Father of the Internet on Tech: ‘It Should Just Work’ Posted: 04 Jan 2013 06:27 PM PST While thousands upon thousands of new products and technologies will be shown off at CES 2013, getting underway just a few days from now, one thing is clear: Without the work of Vint Cerf, we wouldn't be where we are today. Cerf and his colleague Robert Kahn developed TCP/IP, or the computer communication protocol that shaped the Internet's architecture. Cerf, who is often called one of "the fathers of the Internet," today works as Google's Chief Internet Evangelist. He's also delivering the keynote address at the Silver Summit conference taking place at the International CES 2013 on Tuesday. We had a Google Hangout with Cerf, where he talked about the 30th anniversary of the Int… |
Art Organizations Say Social Media Plays a Major Role in Operations Posted: 04 Jan 2013 06:11 PM PST Nearly 1,300 art organizations said the Internet has played a major role in today's art world -- from expanding audiences, finding new artists and art appreciators, and even broadening the definition of art itself. The study was conducted by Pew Research Center's Internet & American Life Project. The organizations surveyed have all received funds from the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) in recent years. Seventy-seven percent of respondents agreed with the statement that the Internet has "played a major role in broadening the boundaries of what it considered art." People Meet Their Fatter Selves for Weight Loss Campaign Posted: 04 Jan 2013 05:40 PM PST Just when you think the weight-loss industry has run out of ideas, here's an inspired ad campaign from Medifast that features people interviewing their fatter selves through the magic of video. The ads use video shot in January 2012 and later on in the year when the participants had reached their weight-loss goals. For instance, the video above features Kimberley Vandlen, who lost more than 30 lbs. Vandlen has a tearful conversation with herself before and after that's both poignant and kind of weirdly reminiscent of Jeremiah McDonald, the guy who interviewed his 12-year-old self this summer. As the making-of video below demonstrates, Vandlen's weight loss didn't happen overnight… More About: Advertising |

5 Predictions for Mobile Tech in 2013 Posted: 04 Jan 2013 04:27 PM PST If denial isn't just a river in Egypt, then mobile isn't just a city in Alabama. And if 2012 proved one thing, it's that there's no denying mobile is the present and future of technology. Sales figures for mobile devices reached new heights in 2012. Market research firm Gartner predicted tablet sales would near 120 million, about doubling the total sold in 2011. In addition, the number of active smartphones eclipsed 1 billion during the past year. That's one for every seven people on the planet. And while it took almost two decades to reach 1 billion active smartphones, research firm Strategy Analytics projects there will be 2 billion by 2015, fueled by growth in developing economies… More About: features, Mobile, Predictions 2013, smartphone, tablets, Tech |

This is Why You Can’t Access Google Maps on Windows Phone Posted: 04 Jan 2013 03:20 PM PST Todays' Internet lesson is simple: rendering engines matter. If you're a Windows Phone 8 user, chances are you are unable to access Google Maps in Internet Explorer. Attempting to access Google Maps from a Windows Phone device redirects the user to Google's main homepage. Earlier this afternoon, this behavior was noted by forum users on The Verge. We were able to confirm the behavior on our own Windows Phone devices and on a desktop web browser with a modified user-agent string. Sure enough, attempts to access maps.google.com or google.com/maps led to a redirect to the main Google homepage. Was this the latest move in a growing mobile feud between Microsoft and Google? It was curio… More About: Google, Google Maps, microsoft, webkit, windows phone, Windows Phone 8 |

Posted: 04 Jan 2013 01:40 PM PST Founding Hulu CEO Jason Kilar and CTO Rich Tom have decided to leave the video-streaming company by the end of the first quarter. In an e-mail to staffers, which was later reposted to Hulu's corporate blog, Kilar said he is coordinating with Hulu's board of directors "to ensure there is ample runway to manage this transition" and that his decision "has been one of the toughest [he's] ever made." Reports that Kilar planned to leave Hulu have been circulating for some time. An internal company memo obtained by Variety over the summer cited a plan to transition to a new CEO. At the time, the trade magazine speculated that Kilar was planning to leave as early as September 2012, the mont… More About: hulu, Jason Kilar, rich tom |

That's the idea behind the inner-workings of Square, and one that is contributing to the mobile-payment company's success. "Whether it's your first day, or third year at the company, you're given the same amount of information and opportunity to contribute," Kyle Zink, director of experience at Square, told Mashable. "We want you to be as valuable and effective as you want to be, as soon as you're ready." Zink, who came to Square from a career at Google says that, while Google was transparent with its employees, he was shocked at the level of transparency at Square.
