Viral Video of Russian Plane Crash Captured on Dashboard Camera

A video of what is reportedly the Russian plane crash that killed five people in Moscow Saturday, has surfaced on YouTube.

In the 30-second video, captured on a dashboard camera, two cars are hit by debris from the airliner after it slams into a highway. One of the vehicles is struck by what looks like the front landing gear, as the other car careens across the highway and over what appears to be a row of seats.

The deadly crash occurred moments after takeoff with just the crew onboard, killing five and leaving one in critical condition. We have not been able to confirm the authenticity of the video at this time. Watch it, above, and let us know your thoughts in the comments below…

Foursquare Updates Privacy Policy to Display Full Names

Posted: 30 Dec 2012 10:57 AM PST

Foursquare sent out an email on Saturday detailing updates to its privacy policy and planned service changes that will take place in January.

Currently, usernames are displayed with full first names and an initial for surnames (e.g., Kenneth R.) on the location-based social network. Starting next year, however, profiles will display both full first and last names.

"We get emails every day saying that it's now confusing. So, with this change, full names are going to be public," the email said, adding that users can alter their full names under the "settings" tab.

What's more, companies will now be able to view a more detailed overview of visitors that have checked in throughout the…

7 Bad Moves That Hurt Facebook in 2012

Posted: 30 Dec 2012 09:57 AM PST

Mashable OP-ED

Facebook has made strides in 2012. A billion users and a smart new Timeline UI punctuate a banner year for the world's most important social network.

But 2012 also marks aggressive moves to expand and monetize -- some might say at the expense of user experience and community. At best, Team Facebook is making tough choices in a delicate balancing act. At worst, they are tone deaf to conscientious users.

While we're a far cry from mass exodus, there are only so many missteps to take before someone eats Facebook's lunch.

Here's what went wrong in 2012.

1. Personal Promoted Posts

In October, Facebook rolled out a curious feature called Personal Promoted Posts. Us…

Bicymple is Functional Minimalist Design on Wheels

Posted: 30 Dec 2012 08:56 AM PST

As if the chain and two-tire design of a traditional bicycle couldn't become more basic, a Kickstarter project is taking minimalist bicycle design to a new level of minimal.

Bicymple is like any ordinary bike: it has two wheels, handlebars and pedals. But what it doesn't have is a chain. Instead of the drive chain running from a sprocket in the rear to the crankset the pedals are directly mounted to the rear axle.

This allows the wheels to be closer and another modification lets the rear wheel move independently. This severely decreases the turn radius compared to a standard bike.

The campaign has raised $16,6…

Michigan Passes Law to Protect Social Media Accounts

Michigan passed a bill on Friday that prohibits employers and schools from asking employees and students for login information to their personal social media accounts.

House Bill 5523, signed by Governor Rick Snyder and introduced by state Rep. Aric Nesbitt, "prohibit[s] employers and educational institutions from requiring certain individuals to grant access to, allow observation of, or disclose information that allows access to or observation of personal internet accounts."

This means an employer or institution cannot require that you provide them with your username or passwords for sites like Facebook and Twitter. The bill is known as the "internet privacy protection act."

NASA Sets Record with Ion Thrusters Test

Posted: 29 Dec 2012 03:19 PM PST

NASA has completed a 43,000 hour stress test -- a record for ion thrusters -- on a new rocket propulsion system that could extend future space travel to farther reaches of the solar system.

Developed by NASA's Evolutionary Xenon Thruster Project, the 7-kilowatt ion thruster can burn 10-12 times longer than the conventional chemical thrusters used today. Though not practical for manned-spaceflight, the system could power exploratory rockets that reach outer planets and their moons.

While the rest of us are trying to shed the pounds from our holiday feasts, Jamie McDonald had a feast of his own.

The professional eater downs the entire 11-piece Hobbit menu at Denny's in less than 20 minutes.

Comprised of dishes such as Frodo's Pot Roast, The Ring Burger and Bilbo's Berry Smoothie, the egregious 8610-calorie menu is a truck load of gluttony. All plates total: 9.75 pounds.

McDonald's finishes every plate in 19 minutes and 25 seconds, though he started the timer a little late. We bet he won't be hankering for second breakfast anytime soon.

Google Promotes iOS Apps After Maps Success

Posted: 29 Dec 2012 12:18 PM PST

Basking in the successful relaunch of Google Maps for iOS, the search company has debuted ads promoting its apps for Apple's mobile operating system.

The ad, captured in the YouTube video above, aims to recruit developers by encouraging them to "reshape Google for iOS." It then goes on to list several of its iOS apps, including Google Search, YouTube, Chrome and Gmail.

In a Q&A, Google Search engineer Ken Bongort says most people don't know that the company has iOS mobile-apps teams.

Watch Scientists Move Discs With Nothing But Light

Posted: 29 Dec 2012 10:13 AM PST

Making our dreams of traveling via hoverboard a less-distant reality, Japanese researchers have developed a way to move magnetically levitated graphite discs with nothing but light.

Depending on where the light (in the form of a laser beam) is focused, it controls the direction that the disc travels, according to a study by scientists at Aoyama Gakuin University. The laser changes the temperature of the graphite, which alters how the disc interacts with its magnetic field, resulting in movement.

Check out the video, above, to see the disc in action. Whether this discovery is a precursor to Marty McFly-esque hoverboards, however, remains to be seen.

How soon do you think we'll be f…

Apple Spares Samsung Galaxy S III Mini From Patent Infringement Case

Posted: 29 Dec 2012 07:59 AM PST

As the year draws to a close, Apple has withdrawn its patent claims against one of Samsung's allegedly infringing products. According to Reuters, Apple has dropped its infringement case against the Samsung Galaxy S III Mini.

The Galaxy S III Mini is an Android smartphone that is equipped with, most notably, a high-end Super AMOLED display.

Released just last month, the Galaxy S III Mini was not included in the landmark $1 billion lawsuit that concluded earlier this year in favor of Apple. However, the device was added last month by Apple to its ongoing patent case against Samsung on account of its availability in the U.S. through Amazon.com.

But Samsung maintained that it is not "ma…
