Facebook delivered unwelcome "spam" from pin-happy users. The number-one thing that Pinterest users hate? Three-quarters believe that the social network is a gigantic t… More About: Business, Social Media, infographics, lifestyle, pinterest |
