Twitter’s Surprising Reaction to the Meningitis Outbreak

Posted: 16 Oct 2012 01:31 AM PDT

When a dangerous disease outbreak hits social media, the connected generation trusts some governmental agencies more than others, and Twitter users tend not to panic. These are the main takeaways of an analysis of tweets sent in the past month in regards to the recent meningitis outbreak. The data was collected by iMedSocial, a social media consultancy in public health industries, using SDL|SM2, a tool that analyzes tweets and other social media.

Looking at tweets sent after news of the outbreak came out, Twitter users searched for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) more often than the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The meningitis outbreak, which was first repo…

The FBI's Internet Crime Complaint Center is warning smartphone users of malware that targets Android operating systems.

"Loozon" and "FinFisher" are the latest known versions of this type of malware, according to the IC3, which investigates Internet-related criminal complaints. The organization is a partnership between the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Nation White Collar Crime Center.

The malware lures victims in different ways. One advertises itself as a "work at home" opportunity that promises a lucrative payday just for sending out email; an attached link then leads to a website that spreads Loozon to its target, IC3 says in a release.

"The malicious application…

Samsung Aims to Top PC Market with Windows 8 Devices

Posted: 15 Oct 2012 11:16 PM PDT

Samsung Windows 8 lineup

Samsung is serious about being a contender in the PC market. The company officially unveiled its line of Windows 8 PCs in the U.S. Monday evening, including tablets as well as touch-enabled laptops and all-in-one designs. With the engine of Windows 8, Samsung aims to land in the top 5 American PC makers by 2015.

You might wonder why the Korean electronics giant didn't aim higher, but their current goal is more realistic than lofty. Right now, it barely registers in market share. When Lenovo and Hewlett-Packard were duking it out over the number-one spot last week, Samsung was relegated to the "Others" label, below Acer, Asus and Dell.

With Windows 8, Samsung aims to change…

From Ada Lovelace to Marissa Mayer: The Rise of Women in Tech [INFOGRAPHIC]

Did you know that Ada Lovelace, a computer scientist from England, is considered to be the first computer programmer? With her code-like language, she created a model for Charles Babbage's analytical engine in the mid-1800s.

Nearly two centuries later, there are some very impressive women working in technology, such as Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer and Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg. However, women still only make up just 25% of the workforce in STEM -- that is, science, technology, engineering and mathematics -- careers.

This infographic takes a look at some of the brilliant ladies whose contributions to the STEM fields are an inspiration to all women -- and men.

Twitter is Experiencing Outages

Posted: 15 Oct 2012 06:05 PM PDT

Twitter was having a rough night on Monday. The service was working intermittently, causing the term "Twitter is Over Capacity" to trend nationally on the microblogging service.

Twitter addressed the glitch on its blog Monday night, stating "Users may be experiencing issues accessing Twitter. Our engineers are currently working to resolve the issue."

Pingdom, which monitors Twitter's uptime, reports that the service has not been down for a moment all month. Twitter also hit 100% uptime in September. Its last major outage was on June 21 -- the biggest the site had experienced in eight months.

The technical issues -- not a full-blown outage -- led to a few memorable tweets on the…

Is it Possible to Travel Faster Than the Speed of Light? [STUDY]

Posted: 15 Oct 2012 04:55 PM PDT

Albert Einstein first published his theory of special relativity back in 1905. Although the physics are complex, the theory has one simple rule: the speed of light cannot be broken. And, since then, it's kept its place as the universal "top speed."

Scientists at the University of Adelaide in South Australia, however, published a study that expanded on Einstein's original formulas. The new models, they say, suggest that speeds faster than the speed of light might be (theoretically) possible.

Low Income Students’ Test Scores Leap 30% With Smartphone Use

Posted: 15 Oct 2012 03:54 PM PDT

Cellphones are banned from many schools -- at least from the classroom -- because students play games, text friends and do other activities that distract them from learning. But mobile technology for students in a classroom setting isn't always a hindrance to good grades and learning.

Qualcomm's Wireless Reach Initiative aims to conquer the digital divide between those who can and can't afford wireless Internet access. After smartphones were distributed to low income students, standardized test performance drastically increased because students could more easily communicate with their peers and access information throughout the day (and night).

The brand also shared the footage online a la Red Bull thanks to a GoPro camera attached to the chocolate bar. Yes, the Space Jump Mattered

Posted: 15 Oct 2012 01:58 PM PDT

Mashable OP-ED: This post reflects the opinions of the author and not necessarily those of Mashable as a publication.

Now that Felix Baumgartner's supersonic freefall from the edge of space has entered the record books, it's time for the realists to step in and remind us that what we saw wasn't really all that big a deal.

You've probably heard their arguments already: it was a stunt, sponsored by a beverage brand that wants to associate itself with excessively energetic activity. It was only a few thousand feet higher than a jump U.S. Air Force officer Joseph Kittinger made, 52 years ago. Skydiving from 128,000 feet did not add a whole lot to our scientific knowledge.

All of which is essentially true. And all of which couldn't be further from the point if it tumbled out of a plane on the opp…
