#HashtagEtiquette: 8 People Who Are Doing It Wrong

A hashtag can be deadly in the wrong hands. Thanks to the rise of social media, particularly Twitter, the pound sign frequently spices up captions, statuses and tweets. Like all good things, hashtags have been swiftly overused and destroyed by social media enthusiasts who don't understand how to properly wield them.

How does Mashable know what's going viral?
Mashable built a system called Velocity, which scours the social web, collecting lots and lots of data around how people are engaging with published articles. It then pulls all of that data back to Mashable, dumps it into our own predictive engine, and predicts which articles are about to go viral.
