Boric Acid-For Him

Breathe it in, ladies. That's the smell of confidence -- the smell of someone who's not afraid to breeze past traditional aromas like cocoa, lavender or "ocean breeze" (whatever that is) and venture instead into the fragrance realm of the not-so-frequently-sniffed.

If you're about to make someone's year, why not scare them a little bit first to add to the drama?

The head coach of the University of Massachusetts Minutemen, Charley Molnar, awarded two of his student athletes with scholarships for their efforts both on and off the field.

To do it, he brought in some well-armed help -- two police officers. The students thought they were being arrested, not being given thousands of dollars towards their education.

Teenagers, E-reader Owners Still Visit Libraries

Posted: 22 Oct 2012 09:02 PM PDT

kindle paperwhite If you have an e-reader, chances are it's helped you plow through the pages of book after book -- and even with all that content, you probably still visit the library.

According to a study by the Pew Research Center published Tuesday, 16-29 year olds are reading more often, largely because of the mass amounts of e-content that is available to them on mobile devices. They're not just reading short blips of content, either -- people under 30 are reading more long-form content on their smartphones and tablets, but also continuing to visit their local libraries.

Eight in 10 Americans ages 16-29 read a book this past year, and more than six out of 10 used their local public library. Of t…

LG Scares the Crap Out of People in an Elevator to Show Off Its Monitors [VIDEO]

Posted: 22 Oct 2012 08:35 PM PDT

Just in time for Halloween, LG has introduced this video of people getting a big scare thanks to the company's high-res monitors.

To show off just how life-like the picture on its monitors can be, the company re-fitted the bottom of an elevator with the screens. The brand then recorded people's reactions as the monitors -- screens pointed up -- displayed what looked like the bottom of the elevator floor dropping out. True, you could probably do that with a lot of monitors, but LG thought of it first.

Luckily for the brand, no one had a heart attack during filming. Of course, it's also possible that these people are actually actors, too. If not, some of these guys deserve a Carlsberg

Top Hat Monocle Transforms Tech From Classroom Distraction into Teaching Tool

Posted: 22 Oct 2012 08:01 PM PDT

Name: Top Hat Monocle

Quick Pitch: Transform tablets and smartphones from classroom distractions into teaching tools.

Genius Idea: Top Hat Monocle lets college students use smartphones, tablets and laptops instead of traditional classroom response systems to engage with their professor's lectures.

If Top Hat Monocle has its way, teachers won't yell at students for taking out their cellphones in class -- they'll encourage it.

The Toronto-based startup is rethinking the way students engage with teachers during college lectures by replacing so-called "clickers" -- the remote-control response systems used in classrooms -- with web-based applications that work on students' sma…

Obama’s ‘Horses and Bayonets’ Zinger Sinks Twitter Battleship

Horses and bayonets. Yes, you heard that correctly during Monday's night third and final presidential debate between Barack Obama and Mitt Romney. And, no, you didn't fall into a time machine and end up in the year 1900. When squabbling about the size of the U.S. military force, the president delivered a one liner that sent Twitter into a wisecracking frenzy.

The exchange went a little something like this:

"You mention the Navy, for example, and the fact that we have fewer ships than we did in 1916. Well governor, we also have fewer horses and bayonets," Obama said. "We have these things called aircraft carriers and planes land on them. We have ships that go underwater, nuclear su…

Apple’s Big Launch Event: What to Expect

Posted: 22 Oct 2012 05:31 PM PDT

When Apple announced last week it would be holding its latest launch event at the California Theatre in downtown San Jose (pictured above) this Tuesday, there was a fair amount of head-scratching in the blogosphere.

Why there? Why choose an obscure old-timey theatre for what is likely to be the company's first new product line in years, the iPad Mini?

In recent years, the company has opted to launch gadgets at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco (as it did for the iPhone 5 and new iPad events earlier this year). When it wanted a more intimate venue, as for the iPhone 4S launch last October, the company invited journalists to the Apple campus at 1 Infinite Loop it…

Music Monday: Our Favorite “Mini” Songs

Puppy wearing headphones

Sometimes, less is more.

In the tech world, smaller is almost always better. In two decades we've gone from massive desktop computers to ultra-thin laptops and tablets. We keep on demanding "less" from our gadgets, and yet we haven't changed our preferred song length in a century. An unwritten law dictates that the optimal duration of a song is between three and five minutes. This has its roots in the technology that limited the length of tracks recorded in the 1920s. Of course, technology has advanced quite a bit since the early 20th century, so why does a four-minute single remain the industry standard?

It turns out that this is the perfect song length for advertisers, who can…

Marissa Mayer outlined her plans for Yahoo's future in her first earnings call as CEO of the beleaguered digital media enterprise. The company's third-quarter earnings were better than expected: Earnings-per-share were 35 cents on revenue of $1.09 billion, compared to analysts' estimates of 26 cents per share on revenue of $1.08 billion.

Unzipping the Mystery: How ZIP Files Work

Posted: 22 Oct 2012 03:21 PM PDT

Unzip Universe

If you've ever had to email, upload or download several large files or programs, you've most likely encountered ZIP files. Also known as compressed or archived files, ZIP files condense multiple files into a single location with the extension .zip or .ZIP, reducing the overall size and making them easier to transmit.

Phillip Katz invented the ZIP file in 1986, and it was first implemented with the PKZip program for Katz's company, PKWare, Inc. Eventually, Katz's compression method became common usage within popular operating systems. Microsoft Windows and Apple's Mac OS include built-in utilities to compress and unzip files, and programs like WinRAR, WinZip and StuffIt can expand them…
