Engine Advocacy Turns Tech Nerds Into Political Experts

Posted: 28 Jan 2012 02:00 PM PST

How do you turn technology nerds into political experts? That’s the question being asked by Engine Advocacy, a group dedicated to getting “tech startups, entrepreneurs and technologists” involved in shaping public policy.

The goal of Engine Advocacy is “to give entrepreneurial people and businesses a voice in the Washington policy arena that they haven't before,” according to co-founder Michael McGeary.

The group has a stake in a variety of issues, including an open Internet, intellectual property rights, privacy laws, broadband access, spectrum reform and immigration reform. (Why immigration? Engine Advocacy wants a “startup visa” to make it easer for people to come to the U.S. to innovate.)

Engine Advocacy has no registered lobbyists working for it. Instead, the organization seeks to teach Silicon Valley about Washington, D.C and to give technological innovators “action tools” for getting involved with public policy.

“Most people realize it's not good enough as an entrepreneur or startup CEO to take the feeling of ‘let me do my job,’” says McGeary. “I come from the political world, I’ve worked on a couple of campaigns and I've come to Silicon Valley and I've been heartened to talk to so many smart people that are saying ‘ok, let's figure out how to do this so we don't have to be passive all the time.’”

McGeary says his organization is a “loosely formed coalition” that’s growing “quickly by the day.” The idea to start the organization came before SOPA (Stop Online Piracy Act) and PIPA (PROTECT IP Act) became the hot-button issues of the day, but according to McGeary, they were the sparks that “set the building on fire,” so to speak.

“What we thought was a good idea in the Fall turned into ‘we have to do this right now.”

“What we thought was a good idea in the fall turned into ‘we have to do this right now,’” says McGeary. “[SOPA and PIPA] were a galvanizing moment.”

Engine Advocacy isn’t just trying to educate tech innovators about Washington, it’s also doing the reverse. The organization is making an effort to educate politicians on technology and Internet issues.

“We've met with several members of congressional staff,” says McGeary, singling out Sen. Moran of Kansas.

“(Sen. Moran) and his staff are really committed to tech issues and wanting to get more education about them and trying to find ways to legislate in more productive ways. We're young in the Senate, but together there's power in injecting these two communities and I've been glad about that.”

With SOPA and PIPA gone, what’s the next big fight for Engine Advocacy? We asked McGeary if ACTA (Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement) was on Engine Advocacy’s radar.

“Yes, but it appears to be mostly complete at this point. We’ll keep our eye on it as it rolls out, however, to see what implications there are for tech business going forward,” he said.

“We’re keeping our eyes on (SOPA and PIPA), of course, just in case they make a stunning, election-year comeback from being mortally wounded,” says McGeary. “Beyond that, we’re now taking some time to build and strengthen our organization and begin rolling out our legislative priorities for 2012, as well as beginning to develop campaign strategies looking toward the Fall. We’re looking at things like Startup Act and spectrum coming down the pike fairly quickly, but also beginning to beef up our web presence and policy research to be ready for the next fights as they come along.”

Do you think it’s a good idea to get tech experts and innovators involved with the public policy process? Sound off in the comments below.

1. Northrop X-47B Stealth Drone

This stealthy X-47B unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) is the size of a fighter jet, and will be taking off and landing from the deck of an aircraft carrier. This is an unusual overhead view of the scary looking plane, which was mistaken for a UFO last month. When will it be ready for battle? Unknown. It's a concept plane so far, but as you can see, it's in the midst of flight testing.

Photoshop CS6 Turns to The Dark Side [VIDEO]

Posted: 28 Jan 2012 01:11 PM PST

Attention, Photoshop lovers: Adobe is treating us all to a sneak preview of Photoshop CS6, and from what we can see, it looks amazing.

Adobe posted a YouTube video named “Sneak Peek #1″ on Photoshop’s official channel last week. In the video, senior product manager Bryan O’Neil Hughes gives viewers a glimpse of CS6′s Camera Raw 7.

In the video, Hughes loads a typical, not-very-high resolution picture he took of the Eiffel Tower at dusk with his cameraphone. He then goes to work with CS6′s Camera Raw, boosting highlights and shadows, sharpening and introducing new tools that Photoshop users haven’t previously enjoyed.

By the time Hughes is done editing, the originally unremarkable photograph looks stunning.

After Hughes’ Camera Raw demo, he opens up CS6 itself and introduces viewers to a very new Photoshop. What’s different? For starters, it’s darker. Much darker.

“We have a darker interface that allows for a more immersive experience,” says Hughes. “We’re able to focus on the image and not on the interface itself. Although, fear not, if you want to change the interface to look as it did before, you can do that.”

Hughes also says the darker interface comes from a desire to appear more uniform alongside other Adobe software, such as Lightroom.

At the end of the video, Hughes shows off a new feature called “rich cursor support,” which gives instant information about a brush’s diameter, hardness and opacity.

The video is titled “Sneak Peek #1″ and is the sole member of a “Sneak Peeks” YouTube playlist, perhaps a signal that more of these previews are on the way:

What Apple Could Do With Its $100 Billion Cash Hoard [COMIC]

Posted: 28 Jan 2012 10:26 AM PST

Let’s face it: Apple is rich. So rich it could send a crowd of people to the moon to build a luxury hotel and hang out there for a few years. Here’s what else it could do, according to our friends at The Joy of Tech.

It’s not surprising Apple is so deeply awash in cash, especially after its spectacular first-quarter earnings announced this week. You can see the details of Apple’s unbelievable numbers here, but will give you a highlight: the company’s revenues for the quarter were higher than its total revenues for all of fiscal 2009.

Apple’s so rich, it could give each of its employees a check for $6,622,516. The company’s worth more than $400 billion. Here’s more about Apple’s riches.

If you had $100 billion (or $97.7 billion in cash reserves, to be exact), what would you do with it?

6 Standout Apps Worth Downloading This Week

Posted: 28 Jan 2012 09:39 AM PST

Evi for Android and iPhone

Evi is like the iPhone 4S for Android and other iPhone devices running iOS 4.0 or later. It does the same tricks, like showing you coffee shops nearby when you speak or type "coffee," or providing the traditional answer "42" when you ask it for the meaning of life. It's search with an artificial intelligence twist. On iPhone ($.99) or Android (free).

Facebook hogged tech headlines this week with news that it was pushing its Timeline to all users and will IPO next week. But while the 800-million-person social network was making news, there were also worthwhile launches from great startup apps that you might have missed.

You could sort through the App Store’s 500,000 apps and the Android store’s estimated 300,000 apps in order to find them. Or you could check out our recap of the best new apps in the slideshow above. We’ve done our best to sort out the overly frivolous, the ugly and the downright impractical.

The apps left standing include one that accomplishes a popular Photoshop trick in two simple steps, another that will pool contact info from your phone, social accounts and email to create one list to rule them all, another that works like Siri for people who don’t have an iPhone 4S and long-awaited Android versions of two popular social service apps.

Have you seen any other apps this week you’d add to the list? Let us know in the comments.

Before IPO, Facebook Takes the Fight Against Clickjacking to the Courts

Posted: 28 Jan 2012 08:47 AM PST

Facebook is turning to the courts to fight the “clickjacking” scourge which sometimes plagues the social networking site. The news comes as rumors are circulating that Facebook’s initial public offering (IPO) could be happening as early as this week, with a possible offering of up to $10 billion in shares.

If you’ve ever clicked on a Facebook link only to have that same link get instantly (and seemingly magically) sent out to your entire network of friends without your approval, you have been clickjacked.

Facebook’s finally saying “enough is enough.” It’s accusing Washington-based marketing company Adscend Media of the unwanted spam-causing practice in a lawsuit announced Thursday.

"Security is an arms race,” said Facebook general counsel Ted Ullyot said in a post on the site. “And that's why Facebook is committed to constantly improving our consumer safeguards while pursuing and supporting civil and criminal consequences for bad actors.”

The Attorney General of Washington state filed a separate lawsuit, also accusing Adscend Media of clickjacking.

"We don't 'like' schemes that illegally trick Facebook users into giving up personal information or paying for unwanted subscription services through spam," said Washington State Attorney General Rob McKenna with a nod to one of Facebook’s most well-known features. "We applaud Facebook for devoting significant technical and legal resources to finding and stopping scams as soon as possible, and often before they even start. We're proud to join forces in order to protect Washington consumers."

In a clickjacking, users are presented with some kind of enticing material, such as a too-good-to-be-true promotion. The clickjackers add code to these links that hide the “like” button in the link itself. Once a user clicks the clickjacking link, it’s too late — the material’s already been “liked” and shared to the user’s entire social network.

The Washington Attorney General’s Consumer High-Tech Protection unit alleged that Adscend’s clickjacking practices netted the company up to $1.2 millon each month.

Adscend Media denies the claims.

“At no time did we engage in the activity alleged in the complaints,” said the ad company in a statement released Friday.

“Adscend Media will provide a vigorous defense against these false claims. Adscend Media strictly complies with its legal obligations under federal and state law. We are undertaking an investigation to determine whether any of Adscend Media’s affiliates engaged in the activity alleged by the Attorney General’s office and Facebook. If they did, we are fully certain that the activity was conducted without the company’s knowledge.”

Does this lawsuit have anything to do with Facebook’s maybe-soon IPO? Perhaps. After all, too much spam could cause Facebook’s value to drop.

“In the run-up to IPO, we’re sure to see Facebook doing more to present itself as company that is fighting security threats like this,” Internet security firm Sophos told the BBC.

In February of last year, a major clickjacking scam offered free Southwest Airlines tickets to users. Hapless individuals who clicked that link instantly spammed all their friends with the faux-promotion.

According to Facebook, 4% of posts on the social network are spam.

Google Doodle Celebrates World’s Largest Snowflake [VIDEO]

Posted: 28 Jan 2012 08:18 AM PST

Google is at it again, creating yet another of its whimsical doodles. This time, the search giant’s Google Doodle on its main search page revels in the glories of midwinter, celebrating the 125th anniversary of the discovery of the world’s largest snowflake.

How large was it? How’s 15 inches (38 centimeters) grab you? Imagine the looks on the faces of those who saw this enormous ice crystal the size of a pizza falling from the sky in Fort Keogh, Montana in 1887.

Click on the Doodle, and you get results about that humongous snowflake.

Even though this is a rather flaky excuse for a Google Doodle, by no means matching up with some of the other spectacular Google Doodles or that “Let It Snow” Easter egg we encountered recently, we still like the silly humor of the gigantic snowflake, functioning as the second letter “O” in the word “Google.”

This Google Doodle is reportedly only visible in the U.S. and the UK, so for those of you who don’t live in either of those countries, here’s a video that’s even better, showing you the same thing, but with enhanced audio with music and a perfectly timed sound effect:
