Six-Year-Old Girl Demolishes Her Older Breakdancing Competition

Posted: 05 Mar 2013 02:23 AM PST

A pint-sized b-girl is making waves online for her mind-blowing breakdancing skills.

Boasting more flow in her tiny pinky than most adults have in their entire bodies, 6-year-old Terra of the London-based Soul Maverick Crew out-flares and out-spins her older male opponent as the crowd goes wild.

With plenty of attitude to spare, Terra soundly defeats the competition. Watch it all go down in the video, above; then, tell us what you think of her performance in the comments.

The Pirate Bay Claims to Move Its Servers to North Korea

Posted: 05 Mar 2013 01:48 AM PST

Controversial file-sharing website The Pirate Bay revealed plans to move its servers to North Korea.

Originally hosted by the Swedish Pirate Party, the website was ejected from Sweden following legal threats from a local anti-piracy group, and has since sought bandwidth from Norway and Spain. The Pirate Bay has attracted much ire for hosting magnet links and torrent files, which can be used for illegal downloading of copyrighted material.

Now, according to a Sunday blog post that numerous reports say is likely satirical, North Korean leader Kim Jong-un has invited the site to "fight our battles from their network."

"This is truly an ironic situation. We have been fighting for a free…

The iPhone Could Have Been Called ‘TriPod’ or ‘Mobi’

Posted: 05 Mar 2013 12:49 AM PST

"I just got a message on my TriPod!" Sounds a little odd, doesn't it? Well, it could've been a reality, as Apple considered the names TriPod, Mobi and TelePod -- among others -- for its iPhone, according to former Apple head of advertising Ken Segall.

Other names that Apple considered calling its iconic phone were TelePod and iPad, 9to5Mac reports.

Segall explains the reasoning behind each name that was considered -- Tripod is a play on the iPhone's triple functionality (iPhone, iPod and internet access), and Mobi is a simple play on the word "mobile". The iPad was another possible choice (remember, there was no iPad tablet back then, and the name was up for grabs), and TelePod simpl…

LG Unveils Quick Cover for Optimus G Pro

Posted: 04 Mar 2013 11:58 PM PST

LG unveiled a special case, called the Quick Cover, for its huge Optimus G Pro smartphone, which debuted last week at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.

The Quick Cover takes inspiration from Apple's Smart Cover: The Optimus G Pro's screen automatically turns on when the cover is lifted, but shuts down when the cover is placed on top.

What's more, the cover doesn't get in the way of the phone's wireless charging or NFC capabilities. It comes in seven different designs, and costs $36 or $40, depending on whether you choose a patterned or solid color version.

The Quick Cover is currently available in South Korea, but there's no word on when it might appear in U.S. stores.

‘Kony 2012′ One Year Later: Success or Failure?

Posted: 04 Mar 2013 10:58 PM PST

One year ago, on March 5, 2012, a 30-minute non-profit-made video brewed an unprecedented level of social media buzz and backlash. Kony 2012, created by three filmmakers from Southern California, demanded the global community capture and try African militant leader Joseph Kony in the International Criminal Court by the end of 2012.

Kony, the leader of the Lord's Resistance Army, was made famous by the record-setting YouTube documentary, as was the film's explicit goal. Although Kony is responsible for enlisting child soldiers, sacking villages and raping women, he was never a household name in the U.S. until the release of Invisible Children's film. The wanted war criminal is, however, s…

Cooking App Picks the Perfect Spices for Your Meal

Posted: 04 Mar 2013 05:19 PM PST

Do you have a cupboard full of spices but no clue what to use them for? Hold the salt and pepper. A cooking app inspired by a Cincinnati grandmother might just help you kick your recipes up a notch.

For years, grandson B.P. Storn, of Cincinnati, Ohio, used an herb wheel his late grandma gave him. The wheel matches the best herbs to season a dish you might be cooking up for breakfast, lunch or dinner -- making for quite the handy cooking companion. For example, if you're preparing chicken, the wheel might recommend using rosemary, oregano, garlic, basil and tarragon.

Now Storn wants to make the wheel mobile, by raising funds on Kickstarter to create a smartphone app.

The cooking app…

What Happened Inside the Investigation of Aaron Swartz

Posted: 04 Mar 2013 03:59 PM PST

Many details about the Aaron Swartz case still remain shrouded in mystery and secrecy. Last week, though, we learned that the prosecutors of his case were targeting him for his open-access activism. New details have now emerged about his life during the months following his arrest for allegedly downloading thousands of scholarly articles from the online database JSTOR.

In a long and at times harrowing essay published in The Atlantic, journalist Quinn Norton recounts what happend to her life with Swartz after his arrest, revealing that the government subpoenaed her for information about the case. Norton, a freelance writer and Wired contributor, was Swartz's partner at the time.

CryFace iPhone App Is Grumpy Cat Approved

Posted: 04 Mar 2013 02:54 PM PST

The CryFace iPhone app is simple in concept -- upload a picture of someone, and the app will alter it to make it look like that person just found out Twinkies died all over again.

Once you have the app downloaded, you can use it offline, as long as you have the desired picture stored somewhere on your phone. It's a pretty short process between uploading the picture and slapping on a rich, weighty stream of tears. Next time the endless stream of excuses come in after (another) defeat in (game you've mastered), you can offer a nice visual response, presented without comment.

You can also add a comment and make the edited picture look like a meme, but that is an extra feature tha…

Netflix Still Has No Plans for BlackBerry 10

Posted: 04 Mar 2013 02:30 PM PST

Netflix isn't coming to BlackBerry 10 any time soon.

The company confirmed to AllThingsD that it has no plans to develop a native or Android-ported version of its mobile phone app for BlackBerry 10 smartphones.

This shouldn't come as much of a surprise. More than a year ago, Netflix confirmed that it would not support BlackBerry devices, including the then newly-updated PlayBook tablet.

At the time, the decision was largely about resources. Investing time in creating an app for a platform with a very small user base -- especially in the U.S. -- just didn't make sense for the streaming video company.

However, because BlackBerry 10 can run Android apps in a special app player -- de…

Free Digital Workshops Help Teens Design Robots and Apps

Teens combined paints and pastels with sensors and triggers Sunday, as they learned the fundamentals of digital design in New York City.

AIGA, the professional association for design, launched a series of free tech and design workshops for teenagers. The first Inspire/Make program in Harlem drew inspiration from the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Participants created drawing machines, Android apps and posters based off a previous field trip to the museum.

The three workshops, "Making a Mobile App," "Be a Graphic Designer" and "Electronics Prototyping with littleBits" catered to high school students, with the latter also open to young children.

Pew: Twitter Not a Reliable Indicator of Public Opinion

Posted: 04 Mar 2013 02:04 PM PST

Seemingly dozens of startups exist which try to make sense of Twitter sentiment, and Twitter itself has been trying hard to portray its sentiment data as an accurate reflection of public opinion. However, Pew Research Center -- among the gold standards of public research polling -- says it might be all for naught.

Pew compared traditional public poll results with Twitter sentiment data around eight of the most significant political events over the last year, often finding significantly divergent results.

According to Pew, in some instances -- Barack Obama's reelection, the first presidential debate and a federal court ruling on California's same-sex marriage ban -- the reaction on Twit…

5 Ways You Pay More for Google Clicks

Posted: 04 Mar 2013 01:54 PM PST

The transition to Google Enhanced Campaigns -- where you'll be bidding for tablet clicks combined with desktop/laptop clicks -- will result in inflationary trends in billed CPCs for many advertisers. However, the advent of Enhanced Campaigns is just one of five reasons you might be paying more for clicks than you could otherwise be paying.

1. Enhanced Campaigns' Influence on CPC Inflation

The strategic decision as to whether or not to accept a blended average conversion rate and/or influence/micro-conversions across the mixed stream of clicks as your basis for bids will often have to do with the elasticity of the marketplace.

For example, let's assume that your CMO has asked you to…

Wickr: Can the Snapchat for Grown-Ups Save You From Spies?

Posted: 04 Mar 2013 01:38 PM PST

In the online world, our digital footprints hardly ever wash away. The Internet never forgets -- and neither does social media.

Web users are coming to terms with ever-increasing storage, both physical and in the cloud. As a result, data retention has become just too easy. Sometimes it's just an embarrassing picture. Other times, in places where there's a war or an uprising, people would like remove their sensitive messages, which could be used against them by oppressive regimes getting better at monitoring digital communications.

That's where Wickr comes in.

The app, which could best be described as a Snapchat for grown-ups, is only available for iOS right now. Launched in June 201…

This Is What Venus Looks Like From Saturn

Posted: 04 Mar 2013 01:21 PM PST

Venus gleams over Saturn's enormous shoulder in two stunning new photos captured by NASA's Cassini spacecraft, which is orbiting the ringed planet.

Earth's hellishly hot "sister planet" peeks through Saturn's iconic rings in one image, which Cassini took last November when it was in Saturn's shadow. Because of the vast gulf between the two worlds, the Earth-size Venus appears as a bright white dot, just above and to the right of the picture's center.

When it took the photo, Cassini was about 498,000 miles from Saturn and looking toward the unlit side of the rings from slightly below the ring plane, researchers said. Each pixel in the image covers about 28 miles.

From Grumpy Cat to Hackathons: Brands Ready SXSW Assault

About 20,000 people attend South by Southwest each year, a group that could just about fit in Madison Square Garden. This is not just any group, however. A good portion of the 20,000 are tastemakers and influencers. In other words, they are the type of people that marketers want to get in front of.

Hence the stampede of brands heading down to Austin this year ranging from Miller Lite to Oreo. Of course, to impress such cutting edge types, you have to go beyond billboard and tchotchkes. The following brands are embracing hacker culture, Internet memes and, when all else fails, providing weary attendees with a way to recharge or catch a free ride:

Five-Year-Old Spends $2500 on Apps in Under 10 Minutes

Posted: 04 Mar 2013 01:15 PM PST

Danny Kitchen just wanted to kill some zombies.

The 5-year-old asked his parents for the password to the family iPad to download a free game, only to accidentally rack up more than $2,500 in add-on purchases on his mother's credit card.

Danny downloaded Zombies vs. Ninjas, a free game, from Apple's App Store. His parents, who gave permission to play to game, left their son with the iPad while they tended to guests in their U.K home. Little did they know, young Danny ordered additional "darts" and "bombs" to battle the zombies, weapons that can cost up to $99.99.

His mother, Sharon, remained unaware of the purchases until she received 19 iTunes emails the following morning. Thinki…
