Syrian Hackers Hijack CBS Twitter Accounts Posted: 23 Apr 2013 02:09 AM PDT The branded Twitter accounts for the CBS television network news shows 60 Minutes and 48 Hours, as well as the Twitter account of at least one CBS affiliate TV station, were hijacked over the weekend by pro-Syrian government hackers. The accounts were used to send bogus messages that claimed that the United States government was aiding terrorists in Syria. "Exclusive: Terror is striking the #USA and #Obama is Shamelessly in Bed with Al-Qaeda," the hijackers tweeted from the @60Minutes account. "New Evidence of CIA Arming Al Qaeda Terrorists in #Syria," read a bogus tweet from @CBSDenver, the Twitter account of KCNC-TV. Read more... More about Twitter, Cbs, Hackers, Syria, and Business |
Order Pizza on Your Xbox 360 With the New Pizza Hut App Posted: 23 Apr 2013 01:04 AM PDT Pizza Hut is launching an app for Xbox Live, letting users order a pizza through their Xbox 360 Once you've linked your Xbox Live account with a Pizza Hut account, and chosen the nearest pizza parlor, orders can be made using the game controller, voice input or Kinect gestures. And for those looking to combine ingredients for that perfect pizza, custom orders are also available This, of course, is not the only way to digitally create an order your pizza online — Domino's iPad app comes to mind — but given the historical link between gaming and pizza, it might be the most natural "If you look at our audience, they love pizza. I mean, who doesn't? It has international appeal, and Pizza Hut is a recognized brand that matches up well with the Xbox brand," Xbox's Larry Hryb told Polygon Read more... Google's Eric Schmidt Says Glass for Consumers 'a Year-ish Away' Posted: 23 Apr 2013 12:03 AM PDT For those itching to get their hands on Google Glass, executive chairman Eric Schmidt has good news: The high-tech specs will likely go on sale for consumers in a year. In an interview with BBC Radio 4's World at One on Monday, Schmidt said, "It would be fair to say that there'll be thousands of these in use by developers over the next months. And then based on their feedback, we'll make some product changes, and it's probably a year-ish away."
For the uninitiated, Glass is a $1,500 pair of augmented-reality glasses that includes a heads-up display, works through voice command and can take picturesExplorer editions of Glass began rolling out to early adopters — many of whom are developers — last week. BBQ 'Supercharger' Says it Starts Grill in Under 10 Minutes Posted: 22 Apr 2013 10:54 PM PDT With the weather getting warmer, many folks are firing up the grill for meaty barbecued goodness But according to one company, there's a downside to BBQs — long wait times. A quick scan of the interwebs shows that those who prefer charcoal generally have to wait anywhere from 30 to 45 minutes for the grill to reach appropriate cooking temperature, after it's lit. A "fire-starting tool" called BBQ Dragon, on the other hand, claims to reduce the start time of charcoal grills to less than 10 minutes, according to its Kickstarter page. The device, which works by "blowing large amounts of low-velocity, cool air" at fires, is also battery-powered, hands-free and micro-USB rechargeable. Check out the video, above, to see it in action. Bud Light Surprises NBA Player with 1,100 Cases of Beer Posted: 22 Apr 2013 10:01 PM PDT During the Miami Heat's incredible 27-game winning streak earlier this season, forward Shane Battier told NBA.com that he's a superstitious fellow. As the Heat won game after game, Battier said he was sticking to one beer to keep the streak's mojo intact. That beer? Bud Light
Now, nearly a month later, Bud Light has paid Battier back for the love. How? A surprise delivery of some 1,100 cases of the goes-down-easy brew. The special drop-off is documented in the YouTube video, above, which we recommend checking out. Whether you're a fan of mass-produced light beer or are a craft-brew snob, there's one thing we can all agree on: Having 1,100 cases of beer laying around is never a bad thing Read more... Soccer Star Bites Opponent, Gets Twitter Follow From Mike Tyson Posted: 22 Apr 2013 07:56 PM PDT Only on Twitter, folks. Seriously, you can't make this stuff up Luis Suarez, our antagonistic protagonist here, is something of a bad boy in the soccer world — that is, not necessarily known for his sportsmanship or sense of fair play. Suarez's latest misstep? Biting an opponent during his Liverpool squad's 2-2 draw with Chelsea over the weekend The bite, of course, drew all sorts of criticism and outrage. But it also gained Suarez a very famous new Twitter follower: ex-boxer Mike Tyson, a notorious biter in his own right Tyson famously took a chunk out of Evander Holyfield's ear during a 1997 fight (then last year tweeted a reference to the carnage while pimping Holyfield's barbecue sauce) Read more... Engineers Call for 'Repairable' Cellphones to Save Money, Environment Posted: 22 Apr 2013 05:57 PM PDT Reduce, reuse and recycle is the foundation of sustainable living. However, it's time to add another "R" to the list — repair. Repairing electronic devices is equally as important as the other three green watchwords, the IEEE, a professional association for engineers, said in a statement. But most manufacturers must first make their devices more "repairable," the statement said. In 2013, more than 1.7 billion mobile phones will be shipped to retailers. Each phone uses 165 pounds of raw materials in its manufacture and more than eight gallons of water in the making of its microchip. Extending a phone's life to four years through "modest design changes," could reduce the device's environmental impact by about 40%, IEEE said. Read more... Smart Prescription Drug Bottle Polices Painkiller Usage to Curb Abuse Posted: 22 Apr 2013 05:49 PM PDT Sometimes, too much of a substance that's supposed to help can cause serious harm. Drug overdose death rates in the United States have more than tripled since 1990, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Just in 2008, for example, the CDC says there were 14,800 deaths in the U.S. caused by prescription painkillers. Considering this problem, a group of Brigham Young University (BYU) students reimagined the prescription drug bottle and have developed a high-tech regulator. Their invention, called Med Vault, basically lets a pharmacist give instructions to the bottle, which then dispenses painkillers accordingly to the patient. Via a USB connection, a pharmacist can use special software to load the pills and program how many can be dispensed per day. Read more... 14-Year-Old Hoops Phenom's Viral Highlights Are Ridiculous Posted: 22 Apr 2013 05:28 PM PDT Meet Seventh Woods. He's got an awesome name and is a high school hoops prodigy who dominates on the basketball court. Oh yeah, and one more thing: he is, apparently, just 14 years old No 14-year-old should be capable of doing the things young Seventh does in the video above. He soars above the rim to swat shots, shows little regard for human life in dunking on opponents' heads and, perhaps most impressively, shows the polished game and advanced skill of someone who's at least 17
Seventh's jaw-dropping highlight reel comes by way of Hoopmixtape, which uploaded this video last Thursday afternoon. Four days later, it's got more than 3 million views on YouTube. Reddit Apologizes for Boston Marathon 'Witch Hunt' Posted: 22 Apr 2013 04:54 PM PDT Last Thursday night, as police in the Boston area engaged in a deadly shootout with two suspects in the Boston Marathon bombings, much of the social web was sure that Reddit users had successfully identified one of the two fugitives Sunil Tripathi had gone missing from Brown University about a month prior. He bore a passing resemblance to grainy footage the FBI had released of its "Suspect #2." When a rumor spread that his name had passed over a police scanner from the shootout scene, Reddit's miraculous moment seemed all but assured. Tripathi's name became a worldwide Twitter trend as thousands upon thousands of reporters, digital onlookers and self-appointed media pundits speculated on his motive and lauded the power of the Reddit crowd Read more... Rookie News Anchor Fired After Viral Gaffe Posted: 22 Apr 2013 02:54 PM PDT The Internet giveth, and the Internet taketh away One day after a viral gaffe brought rookie news anchor A.J. Clemente some short-lived fame on Twitter, the good-natured — but apparently mistake prone — reporter said he's been fired by his local station Sunday night was apparently Clemente's very first stint anchoring for a local news station in Bismarck, N.D. It did not go well First, he muttered the dual-obscenity "F-S bomb" under his breath just as he appeared on camera, seemingly not realizing that he and his co-anchor were, in fact, on air. Then he had about the most awkward self introduction imaginable, struggling to string together a series of words that resembled the English language but didn't really make any sense. A Very Dramatic Reading of a Very Insane Sorority Email Posted: 22 Apr 2013 02:18 PM PDT Warning: The above video is NSFW Last week, the women of the University of Maryland chapter of the Delta Gamma sorority got told; told bad. The letter instantly went viral for being so damn dramatic (with an unbelievably strong emphasis on how sorority girls should really not be this boring). Wearable Computing Pioneer: How Google Glass Makes Life Better Posted: 22 Apr 2013 12:16 PM PDT Long before it was a gleam in Sergey Brin's eye, Thad Starner was sporting a bulky, comparatively prehistoric version of what would ultimately become Google Glass. Starner introduced wearable computing to MIT in 1993; he now has two decades of experience in computer-aided perception. His accoutrements got the attention of Brin and Google co-founder Larry Page back in 1998, who later made him the technical lead manager on Glass Now that Google Glass is poised to become a mainstream product, Starner (second from right, above, in a photo from 1996) reflected on some of the benefits and limitations of wearable computing. Posted: 22 Apr 2013 11:59 AM PDT Remember back in October when NASA discovered the Earth was "singing" to us? Or to put it more prosaically: radio waves emanating from the Van Allen belts that circle the planet were sampled at a CD-like bit rate by orbital probes. The result of all those dangerous loose electrons whizzing around up there was called "Chorus," and it turned out to sound like whale song mixed with crickets Well, it was only a matter of time before that soothing noise was accompanied by the two things humans tend to do with music: a remix and some interpretive dance. The music came courtesy of Kerry Muzzey, a writer of TV and movie themes (including one from Glee); the dance is by DS2DIO (pronounced D-studio), a popular YouTube lifestyle channel with nearly 10 million total views. Report: 8 Million iPhones Returned Due to Problems Posted: 22 Apr 2013 11:36 AM PDT Apple returned up to 8 million iPhones to Foxconn “due to appearance of substandard or dysfunctional problems.” This could cost Cupertino’s top manufacturer up to $1.6 billion, according to a report from China Business The report doesn’t mention specific problems with the handsets. Additionally, we don’t know which models were returned If the batch was made up of existing models, such as the iPhone 5 and iPhone 4S, this could eventually show up as a hole in Apple’s supply chain. However, if these defective models were in fact “iPhone 5S” models, Apple may be forced to delay the launch of its newest handset. Read more... Syrian Hackers Hijack World Cup Twitter Account Posted: 22 Apr 2013 11:08 AM PDT The official Twitter accounts of the World Cup and FIFA's President Joseph Blatter have been hacked, apparently by Syrian hackers.
