Apple May Already Be Testing the New iPhone and iOS 7

Posted: 02 Jan 2013 03:45 AM PST

Apple undoubtedly has plans for a new version of iOS and a successor to iPhone 5, but now we have the first signs that the Cupertino giant is already testing them in the real world.

According to developer logs The Next Web has seen, Apple is testing a device with a new, "iPhone 6.1" identifier running iOS 7. Furthermore, the device was sending requests from an IP address on Apple's Cupertion campus.

Even if the developer logs are genuine, they don't bring us any specifics about the new device or the software it's running.

Still, it's possible that the next generation iPhone is already undergoing testing at Apple, even though it's not likely to be launched before fall 2013. For co…

Leaked Photos Show Sony Xperia Z and ZL

Posted: 02 Jan 2013 01:23 AM PST

Press shots of Sony's upcoming smartphones, the Xperia Z "Yuga" and Xperia ZL "Odin", which showed up on Sony's website, give hope that the Japanese tech giant is finally ready to launch a flagship phone worthy of its name.

The photos did not come with any additional info, but the rumored specs for both devices include a 1.5GHz Snapdragon quad-core CPU with Adreno 320 graphics, 2GB of RAM, a 13-megapixel camera.

Oddly, even though the Sony Xperia ZL looks a bit shorter than the Xperia Z in the photo, the screen sizes for both devices are rumored to be the same -- 5 inches. Also, the front camera on the ZL looks to be positioned in the lower right corner.

As far as looks go, it see…

Tobii plans to launch the world's first consumer eye-tracking PC peripheral in 2013. A little larger than a pen, it's a thin device that attaches below the monitor of any Window 8 PC.

Eye-tracking technology has been slowly emerging as a viable technology the last couple of years, and it comes in real handy when you want to know which parts of a Facebook profile people actually look at. One of the leaders in the space, Tobii, is set to bring the tech to consumers in 2013 with a peripheral that works with any Windows 8 PC.

Tobii will show off its eye tracker, called the REX, next week at CES. The REX is a strip that attaches beneath your monitor (desktops and laptops are welcome), and it plugs into a USB port. Once it's in place, the device works with special software called Tobii Gaze to track exactly what you're looking at on the screen, letting you do things as munda…

Apple Store in Paris Robbed on New Year’s Eve

Posted: 01 Jan 2013 03:35 PM PST

There was a huge heist at an Apple Store in Paris on New Year's Eve. As police were monitoring the area around the Champs-Elysees for the New Year celebrations, armed thieves broke in and made off with an estimated million euros worth of goods, or just over $1.3 million.

According to a report in The Telegraph, four masked men forced their way into a back entrance of the Apple store in Paris' Opera district, and threatened a security guard. A janitor is said to have been "lightly injured" in the heist.

French police say they were a well-organized crew, making off with boxes of stocked material and loading them into a nearby, parked truck just three hours after the flagship store closed…

Netflix May Be Down Again

Posted: 01 Jan 2013 11:21 AM PST

Netflix once again appears to be down during a high-traffic holiday.

Downrightnow shows sporadic outages for the video service starting New Year's Eve. While there's been no official confirmation from Netflix, Downrightnow cites user reports on its own service as well as Twitter.

This latest issue comes after a prolonged outage on Christmas Eve caused by problems with Amazon Web Services' Electronic Load Balancing. While that outage wasn't an issue caused by Netflix (the company issued a statement clarifying the issue), many users were upset at missing out on their holiday entertainment.

Update 4:15 p.m. 1/1/2012: Netflix said on Twitter Tuesday afternoon that everything was fine o…

Press Pause and Learn How Your DVR Actually Works

Posted: 01 Jan 2013 10:45 AM PST

Back in the late '90s, the brand "TiVo" was eponymous with the term "DVR" -- after all, it was the first successful digital video recorder aimed at consumers. And although TiVo use is down from its 2006 sales peak, many of us have fond memories of the service. Remember the bubbly little sounds as you clicked fast forward? Or perhaps you recall rewinding the 2004 Super Bowl halftime show, when Justin Timberlake ripped off Janet Jackson's top, exposing her breast in the now-infamous "wardrobe malfunction?"

Indeed, DVR technology has impacted the way we interact with entertainment in general, not just television. Most of us are familiar with the optional DVRs incorporated into the set-top bo…

WordPress Blogs at Risk Due to Plug-In Flaw

Posted: 01 Jan 2013 09:21 AM PST

A security flaw in the default configuration of a popular plug-in for WordPress has put blogs hosted on the platform at risk of data theft.

The flaw, discovered by researcher Jason Donenfeld, is in W3 Total Cache (W3TC), a plug-in to the blog-hosting platform that caches content in order to speed up request times.

Since data are stored similarly and in searchable form, Donenfeld says it's possible to extract sensitive information like password hashes and database cache keys from any directory that has been enabled.

Even directories that aren't enabled wouldn't be very difficult to guess, a Seclist.org post on the matter said.

At present, all versions of WordPress are vulnerable t…

Time Machine App Transports You Back to 2012

Posted: 01 Jan 2013 07:14 AM PST

It's 2013. By now there is a mobile app for that, this and the other thing. It's safe to say, however, that there is a brief list of feats that mobile apps will never accomplish.

There will never be an app to raise the dead. No app will ever have a recipe for spagetti sauce that tastes as good as your grandma's. And even the most innovative hacker will never be able to transport you back in time with the push of a button.

How do we know this? Stephen Hawking said so.

If you've already come down with a bad case of 2012 nostalgia, however, there may be a cure. An iOS app called 2012 Time Machine will help you remember the year's highlights with thoughtfully curated videos.
