1. Carnegie Mellon

Carnegie Mellon, the private research university in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania was originally founded by industrialist and philanthropist Andrew Carnegie as the Carnegie Technical Schools in 1900. In addition to the Wi-Fi running throughout most of the campus, there are a myriad of departments and programs having to do with all aspects of technology. Carnegie Mellon's Center for Technology Transfer and Enterprise Creation connects inventions developed on campus with companies that can bring them to market. The Quality of Life Technology Center focuses "on the development of intelligent systems that enable older adults and people with disabilities to live more independently." Carnegie Mellon is home to Professor Manuela Veloso, aka the "Robot Master," who teaches in the computer science department. Her longtime interest and study in automation and AI led to the creation of robot soccer which now has its own competitive league known as Robocup.

What To Do If Your Facebook Account Gets Hacked [VIDEO]

Posted: 24 Aug 2012 04:44 AM PDT

Your friends, your messages, your personal photos and events -- so much of our lives is stored on Facebook. So what happens if a hacker interferes with your account?

That was the concern this week for many Facebook users whose accounts were doing things they didn't ask them to do, such as automatically adding blocked users as friends. Complaints and concerns lit-up Facebook's Help Center. Facebook said the problem was caused by user error -- the contact importer has a "friend all" feature that automatically friends all of the user's contacts with a Facebook account. This incident wasn't caused by a hack or a virus, but a bottleneck in the "friend a…

No Computer Needed To Configure This Touch-Screen Wireless Router

Posted: 24 Aug 2012 03:26 AM PDT

If you have a hard time configuring your router -- or maybe it's just a pain in the neck -- a new touch-screen router aims to make setting up Internet simpler and faster than the traditional method.

Company Securifi has introduced a wireless N Router and range extender called Almond. The $80 router does not require a computer in order to set it up. Simply use the touch-screen to configure it. Securifi says Almond is the first touch-screen router.

This might be handy if you're setting up an Internet connection from another room, or if your computer has a virus and you need to replace an Internet connection.

The Almond was introduced at the 2012 CES this past January. Almond al…

Why You Should Talk to Kids About Cyberbullying [INFOGRAPHIC]

Posted: 24 Aug 2012 12:54 AM PDT

There is a lot to do before your kid's school year gets started. Hopefully, having a talk about cyberbullying will be on your to-do list.

According to a recent study by internet security company McAfee, kids are witnessing and sometimes engaging in cyber bullying. Almost one in four of teens claimed to be a target of cyberbullying and two-thirds of all teens have witnessed cruel behavior online, notes the Teen Internet Behavior study.

But only one in 10 parents are aware that their teens could be targets of cyberbullying.

Today's schoolyard is Facebook, with slightly more than 92% of teens saying cruel behavior takes place on the site. Kids say bullies also make attacks on Twitte…

Clothing Rental Startup Aims to be ‘Netflix for Fashion’

Posted: 23 Aug 2012 09:16 PM PDT

Name: Le Tote

Quick Pitch: Head-to-toe outfits delivered to your door for a monthly fee.

Genius Idea: Exchange your outfit for another at any time.

The average American buys 64 pieces of clothing per year. Driving that impressively high number are "fast fashion" retail chains like Forever21 and H&M, which produce trendy clothing meant to be worn a handful of times and then disposed of.

At the rate at which many young women are going through clothing, one begins to wonder: Why buy?

Lance Armstrong Stripped of Tour de France Titles? Internet in Shock

Posted: 23 Aug 2012 08:30 PM PDT

Seven-time Tour de France winner Lance Armstrong announced Thursday that he would stop his years-long fight against charges brought by the US Anti Doping Agency, though he admitted no wrongdoing. "I am finished with this nonsense," the legendary cyclist declared in an online statement.

The USADA shot back that Armstrong would be stripped of his Olympic medal, his Tour de France titles and prize money, and that he would be banned from cycling for life. Armstrong contends that the USADA doesn't have the authority to strip him of the titles.

Armstrong's lawsuit fighting the agency's right to bring the charges was dismissed in Austin earlier this week.

New Facebook for iOS: Same Coat of Paint, Better Engine [REVIEW]

Timeline Comes to iPad

Facebook Timeline is finally on the iPad. The feature looks and acts exactly as you would expect. We're not sure why the team waited for the new app to unveil the feature, but we're sure it benefits from the performance enhancements.

Click here to view this gallery.

Facebook released an overhauled version of its iOS app Thursday that promises to offer a better, faster, more native experience to users.

Mobile is crucial to Facebook's development. The social network knows its future depends on having a strong mobile presence. That means having mobile users want to use its app -- and having a way to derive revenue from mobile ad units.

The main problem has been that for the last 18 months, the flagship Facebook mobile experience -- Facebook for iOS -- has become a burden for many users. I frequently hear friends, family members and colleagues complain about how poor its user experience is.

None of this was news to Facebook. In the lead-up to Face

Microsoft’s New Logo: Top Brand Designers Weigh In

Posted: 23 Aug 2012 06:41 PM PDT

Microsoft unveiled a brand-new company logo Thursday morning, and graphic designers have given it a split vote.

While some believe the company has a winner with the new logo's simple, square design, others say it's too boring. (You can have your say in the poll at the end of this article.)

Sagi Haviv, who designed logos for the Library of Congress and Armani Exchange, thinks the logo simply isn't distinctive enough. By opting for a simple array of four colored squares, Haviv says Microsoft missed a big opportunity.

"Because they're so big they're in a position to do something great," he says. "And this unfortunately is not something great. And it's because it's a bit too generi…

Autodesk Lays Off 7% Of Entire Staff

Posted: 23 Aug 2012 06:30 PM PDT

Digital design giant Autodesk laid off 7% of its workforce Thursday, sources tell Mashable.

That totals around 500 employees -- including a number of 3D developers and several product managers.

Many of the layoffs were handled on a one-by-one basis throughout the day, following the company's disappointing earnings report.

"Our own execution challenges, combined with an uneven global economy, resulted in disappointing revenue results for the quarter," said Carl Bass, Autodesk president and CEO. "The changes better position Autodesk to meet the needs of our customers. We are focused on working through our internal challenges as rapidly as possible."

That idea: an open Internet.

The Internet 2012 Bus Tour, organized by Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian and General Manager Erik Martin, will travel more than 1,000 miles of highway to talk to startup owners, college students, political candidates and local media about the Internet and its importance to the American economy and way of life.

Some 38% of us think attempting to solve world peace would be a more manageable task than trying to deal with yet another set of login credentials, according to a recent Harris Interactive poll.

Did Samsung Just Copy Apple With This ‘Samsung Store’? [VIDEO]

Posted: 23 Aug 2012 03:08 PM PDT

You'd think Samsung would have waited until it was out of the San Jose courtroom with Apple, where it is currently locked in battle over charges of infringing patents, before it launched this.

In downtown Sydney, the Korean electronics giant has just launched the first of its new line of "experience" retail stores -- an experience not unlike one you'd have in say, oh, I don't know, an Apple store.

To be clear, there are other prominent downtown Samsung retail stores in the world -- one in New York at the Time Warner center, for example. But the Sydney store that opened Thursday is a new style entirely. Let's take a peek inside:

What Is Copying Anyway?

Botched Fresco Restoration Paints the Internet With Delight

News of an elderly Spanish woman's well-intentioned but bungled attempt at restoring a 19th century church fresco reverberated across the Internet Wednesday.

Octogenarian Cecilia Gimenez took it upon herself to fix a deteriorated fresco of Jesus Christ originally painted by Elias Garcia Martinez. The result of the amateur painter's work was what a BBC Europe reporter described as "a crayon sketch of a very hairy monkey in an ill-fitting tunic."

The shocking image sparked a wave of giggles and dropped jaws, and inspired more than a few parodies. British blog The Poke even started a #FixTheFresco hashtag to solicit images from readers.

We scooped our jaws off the floor…

Amazon to Make Big Announcement Sept. 6

Amazon has just emailed out an invite for a press conference to be held the morning of Thursday, Sept. 6, in Santa Monica, Calif.

Amazon rarely holds press conferences beyond its annual press conferences in New York to introduce new models of its Kindle Fire and Kindle line of E-Ink e-readers each fall. The fact that the company is holding one in L.A. suggests that it's a big entertainment-related announcement -- perhaps an entertainment console, or something to do with its Instant Video service for Amazon Prime subscribers. Obama Becomes First Candidate to Accept Text Message Donations

Barack Obama's re-election campaign became the first presidential campaign in history to accept money via text messages, the campaign announced Thursday.

Obama supporters on most major cellular networks can now donate up to $50 each billing cycle by texting "GIVE" to 62262. The money will be charged to cellphone owners' bills, the same way donations have been collected in the past by non-profits such as the Red Cross.

The Federal Elections Commission cleared the path toward political donations over cellphones in June after lobbying from the Obama and Mitt Romney campaigns to do so. However, the campaigns still had to work out arrangements with mobile phone providers to set up a sys…
