Goats Yelling Like Humans Will Delight Your Ears

All those childhood tales of goats saying "Baaaaaaa" were just plain incorrect. The noise goats make more similarly resembles the drunk guy squawking outside your window at 4 a.m.

And, boy, are these farm animals the chatty type, as witnessed in this supercut of goats just going off.

In case you can't get enough, just for giggles, here's a video from 2008 that showcases a goat that sounds like Usher (yes, the singer):

Touchscreen T-Shirts Only a Few Years Away

Posted: 15 Feb 2013 06:02 PM PST

Most people have to keep their smart phones within reach. But what if instead of having your technology an arm's length away, it was actually on your arm? Imagine clothing with touchscreen capabilities built right into the fabric -- a truly "wearable" technology.

Under Armour is working on it as we speak, but the technology isn't quite there... yet.

Earlier this week, Under Armour officially unveiled Armour39, its next generation of wearable technology. Armour39 is an athletic performance monitoring system that measures "what matters most: WILLpower." WILLpower is Under Armour's proprietary measurement for how hard an athlete pushes him or herself during a workout on a scale of…

Not only are we inseparable from our devices, we can make ourselves sound like machines, too. If you're a fan of autotune, there's an app for that, or, a WeeWow.

WeeWow turns your iPhone into a talk box with an adapter and tubing. The device routes your speaker's sound through the tube and lets you use your lips and teeth to shape the tone.

Talking like a robot has never been easier. Check out the video above to see how it works.

Ridiculo.us, WeeWow's creators, explains the device takes advantage of the iPhone's sound-making capabilities. You can use any sound app, from synthesizers to guitars.

How Social Media Is Making Over the Fashion Industry

Posted: 15 Feb 2013 04:13 PM PST

Technology made its mark at New York Fashion Week this year with the rise of social media on the runway.

One study from eBay Deals looked into data from five social networks during NYFW and found more people are using social media for wardrobe advice, inspiration and the latest trends. Top fashion accounts live tweeted from the shows and two brands, Badgley Mischka and Bergdorf Goodman, co-previewed their collections exclusively on Pinterest. Fashion-related tweets doubled from last year's events and profressional photographers made use of Instagram.

As the New York shows comes to a close, social media will be a major factor at London Fashion Week starting Friday. Fashionistas can ke

R.I.P. Posterous

Posterous, the blogging platform acquired by Twitter early last year, announced Friday that it will be shutting down its services in April.

"On April 30th, we will turn off posterous.com and our mobile apps in order to focus 100% of our efforts on Twitter," Posterous founder and CEO Sachin Agarwal wrote in a blog post. "This means that as of April 30, Posterous Spaces will no longer be available either to view or to edit."

Posterous launched in 2008 to simplify the blogging process and Twitter acquired it three years later, snatching up the startup's talented team of employees in the process. In the year since it was acquired, Posterous has continued to roll out some new features,…

3D-Printed House Can Be Assembled in Just One Day

Posted: 15 Feb 2013 02:52 PM PST

Just last month, Dutch architects unveiled plans to build the world's first 3D-printed house out of sand, with a construction time of 18 months. Now British architecture collective Softkill Design has announced that it too is planning to build a 3D-printed house, but it can be printed in three weeks and built in one day.

Rather than sand, the structure, known as the ProtoHouse, will be built out of highly fibrous laser-sinted bioplastic. The company does not see it as a race, they don't even see the Dutch as competition. A member of Softkill Design, Gilles Retsin told Dezeen:

We actually don't even consider that a 3D-printed building because he is 3D-printing formwork and then po…

3 Companies You Hate But Investors Love

There's a disconnect between companies that are popular with consumers and companies that are popular with investors.

This infographic sets out to show you a microcosm of that phenomenon, picking out three companies that are loathed by many but the favorite of many investors, and three companies that are loved by consumers but might cause investors to be more wary.

Internet Activists Deliver 300,000 Anti-CISPA Signatures to Congress

Posted: 15 Feb 2013 02:03 PM PST

An army of Internet freedom activists immediately leapt into action after the controversial Cyber Intelligence Sharing and Protection Act, or CISPA, was recently reintroduced to Congress. Among them have been Demand Progress and Fight for the Future, who this week helped 300,000 citizens send a petition against CISPA to the lawmakers behind it.

Those 300,000 online signatures were e-mailed to the House Intelligence Committee, which is currently debating the reintroduced CISPA. A dedicated Twitter account, @CISPApetition, has been tweeting a set of signatures every hour to the chairman and ranking member of that committee -- who together authored the bill -- with the hashtag #NoCISPA:

Malware-Serving LA Times Page Went Unnoticed for 6 Weeks

Posted: 15 Feb 2013 01:24 PM PST

Malicious code lived on the website of the Los Angeles Times for six weeks, clandestinely redirecting visitors to another site booby-trapped with the Blackhole exploit kit.

The problem first came to the attention of security blogger Brian Krebs, who on Feb. 7 followed up on tips from readers by reaching out to his Twitter followers.

Jindrich Kubec, director of threat intelligence at Czech security firm Avast, confirmed the problem in a tweet shortly thereafter and said the malicious code had been in place since Dec. 23.

L.A. Times spokeswoman Hillary Manning originally told Krebs the problem was caused not by the newspaper, but by a widespread bug in an ad network that had affected…

Georgia Politician Wants to Ban Lewd Photoshopping

Posted: 15 Feb 2013 01:07 PM PST

What's wrong with a little Photoshop pranking? Plenty, if you ask Georgia State Rep. Earnest Smith.

Smith is calling for such mock-ups to be made illegal in his state and punishable by a $1,000 fine, after being embarrassed by a blogger who photoshopped the politician's head on a nude male porn star's body. The bill was first introduced by a different politician last year, after a teenage girl was the victim of a similar act, but it failed to reach a vote.

"It's clear that we need to do something," Smith told Savannah Now.

The image in question (NSFW-ish) was whipped up by Andre Walker, who runs local politics blog Georgia Unfiltered. What does Walker have to say about the o…

Neighborhood Watch Moves Online With Social Site Nextdoor

Posted: 15 Feb 2013 01:05 PM PST

Nextdoor, the social networking site for neighborhoods that launched in 2012, is becoming the digital version of the neighborhood watch.

With Nextdoor, communities can share vital information about crime, lost pets, home repairmen and general neighborhood happenings. However 20% of Nextdoor posts deal with crime and safety. So with the recent $21.6 million in funding, plus the launch of Nextdoor 2.0, the site will focus more on helping neighbors connect when it comes to preventing and reporting local crime.

"According to a recent survey, nearly 30% of people say they know none of their neighbors by name," Nextdoor co-founder and CEO, Nirav Tolia, tells Mashable. "Yet when it comes to…

"It blows me away to think about how popular and strong a platform (YouTube) has become for us," Terry Fitzpatrick, executive vice president of content and distribution for Sesame Workshop, told the Associated Press.

Elon Musk vs. The Times: Why This Can’t End Well for Tesla

Posted: 15 Feb 2013 12:43 PM PST

Mashable OP-ED

"Never pick a fight with someone who buys ink by the barrel." That line, often misattributed to Mark Twain, used to mean something in the glory days of newspapers. Ink was a scarce commodity, as were presses and trucks; you couldn't very well print or distribute as many copies of your version of the facts as the New York Times could.

Electrons, however, are the opposite of scarce. In the era of social media, you have just as many potential listeners for your argument as those ink-slinging hacks, especially if you're futuristic entrepreneur extraordinaire. And so it was that Elon Musk, normally a very cautious interviewee, decided to fire indiscriminately at the New York

Bionic Eye Implant Approved for U.S. Patients

The company that makes the device, Second Sight, based in Sylmar, Calif., can now market the retinal prosthetic to patients with advanced retinitis pigmentosa, a degenerative eye disease that can cause blindness. This is the first approved treatment for the disease in the United States.

NJ Transit Authority Should Bring Us E-Tickets, Not More Paper

Posted: 15 Feb 2013 12:05 PM PST

Mashable OP-ED

To expand its fare payment technology, New Jersey Transit will now give you paper dollar bills in some of those vending machines that sell paper tickets. Yes, they're finally moving away from using $1 coins (which no one wants as a form of change anyway). But here's a thought: Why not bypass the change and the paper tickets altogether and move to e-tickets?

I take NJ Transit trains to commute into New York City every day. If you follow me on Twitter, you've likely read my grumblings about how insane it is for conductors to make their way through cars -- filled with people standing shoulder to shoulder -- taking and punching holes in paper tickets.

Last week I needed…

The Social Psychology of the Selfie

Posted: 15 Feb 2013 11:55 AM PST

The "selfie." I kind of cringe every time I hear that word, imagining Myspace-style angles, duck faces, peace signs and dirty mirrors. I'm not alone either. Many are hesitant to take and share photos of themselves, for fear of looking vain, vulnerable or being scrutinized.

But still, photo sharing sites like Facebook, Instagram and Tumblr are filled with self-portraits. Some upload entire albums to Facebook of their Mac Photo Booth sessions. Others take filtered pictures of what they wore that day, or caption a closeup with mild to severe self-deprecation.

Among the many self-portraits are ones of celebrities, like Justin Bieber or Kim Kardashian. When I asked comedian Chelsea Peretti…
