The 10 Most Popular Photos on Twitter This Week [PICS] Posted: 07 Jan 2012 02:38 PM PST What was the most popular pic on Twitter this week? We’ve narrowed down 30 million tweets to find the 10 pics that had the greatest impact on Twitter users between the dates of Dec. 30 and Jan. 5. This week, instead of focusing on celebrities, our intrepid experts at real-time photo search engine Skylines decided to narrow down the pics to those associated with the most popular trends of the week based on hashtags. While our results will still feature plenty of celebrity doings, we think this improved method will give you a more realistic view of what’s truly moving Twitter’s sharing numbers the most during the week. We’ll continue to refine our algorithm, aiming to accurately get our fingers on the pulse of Twitter as it releases its torrent of information and pictorial data each week. Let us know in the comments if you think this is a more appropriate way to pick these pics. So here they are, the most popular photos on Twitter this week. And if you still haven’t gotten enough after this cacophonous cavalcade of chaos, take a look at last week’s roundup of top Twitter photos. 1. King Hamad cartoonThe protest in Bahrain has been one of the most popular subjects for photos every week since Skylines launched and is this week's most popular topic again. The most popular photo within the subject of Bahrain is this cartoon of Bahrain's king Hamad by cartoonist Carlos LaTuff, who is actually from Rio de Janeiro. The cartoon says: "Happy new year, king Hamad," but shows the king being punched in the face. Click here to view this gallery. Vizio to Roll Out Full Line of PCs at CES 2012 [PICS] Posted: 07 Jan 2012 12:10 PM PST Vizio, known for its low-cost but good-quality HDTVs, will introduce five new desktop PCs and laptops at CES 2012. Although the official announcement hasn’t been made yet, we obtained pictures of some of the surprisingly complete group of products Vizio will introduce, starting with a 27″ all-in-one PC and ranging down to a 14″ thin-and-light notebook. In between will be a 24″ all-in-one PC, a 15.6″ notebook and a 15.6 ” thin-and-light notebook In an interview with Bloomberg, Vizio’s Chief Technology Officer Matt McRae said the new line of Vizio PCs will selling at prices “substantially less” than similar hardware from Apple. McRae wouldn’t share any other specifics about the products. According to Gizmodo, the new line is expected to be available in June. It looks to us like Vizio is aiming straight for the heart of Apple’s iMac and MacBook business, undercutting it with lower prices and taking advantage of the “Apple tax” that many think makes people pay extra for that Apple logo. Take a look at the gallery of teaser pics below, and let us know what you think of Vizio’s new line of PCs. We’ll have more details as Vizio announces the products on Monday. Update: We stated in an earlier version of this post that Vizio’s Chief Technology Officer Matt McRae said Intel Ivy Ridge processors would be in these new PCs, but he was misquoted. Vizio hasn’t yet announced chip partners. The text has been updated to reflect this. We regret the error. -CW Vizio AIO Back

3 New Tools for Promoting Your Interests Posted: 07 Jan 2012 11:31 AM PST The Spark of Genius Series highlights a unique feature of startups and is made possible by Microsoft BizSpark. If you would like to have your startup considered for inclusion, please see the details here. Each weekend, Mashable selects startups we think are building interesting, unique or niche products. This week we focused on three companies creating new ways to promote your interests. SeeJoeRock is a network for musicians and music industry professionals to connect. StereoPill is a web app that creates music playlists, and Juxtapost is a free online posterboard that lets you share photos of your favorite things. SeeJoeRock: A Musician’s Free CommunityQuick Pitch: SeeJoeRock is a free community for musicians. Genius Idea: Bridges the gap between unsigned musicians and professionals in the music industry. Mashable’s Take: Described at the “eHarmony for musicians,” SeeJoeRock is a network for unsigned musicians and music industry professionals to connect. Unlike most music sites, SeeJoeRock focuses on the “unknown” or “unsigned” musicians, providing a place for them to be seen, heard and discovered. Whether you’re an emerging artist looking for help to produce your first CD, or a professional searching for up-and-coming musicians to perform at a local venue, SeeJoeRock is the network that will help you find the resources you need. Unsigned, independent musicians and bands can create their own profiles and include bios, genre, talents, levels of experience and instruments played. They can also upload MP3s of recorded songs, music videos, photos and links to their websites and social networks. This information lets music professionals such as labels, talents, agents and promoters search for and find the musicians they need by genre, style or location. Likewise, professionals in the music industry can create their own profiles and list their contact information, biography, shows, the services they offer and the type of musicians they target. Each month, SeeJoeRock features a new artist/band and professional on its site. The header is replaced with photos and logos of the band or professional, and their profiles and a music video are displayed on the home page. Launched in 2009, SeeJoeRock targets paid advertisers targeting musicians. The company also offers the option to produce CDs, in collaboration with a partner company, for new artists. SeeJoeRock currently has nearly 5,000 registered users. StereoPill: Web Application That Creates Music PlaylistsQuick Pitch: StereoPill creates event playlists crowdsourced by your audience. Genius Idea: Lets event attendees create a dynamic, detailed music playlist so DJs can host better events. Mashable’s Take: While DJing at hundreds of events including weddings, parties and corporate functions, Ari Rosenfield found a serious disconnect between the music his clients requested him to play and the music guests wanted to listen or dance to. So in 2011, Rosenfield developed the solution to this disconnect — StereoPill. StereoPill is a web application that lets party guests create a playlist by voting for the songs they want to hear. The site then ranks the votes on a live voting page, which can be set to private, and allows guests to comment on and discuss the songs that will be played. The built-in song previews let guests listen to and know specifically which songs they are voting for. StereoPill is designed to give event planners and professional DJ’s insight into their guests’ musical preferences before hosting a live event. Personalized playlists will allow DJ’s to host better events because they gain a better understanding of the genre and style of the music the guests prefer. “As a professional DJ, I still rely on my years of experience and extensive knowledge of music,” says Rosenfield. “But StereoPill has an invaluable tool in connecting with my clients and their guests and getting powerful insight.” Playlists cost $15 after your first event, which is free. Discounts are given to high-volume customers. Juxtapost: All Your Favorite Things, Side by SideQuick Pitch: Juxtapost is a free “social vision board” sharing site. Genius Idea: Organizes photos of all your favorite things, side by side, onto your own postboard. Mashable’s Take: How many times have you searched the web, found something you love, and then lost it? If this happens more than occasionally, Juxtapost will make sure you don’t lose any of your favorite things again. Juxtapost creates a “social vision board” by providing tools for its members to bookmark photos they find while browsing the web. The simple-to-use application connects users with a robust community that is also sharing their discoveries. Using Juxtapost is easy – just sign up instantly via your Facebook account and add the “Juxtapost It!” bookmark to your browser. Then, simply click the bookmark while on any website to save your favorite images to your postboard and share with your friends or on Facebook. Users can organize their collection by color using the automatic color index or export their posted data to an Excel spreadsheet. Although the idea behind Juxtapost is similar to online pinboard Pinterest, Juxtapost claims to be different for several reasons:
Juxtapost was launched in December and is self-funded. Based on the products its members are interested in, Juxtapost recommends a single service to a member for low-percentage referral fees. Image courtesy of Flickr, JPott Series Supported by Microsoft BizSpark The Spark of Genius Series highlights a unique feature of startups and is made possible by Microsoft BizSpark, a startup program that gives you three-year access to the latest Microsoft development tools, as well as connecting you to a nationwide network of investors and incubators. There are no upfront costs, so if your business is privately owned, less than three years old, and generates less than U.S.$1 million in annual revenue, you can sign up today. Exhilarating Film Takes You Through 11 Countries in 1 Minute [VIRAL VIDEO] Posted: 07 Jan 2012 09:29 AM PST Take a look at what director Rick Meriki did last summer: a spectacular one-minute video he made with two of his pals as they traveled to 11 countries over 44 days, walking us through a dazzling variety of cultures, locations and images. “Move” shows actor Andrew Lees strolling toward us in perfect sync, surrounded by a mind-boggling group of scenarios, all whizzing by so quickly you have to watch this quick clip a few times just to absorb it all. The film was part of a three-film series of short subjects commissioned by STA Travel Australia, based on the concepts of movement, learning and food. Of the three, this one is by far the most compelling. The other two, entitled “Learn” and “Eat,” are artfully done as well, and all are beautifully photographed by Director of Photography and Editor Tim White. The ultrahigh production-quality and Kelsey James’s haunting music reminds me of Matt Harding’s groundbreaking “Where the Hell Is Matt?” video from 2008, in which Harding spent 14 months traveling through 42 countries and dancing his little dance that touched the hearts of millions. “Where the Hell Is Matt? ” garnered an astonishing 41 million views on YouTube, and this similar short film “Move” is a kind of compressed, one-man version without all the interpersonal interaction (this one’s 60 seconds long, while Matt’s film was 4 minutes, 29 seconds). Even so, I find “Move” enthralling. And even though it hit the Web late last summer, I think it deserves more recognition than it got then. If you agree, spread the word — share it with your friends. The second short film of the series, “Eat,” will certainly make you hungry: The third, “Learn,” is heartwarming and exhilarating: [via Vimeo] More About: Film, Rick Meriki, trending, Vimeo, viral video For more Dev & Design coverage:

Google Doodle Honors Charles Addams, Creator of “The Addams Family” Posted: 07 Jan 2012 08:26 AM PST Those of you familiar with the ’60s comedy TV series The Addams Family will recognize the eccentric cast of spooky characters Google depicts in today’s Google Doodle, commemorating what would have been the 100th birthday of The Addams Family creator, Charles Addams. The Addams Family television series, which ran from 1964 to 1966, was not much of a hit in its day — never breaking into the top 20 — but has lived on to achieve minor cult status through the decades because of its offbeat humor, bizarre themes, lovable characters and myriad cultural references. Cartoonist and artist Charles Addams was born in New Jersey on January 7, 1912. He brought The Addams Family to fame in 1938 as a cartoon that regularly appeared in The New Yorker before it was made into a TV series. (See an example of Addams’s New Yorker cartoons in the pic at right.) In the cartoons, none of the Addams family characters had names, but for the TV series, we first came to know the characters of Lurch (“you rang?”), Uncle Fester, and Gomez and Morticia Addams. Today, you can see how each of the characters interacts with the letters of the word “Google,” staying in character for today’s Google Doodle. See it at Google’s main search page, and when you click on the artwork, you’ll see search results for Charles Addams. Even if you haven’t seen the TV series, you might have heard its catchy theme song, with the dual finger clicks after each of its macabre musical phrases. Want to take a look at this kooky family with its strange and supernatural powers? Full Addams Family episodes are still available for viewing on YouTube. Bonus: Here are the best Google Doodles of 2011: 1. Martin Luther King Jr.This Google Doodle, displayed Jan. 17, features a group of children playing hopscotch — an homage to Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Click here to view this gallery. How Did Students From the 1910s Get on Facebook? Posted: 06 Jan 2012 05:13 PM PST There is a glitch in the matrix at the University of Nevada at Reno, where two students from the 1910s have joined Facebook. Joe McDonald‘s profile says that he likes to box, that his favorite musicians include W.C. Handy, Irving Berlin and Scott Joplin. He’s listed as “In a relationship” with Leola Lewis, who, according to her profile, enjoys embroidery and the literary works of Jane Austen and Edgar Allen Poe. Neither mention Angry Birds or Kanye West. The two profiles are actually the creation of Donnelyn Curtis, director of the university’s research collections, reports The Chronicle of Higher Education. McDonald and Lewis graduated in 1915 and 1913, respectively, and later married, according to the report. Curtis created their profiles after gaining approval from the granddaughter of McDonald, who died in 1971. Curtis told the Chronicle that the unique project is meant “to help history come alive a little bit for students” and expose the university’s special collections to a wider audience. Curtis writes all of the couple’s status updates, which incude messages that express worry about “a possible smallpox epidemic,” eagerly anticipate “sleighrides,” and recount McDonald’s job at a mining company. “It's been hard to walk the line between being historically accurate and making it interesting for college students,” Curtis told the Chronicle. McDonald’s photos include pictures of “Rugby Football” matches from 1912 and school field trips. Lewis’s profile sports photos from on-campus events and one shot the university’s representative at women’s suffrage conference. “Thanks to her hard work, Nevada women should be able to vote in 1914!” reads the caption. Curtis said that at first only extended family members of the couple sent friend requests, but each now have well over 100 connections. She also told the Chronicle that, in hopes of expanding interest in the project, she is considering creating a Facebook profile for another student who was a friend of the couple but left school to work in a mine. She also might invite more recent alumni of the university to create profiles depicting themselves in college during the 1950s and 1960s. For now, though, McDonald and Lewis appear to be adjusting well to their reincarnated lives online. In his most recent status update, McDonald wrote of heading back to campus from a nearby mining town and said he is “feeling lucky to have so many Friends, from all times and places, old and new.” No word yet on whether or not McDonald and Lewis are considering a switch to Facebook Timeline. What do you think of this project? Would you like to see more ideas like this catch on? Let us know in the comments. More About: Facebook, history, universities |
