Posted: 28 Feb 2013 08:37 PM PST

Sometimes a smiley just isn't enough. If you've ever wanted to send a sound to express anger or delight -- or you just love cat noises -- the creators of TeleSound have got you covered.

TeleSound, a portable sound messenger, allows people to send more than 1,000 sounds from a smartphone or tablet. The device connects wirelessly via Bluetooth and uses a free iPhone or Android app to send emojis.

Each icon is linked to a corresponding noise, from clinking coins for a money bag to a surprised gasp for the shocked face. Check out the video, above, to see how it works.

Online Gaming Giant to Buy Atlantic City Casino

Posted: 28 Feb 2013 08:12 PM PST

After being drummed out of the U.S. two years ago, the parent company of several of the internet's biggest online gaming sites is looking to reestablish itself with a brick-and-mortar toehold on the Jersey shore.

Even before New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie signed into law this week a bill that would let the state's casinos offer online gaming, the parent company of Pokerstars and recently acquired Full Tilt Poker had already sought initial approval to buy the floundering Atlantic Club Casino.

The proposed deal represents the first time a virtual casino company would join with a physical gambling location in the East Coast gaming capital of Atlantic City. But the prospective buyer will h…

Like, You Will: Star Wars Nesting Dolls

J.J. Abrams might have been tasked with bringing the Star Wars characters back to life on the silver screen, but artist Andy Stattmiller is trying to shrink the whole franchise.

Stattmiller has created an entire set of nesting dolls replicating the galaxy far, far away. Everyone, from Han Solo to Obi Wan, C3PO to Vader, makes an appearance -- just much smaller than we've seen them before. The R2D2, Stattmiller says, is just three-quarters of an inch tall.

The set of dolls took about three weeks to paint, Stattmiller tells Mashable.

Take a Look at Facebook’s Redesigned Timeline

Posted: 28 Feb 2013 06:13 PM PST

Facebook is testing a new Timeline design. Currently live in New Zealand, the new look brings a slimmed down toolbar to the top of profile pages and repositions other content.

First spotted by The Next Web, we had a friend in New Zealand grab some screenshots of the update for us so we could take a closer look.

Check out the two photos below. The top is the new design, while the bottom is the older version:

Old:

The toolbar at the top of the page is where the most drastic of the changes takes place. Where there are currently large photographic tiles, there are now just text buttons for your About information, Friends, and Photos.

The Evolution of a Coffee Addict

Posted: 28 Feb 2013 06:01 PM PST

It started with one cup when you were 17 years old. You probably didn't like the bitter taste, but you just needed a boost to finish that sociology paper before your 8 a.m. class.

Nowadays, you finish your second cup of coffee before even stepping foot into the office. (Or maybe you're on a whole new level, like this this guy who ordered a $50 Starbucks drink.)

Where Was the Orchestra During the Oscars? Not Where You Think

Posted: 28 Feb 2013 04:38 PM PST

The Jaws theme song reminded Oscar winners on Sunday to hurry up and end their acceptance speeches during the 85th Academy Awards broadcast on Sunday. The orchestra played the ominous music as a forthright cue that inspired significant -- and hilarious -- banter on social media.

But while TV viewers could hear the song, they couldn't see the orchestra in the Dolby Theatre. That's because the orchestra was about a mile away from the stage.

Nestled in Capitol Studios, the orchestra did their live and pre-recorded duties from afar.

"The main purpose is space," Oscars broadcast engineer Hugh Healey told Mashable in Los Angeles, adding that producers still wanted them involved in real t…

Baby Elephant Playing in the Mud Redefines Cute

Baby elephant Navann here is just having the time of his life. No cares, no worries, he's just a little kid and wants to play in some mud.

The energetic pachyderm does more slipping and sliding than actual standing in those mud baths but seems to be living by the Hakuna Matata school of thought.

Ricky Gervais Returns as David Brent From the Original ‘Office’

Posted: 28 Feb 2013 03:57 PM PST

Some good news for fans of the original and best version of The Office: Ricky Gervais is coming back as antihero David Brent.

Gervais, who looks remarkably unchanged in 10 years down to his Van Dyke beard, has evolved the character somewhat. Brent, shown in this trailer -- the video above is a teaser -- is now moonlighting as a manager of musical acts. Yet he still lacks self awareness. In the cringe-worthy trailer, he's pushing one of his acts to do a reggae tune he wrote called "Equality Street," replete with improvised patois lyrics as the musicians look on, horrified.

The video promotes what The Hollywood Reporter calls a "short episodic skit" on BBC One that supports charity Comi…

Damon Lindelof Goes on Hysterical Twitter Rant Against Bieber’s Hat

Posted: 28 Feb 2013 03:30 PM PST

Justin Bieber was photographed leaving his London hotel room in a yellow spiky hat, thus providing fodder for a millennium's worth of Bieber jokes.

And while there are plenty of Bieber haters to call out the pop idol for his hideous life choices, the last person we expected to take a swing was Damon Lindelof, of Lost fame. The multi-millionaire, respected (questionable) writer felt so strongly against Bieber's fashion statement he spent hours -- over two days -- tweeting about it.

The result was a hilarious spree of tweets (see below) in which Lindelof seems to lose his mind while contemplating why the hat exists and which members of Bieber's team allowed him to emerge in public with…

Carly Fiorina: Workers Need Flexibility, Not ‘Edicts’

Posted: 28 Feb 2013 02:07 PM PST

There are far more female CEO's today than when Carly Fiorina first took over the top job at Hewlett-Packard in 1999. In fact, when Marissa Mayer took over as CEO at Yahoo in July of 2012, there were 20 women on the Fortune 500 CEO list -- a new record.

Today Fiorina is a former CEO, as well as a former political candidate, after an unsuccessful run for Barbara Boxer's seat in the U.S. Senate. She speaks out as a political commentator and has much to say on the topic of women in leadership and the current debate over working from home.

Mashable got a chance to chat with Fiorina after her keynote at the Harvey Nash Leadership Lecture in New York.

Upstart Video Conferencing Firm Uses Billboard Ad to Tweak Marissa Mayer

Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer's stance on telecommuting has proved an irresistible marketing opportunity for Blue Jeans Network, an upstart firm that provides videoconferencing.

Blue Jeans finished painting the billboard above on Thursday. The ad, which is positioned on Highway 101, just north of the San Francisco Airport, presents Blue Jeans as the official sponsor of work from home and beckons Mayer to "call us."

Mayer made headlines last week when she mandated that all Yahoo employees who were working remotely must now come into the offiice.

Groupon Fires CEO Andrew Mason

Posted: 28 Feb 2013 01:48 PM PST

Twenty-four hours after reporting disappointing first-quarter earnings (a move that sent its stock down more than 25% in after-hours), Groupon announced Thursday afternoon that co-founder and CEO Andrew Mason will no longer hold the top post at the company.

Groupon Executive Chairman Eric Lefkofsky and Vice Chairman Ted Leonsis will assume leadership of the four-and-a-half-year-old daily deals business while its board of directors seeks out a new chief executive, according to a release issued by the company.

In a letter sent to employees and copied publicly, Mason admits he was fired from the company, citing "controversial metrics" in Groupon's S-1 filing, missed earnings expectations…

A Musical Tribute to the Adult Onesie

Posted: 28 Feb 2013 01:41 PM PST

Enter the adult onesie.

There's a style for everyone, some even come with hoods. No need to shed those last 10 pounds, the magical onesie's fit will mask that winter flesh. Why Limiting Emails to 50 Words Is a Great Idea

Posted: 28 Feb 2013 01:00 PM PST

Mashable OP-ED

Groupon CEO Andrew Mason came up with a great idea the other day that has nothing to do with daily deals. Mason, who' was ousted after his company reported poor results in the fourth quarter, tweeted a proposal that would have profound implications for anyone struggling to reach Inbox Zero nirvana:

Possible to write a gmail script to autoreply & bounce emails longer than fifty words?— Andrew Mason (@andrewmason) February 25, 2013

As Business Insider has subsequently reported, a software engineer at the company took the challenge and wrote a script to apply the 50-words-and-under limit to Gmail.
