FoodSmart App Guides Consumers to Make Healthy, Delicious Choices

Posted: 15 Oct 2012 05:01 AM PDT

Pick up any health magazine, and you'll likely come across a guide to "great tasting, low-calorie foods."

Now, there's something similar in app form. Called "FoodSmart," the free iOS and Android app taps a "scientific-based social network" to help consumers make healthy and delicious choices.

Michael Segal, co-founder of FoodSmart developer wHealthy Solutions, tells Mashable that it combines the communal wisdom of food ratings -- similar to Yelp -- with nutritional advice to help consumers make better decisions while they're grocery shopping or about to eat something at home.

When users scan the barcode on a food item, they're taken to a screen that provides a summary of…

Acer’s Touch-Friendly Windows 8 PCs Also Come as Monitors [HANDS ON]

Posted: 15 Oct 2012 05:01 AM PDT

Acer Aspire 7600U

Acer's new all-in-one PCs have a beautiful design that's very slim and features both a transparent base and a minimalist stand that lets the PC lay almost flat. The 27- and 23-inch designs are also available as touchscreen monitors that are ready for Windows 8.

Click here to view this gallery.

If you're thinking about Windows 8, you should also be thinking about a PC with a touch screen, and Acer is serving up a couple. The company's two new all-in-one PCs support 10-finger capacitive multi-touch -- the key ingredient for the ever-so-touchable Windows 8 interface.

The Acer Aspire 7600U and 5600U have 27- and 23-inch screens, respectively. While the larger model is touch screen only, you can opt for a regular, non-touch model in the smaller size. No compromises on resolution, though -- both size screens are full HD (1,920 x 1,080) panels.

The first thing you notice about the two new machines is their beautifully slim design (just 1.4 inches deep). It features a transparent ba…

Now, you can design a card at PaperlessPost.com and opt to send it electronically, have it printed, or both. Only a small selection of designs are being made available to start, costing between $1 and $2.50 per piece, depending on the weight of the paper and other specified embellishments, like envelope liners. Electronic cards cost around $0.10 each.

Where Apple Maps App Shines: Offline

Posted: 15 Oct 2012 03:47 AM PDT

Mashable OP-ED: This post reflects the opinions of the author and not necessarily those of Mashable as a publication.

Out there beyond the towns and cities, beyond the reach of 3G and Wifi, are the places where map apps on your smartphone are most needed. It's also where most of them run into problems.

Try calling up a Google or Nokia map when you're outside digital civilization, and you'll find little if any information has been preserved. Google Maps for Android lets you select a 50-mile square to download for offline viewing, but woe betide you if you stray outside that 50 miles -- you'll be greeted with an unusable blur.

So what if you're the adventurous type who wants to venture into the undownloadable, service-free yonder? Then you'll want to call on a quiet and unlikely champion: Appl

Google’s Biggest Doodle So Far Remembers Winsor McCay’s ‘Little Nemo’

Posted: 15 Oct 2012 03:04 AM PDT

google

Today's interactive Google Doodle commemorates Little Nemo, the main character in the comics strips of Winsor McCay, published in the New York Herald and the New York American from 1905 to 1914.

The strip debuted on October 15, 1905 -- exactly 107 years ago.

While not a big success in its time, the strip was later adapted for the theater and influenced many artists, including comic book writer Alan Moore and children's book author Maurice Sendak.

The Doodle itself is animated and interactive, gradually expanding into the biggest Doodle we've seen.

It's handy to have a mobile keyboard for your tablet, but wouldn't it be great if your phone could share the love? With Logitech's K810, it can -- the Bluetooth keyboard can pair with up to three devices simultaneously, letting your smartphone, tablet and computer all share in its chiclet-style keys and brushed aluminum finish.

Switching between devices is as easy as a keystroke -- just tap one of the first three function keys to relay the connection. The keys are tailored for Windows 8 machines, but don't be fooled: The keyboard is compatible with PCs, Macs, iPhones, iPads and even Android devices (version 3.0 "Honeycomb" or later).

Final Numbers Are In: Space Jump Breaks YouTube Record

Posted: 14 Oct 2012 10:47 PM PDT

It's official: Felix Baumgartner's jump from the edge of space broke a record for the "live stream with the most concurrent views ever on YouTube," according to the video-sharing website.

At peak, there were more than 8 million concurrent live streams, YouTube said in a Sunday blog post. The jump was broadcast on Red Bull's YouTube channel.

Baumgartner, an Austrian diver, had already set an online record before his jump when more than 7.1 million people tuned in to watch him on YouTube at once; that number continued to climb to a high of 8 million.

The daredevil also broke some non-digital records, including the highest jump from a platform (128,100 feet), the longest distance f…

NASA’s ‘Iron Man’ Exoskeleton Suit Helps Astronauts, Paraplegics [VIDEO]

Posted: 14 Oct 2012 07:59 PM PDT

Watch out, Iron Man.

While it may not have the superpowers of Tony Stark's armor, NASA has built a robot exoskeleton called "X1″ that helps astronauts exercise in space, and paraplegics walk on earth, according to the space agency.

Humans wear the 57-pound device over their body to "assist or inhibit movement in leg joints," NASA said in a release. In the inhibit mode, X1 would be used as an exercise machine to provide resistance against leg movement in space's zero-gravity environment; while, the very same technology could be used in reverse on earth, by helping some people walk.

"NASA is examining the potential for X1 as an exercise dev…

How to Impress Potential Employers in a Video Interview

Posted: 14 Oct 2012 06:57 PM PDT

For many, the video job interview is an intimidating proposition -- and for good reason. You're familiar with chatting with friends or a significant other online, and bringing your professional game to the office, but when you're ask to blend the two, it can be disorienting. Many people opt to dress as if they're going to the office (at least from the waist up), and others wear makeup as if they're on camera to be sure their souped-up appearance translates through to the viewer.

The prepping applies to your space, too -- turn off any devices that might beep (and warn family members or roommates who might wander in). Finally, make eye contact the best way you can on a video call by loo…

5 Games You Should Play This Week

Posted: 14 Oct 2012 04:26 PM PDT

Dishonored

If you are looking for a game that adapts to whatever play style you throw at it, Dishonored is for you. This stealth-action game is set in the fictional world of Dunwall, which has a little bit of a steampunk feel. You play Corvo, a bodyguard framed for murder of the Empress who must win his honor back... by killing everyone. Dishonored is a stealth game, but it reacts a lot to the choices players make. You can choose to kill your assassination targets with physical attacks, magic, by possessing a swarm of rats or through other non-violent means. These choices affect your game's progression and yield different results. One of the creative minds behind Dishonored is Harvey Smith, who also helped make one notable classic game, Deus Ex. Dishonored is available now for PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.

Why You Should Keep Facebook and Your Job Search Separate

Posted: 14 Oct 2012 07:12 AM PDT

Can Facebook help or hurt your job search?

Most employers are looking you up online -- and most job seekers are aware of this. According to a CareerBuilder survey, 37% of employers are looking up candidates' Facebook profiles, and while they may not intend to look at your profiles for reasons not to hire you, they could find them. Most look to see if the candidate is a good fit for the company, whether or not they conduct themselves professionally, and how well rounded they truly are. However, 12% say they look up candidates' Facebook profiles in order to find reasons to not hire them.

This is interesting considering Facebook is sometimes rumored to be launching a job search pl
