Why Online Success is Crucial to Paralympics 2012

Posted: 10 Jul 2012 01:36 AM PDT

Social and digital media's role in making the 2012 Olympics unlike any previous incarnation of the event has been well documented -- but they will play an even more critical role in making this summer's Paralympic Games a success.

While the Olympics receive relentless hype from media for months in advance, and athletes from typically obscure sports become global celebrities, the Paralympics happen on a different plane -- low-profile in the media and largely ignored by sports fans.

That, says Craig Spence, the International Paralympics Committee's media communications director, provides a unique set of challenges and opportunities for the organization.

Etsy isn't just about coffee koozies and repurposed doilies. The ecommerce site may host online storefronts for handmade, vintage and repurposed items, but it also fosters a future for many an aspiring entrepreneur -- a pursuit far more priceless than the items it sells.

In fact, Etsy's user friendly interface and robust marketing tools have rendered it comparable to eBay, especially in terms of the companies' sales trajectories. Between 2010 and 2011, Etsy's sales increased by 71% -- its 875,000 shop owners now sell an average of 2.9 million items per month.

The Oatmeal Shows Off the $211,223 it Raised for Charity

Posted: 10 Jul 2012 12:22 AM PDT

This might be the final chapter in the Oatmeal lawsuit saga, but what a satisfying ending it is!

Comic artist Matthew Inman, creator of the popular web comic The Oatmeal, has taken a photo of the $211,223.04 in cash his supporters had raised for charity.

But to understand why that money was raised, we have to go back to the beginning of the story. About a year ago, Inman wrote a blog post bashing humor aggregator site FunnyJunk for allowing uncredited images of his work.

Strangely enough, it took almost a year for FunnyJunk to react, but the reaction was very unexpected, as the site's owner claimed defamation and asked for $20,000 in damages.

Very soon, the lawyer repre…

Every so often, a tech product comes along that has the potential to change your life. Not in the way people say a smartphone or tablet changes their lives, but literally -- remove pounds, increase energy, maybe add years to your life expectancy -- all during your working hours.

We speak of the LifeSpan DT, one of the first mass-market entries in a relatively young category of gadget: the treadmill desk. We hope these things become commonplace, because the DT's current cost on the LifeSpan website, even with discount, is $1,299.

That's a lot of scratch. But what you get for it is the ability to shed calories slowly and consistently, almost without realizing it.

Facebook Yoga Teacher Fired For Banning Phones in Class [REPORT]

A yoga instructor who was hired to teach classes at Facebook in March says she was fired last month for banning students from checking their mobile devices in class.

SFGate, the website for the San Francisco Chronicle, reported on Monday that 35-year-old yoga teacher Alice Van Ness says her long standing 'no phone in class' policy was ignored by one student in particular. Van Ness shot the student a disapproving look and then the student stepped out of the class to complete what she was doing on her device. The student complained to Van Ness' managers and a couple weeks later, Van Ness says she was fired.

Social media is the news source of choice for Britain's under 25-year-olds residents.

Over 45-year-olds' use of social media for getting news pales in comparison to the younger demographic -- just 11% say they get news from the social web. For 33% of British people over 45, search engines are the online method of choice.

Between different social networks, Facebook is the most popular place to share news. More than half (55%) of people share news on Facebook…

Apple's products are no longer considered environmentally friendly after the tech giant asked the Electronic Product Environmental Assessment Tool (EPEAT) -- the group that sets environmental standards for electronics -- to remove all 39 of its products from its green registry.

According to the Wall Street Journal's corporate-technology blog, CIO Journal, this request took place toward the end of last month. EPEAT made the announcement last week.

The standards, which were set by manufacturers, advocacy groups and government agencies, state that recyclers need to be able to disassemble products considered green. This means the average person should be able to take apart the green p…

Taco Bell Introduces Edible QR Codes

We've seen a website made of bacon, so I guess it shouldn't be a surprise that someone has now come up with an edible QR Code.

As this video demonstrates, the minds at Taco Bell have spawned a QR code made of lemons and avocados. The effort is for Taco Bell's new Cantina Bell menu, which includes gourmet-ish items from chef Lorena Garcia. The codes are running in print ads in US Weekly and People. As one YouTube wag notes, the chain is "really thinking outside the guacs."

Malware Shuts Down Internet for Many, But Was It Overhyped?

Although a nasty piece of malware called DNSChanger was set to kick thousands of Mac and PC users off the Internet on Monday, no major companies experienced issues related to the so-called "Doomsday Virus."

The FBI shut down domains earlier this morning that had been affected by DNSChanger, which had been circulating the web since as far back as 2007. The malware redirected Internet traffic to sites with paid advertisements where cybercriminals reaped profit from unsuspecting visitors.

Although the FBI urged consumers for months to check if their systems have been affected by DNSChanger, about 275,000 computers were still at risk of not having Internet access on Monday, but no majo…
