Stickers, kind of like extra-large emoticons, are prominent on chat apps like KakaoTalk, and more recently on Path and LineFacebook recently introduced the new feature to its web chat, too.
With an abundance of stickers to choose from, even some at premium prices, it's no surprise some are much stranger than your average smiley face emoticon. What we don't love though is that private communication has more or less turned into an open stream for companies and governments to listen into," the Heml.is team explains on the app's official page Read more... Meet the First Baby Born After Genetic Embryo Screening Posted: 10 Jul 2013 01:20 AM PDT What makes Connor Levy, a baby born on May 18, special is that his genome was sequenced for abnormalities before he was born — meaning the doctors examined him as an embryo to ensure he would have healthy cells The process of gene sequencing is usually expensive and available at many IVF (in vitro fertilization) clinics. In Connor’s case, it was accomplished through next-generation sequencing (NGS), which may become a low-cost alternative
DNA is a relatively large molecule that consists of a chain of bases called nucleotides and DNA sequencing is the process through which we understand the precise sequence of these bases in some DNA. Early versions of commercial DNA sequencing methods looked at the entire strand of DNA from one base to the next, step by step. NGS is comprised of a new set of methods that don't go from top to bottom. Instead, researchers split up the strand into many parts, and then process all of them in parallel. Once that's done, the results are put back together. Read more... More about Genome, Babies, Lifestyle, and Family Parenting |

Google Brings Voice Calling Back to Gmail, Now Under Hangouts Posted: 10 Jul 2013 12:12 AM PDT Gmail users who upgraded Google Talk to Hangouts back in May were up in arms after discovering that doing so removed the ability to make voice calls. Google addressed this issue on Tuesday after it finally introduced voice calls to Hangouts. "For those of you who have taken the plunge and are using desktop Hangouts in Gmail, Google+ and the Chrome extension, we've heard loud and clear that you miss the ability to make calls from Gmail, so today, we're happy to announce it's back," Alex Wiesen, a senior software engineer, wrote in a blog post. Citing new features such as adding multiple phone numbers and video participants to the same call, as well as playing sound effects with the Google Effect app, Wiesen said the newly dubbed "Hangouts calling" is "better than before." He added that calls to the U.S. and Canada are free from countries where Hangouts calling is available, while international rates are reasonably priced Read more... Help Restore the Sea With a 3D Ocean Farm on Kickstarter Posted: 09 Jul 2013 09:28 PM PDT Sure, you've heard of going green. But what about blue-green? Bren Smith, an ocean farmer for Thimble Island Oyster Co., is campaigning on Kickstarter for just that: a blue-green revolution. Smith wants to change the impact we have not just on our land, but also on our oceans. His solution? Controlled, submarine gardens.
Smith has already started in Long Island Sound, with what is essentially a small-scale 3D ocean farm: Seaweed, mussels and scallops grow at the top of a water column, stacked above oyster and clam cages. Currently, Smith and Co. are using two lines (check the process out in the videos, above) to grow fresh seaweed and mussels, but they want to use at least 10 more — hence the crowdfunding campaign. Smith says the kelp absorbs five times more carbon than land-based plants, but can double as biofuel. On one acre, Smith says, he can grow 2,000 gallons of biofuel; if a network of farms were created that totaled half the size of Maine, all the oil in the U.S. could be replaced. Read more... Will.i.am Is Planning a Fuzzy Robot Invasion Posted: 09 Jul 2013 07:31 PM PDT Entertainment multihyphenate Will.i.am is steering his next creative endeavor into hairier territory. Or ... fuzzier. Apparently, after a trip to Harrods in the UK, the musician-designer-dancer-producer was inspired by a toy dog to create a hybrid contraption that's a stuffed-animal-music-player. Tech implantation ensued: The toy dog, Frankenstein-style, was reborn with a speaker for a stomach and a wireless brain. Will.i.am put a phone in its mouth.
Don't be fooled, though. This isn't going to be just another rendition of the other iPhone dogs already on the market. Will.i.am reportedly wants his idea to be more like J.A.R.V.I.S., Tony Stark's, a.k.a. Iron Man's, artificially intelligent computer. He wants it to sing. He wants it to dance. But most importantly (and, perhaps, revolutionarily), he wants it to execute household commands. Read more... More about Hack, Will.I.Am, Small Business, Entertainment, and Music |

In its latest two-minute clip, the NBA has released a montage of the best bench reactions of the 2012-2013 season. However, the real winners of this ordeal are the Golden State Warriors, whose jubilant team happiness is littered all throughout the video. New Flying Bicycle Can Soar 4,000 Feet Up in the Sky Posted: 09 Jul 2013 04:01 PM PDT Back in June, we brought you news about a Czech prototype for a flying electric bicycle. But now a British company claims to have designed a foldable flying bike that can travel 25 miles per hour — in the air. London-based XploreAir designed the "Paravelo," a bicycle that transforms into a flying machine. As pictured above, it looks like bike with an attached trailer that holds a flexible wing and a biofuel-powered fan. On land, the Paravelo can travel 15 mph. But once the wing is unfurled and an electric starter motor spurs the powerful fan into action, the bike "can take-off from any open ground clear of obstructions" and fly at speeds up to 25 mph for three hours — the amount of time that its creators estimate for fatigue. Amanda Seyfried Is '70s Porn Star in 'Lovelace' Trailer Posted: 09 Jul 2013 03:13 PM PDT We all know the name "Deep Throat," but what do we know about the woman behind the controversial 1972 film that became a pop culture phenomenon? In Lovelace, Amanda Seyfried takes on the role of the world's first porn star, Linda Lovelace.
The film tells the story of Lovelace's meteoric rise to stardom in the 1970s and how it destroyed her personal life. Peter Sarsgaard plays Lovelace's husband, Chuck Traynor, in what looks like a powerful performance Amanda Seyfried has covered a lot of ground since we first met her as ditsy but lovable Karen Smith in Mean Girls. Last year she showed off her singing chops as Cosette in the Academy Award nominated film Les Misérables, and now she moves on to a role that some critics at the Sundance film festival have predicted could get her Oscar attention. 92% of E-Book Downloads in Russia Are Pirated Posted: 09 Jul 2013 03:00 PM PDT E-reading is on the rise in Russia, but piracy remains a big problem for the burgeoning market. According to figures published by Russia: Beyond the Headlines, 70% of Russians read e-books, nearly a quarter more than the number who did a year ago. Yet 92% of those readers download their books from the Internet for free, compared to around 12% [PDF] in the U.S. (Other estimates place the number even higher, around 95%.) That's all the more surprising given that the average price of an e-book in Russia is relatively cheap, around $3 to $4. That's about half the cost of a hard copy, and just a fraction of the cost of the average e-book in the U.S. Read more... More about Piracy, Russia, Ebooks, Business, and Media |
iOS 7 is Already Changing: The Differences You Need to Know Posted: 09 Jul 2013 02:25 PM PDT On Monday, Apple released the third beta for iOS 7 to developers, which packed a subtle yet important change to the company's mobile operating system: An updated default font. The first two iOS 7 beta releases featured a brand new default typeface, Helvetica Neue Light for all on-screen text. This is a change from the Helvetica Neue (regular) typeface used in all previous versions of iOS. At larger sizes and in screenshots, Helvetica Neue Light is a great choice. It looks clean and modern. But at small sizes, the font becomes difficult to read. More about Apple, Ios, Tech, Dev Design, and Mobile |
Kanye Tweets 'Fuk You' to Culprit Who Leaked Unfinished Music Video Posted: 09 Jul 2013 02:12 PM PDT In a brief tongue-lashing on Twitter, outspoken rapper Kanye West blasted the person who leaked his unfinished CGI-heavy music video for "Black Skinhead," confessing it is "heartbreaking" to see the project he's been working on for five months debut this way. The video (watch below) leaked Monday and, to West's dismay, quickly made the rounds online. When the final version of the "Black Skinhead" video premieres, it will be the first from the 36-year-old rapper's sixth studio album Yeezus, which was released in June.
West is a well-known stickler for preventing leaks, although his protective nature appeared to have changed leading up to the release of Yeezus. At an impromptu Yeezus listening party, which Mashable attended before the album's release, West displayed the surprising nonchalant mentality, saying "this whole process is all about giving no f*cks at all."
