The Deep Web: Everything You Need to Know in 2 Minutes

In October 2013, the FBI shutdown Silk Road, a popular online black market where users could buy drugs, weapons, and even assassins. While this marketplace was operating on the Internet, you'd be hard-pressed to find it via Google. In fact, you would have to be part of a secret network that operates in a small portion of the Internet known as the Deep Web.

How does Mashable know what's going viral?
Mashable built a system called Velocity, which scours the social web, collecting lots and lots of data around how people are engaging with published articles. It then pulls all of that data back to Mashable, dumps it into our own predictive engine, and predicts which articles are about to go viral.
