New iPhone Will Have a Smaller Dock Connector [REPORT]

Posted: 23 Jul 2012 02:38 AM PDT

Apple's next generation iPhone will have a 19-pin dock connector instead of the current 30-pin one, Reuters reports citing two sources familiar with the matter.

While Apple has declined to confirm this, the report is in line with earlier rumors that go as far back as February 2012, claiming the iPhone's dock is about to go on a diet.

The smaller dock connector will "make room for the earphone moving to the bottom," Reuters' sources say.

While a smaller dock connector would ultimately benefit users, it will cause problems for owners of various iPhone, iPod and iPad accessories which will not work with the new connector -- at least not without an adapter.

Apple's new iPhone is…

The Conde Nast-title is planning to launch a vertical powered by user-generated content in mid-August. The vertical, dubbed "Community," will pull from a pool of bloggers who have applied to have their content featured on luckymag.com. The Future of Feet: Biometric Shoe Insoles Revolutionizing Security [VIDEO]

Posted: 22 Jul 2012 07:59 PM PDT

Everyone knows they have unique fingerprints, but what about a unique footprint?

Research has shown everyone has a personalized way of walking -- pressure of step, length of stride -- and a new lab is working to turn those individual foot features into a security measure.

The lab is developing biometric shoe insoles to monitor the characteristics of a person's feet. Sensors will record the patterns and a computer will compare the measurements to a person's master file. If it's a match, it will grant the person access to secured areas and the insoles will turn off. If not, it sounds an alarm.

"Within the third step, it knows it's you, an…

Kickstarter campaign SkyCube is trying to make that possible, but first the group needs help to get the satellite off the ground. Demand for Google's 7-inch Nexus 7 tablet seems to have well exceeded the tech giant's expectations.

Last week, Google posted a message to its online store saying that shipments of the 16GB model were delayed one to two weeks. Now, the store has stopped taking orders altogether.

Those who want to purchase the $249 version of the tablet are told to sign up to be notified by e-mail when it is back in stock.

The 16GB version is also sold out at GameStop, Kmart, Sam's Club, Office Depot, Staples, B&H, Best Buy in Canada and, according to The Guardian, Tesco in te UK. The only place to get the device online at this point may be eBay.

Kodak Loses Patent Case to Apple and RIM

Posted: 22 Jul 2012 06:36 PM PDT

Kodak has lost its patent case against Apple and RIM over technology for previewing digital images.

The International Trade Commission (ITC) said it agreed with a judge's ruling that stated neither Apple nor RIM violated Kodak's patent for digital image previews.

This loss could hurt the company -- which filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in January -- as it is hoping to sell its patents as a way to revive the company.

Kodak originally filed its lawsuit against RIM and Apple back in January 2010. At the time, Kodak was attempting to get RIM and Apple to pay licensing fees for using technology it said it patented over the way digital images are previewed on a screen. Kodak was seeking o…

This week, Mashable readers made comments that made us laugh, think and even scratch our heads. Jack Daniel’s Sends the Most Polite Cease-and-Desist Letter Ever

Posted: 22 Jul 2012 04:45 PM PDT

When Patrick Wensink was commissioning the cover for his book, Broken Piano For President, he probably wasn't expecting a cease-and-desist letter from Jack Daniel's Properties -- the owner of the Jack Daniel's trademarks.

Looking at the cover for the book, it's easy to see why the Jack Daniel's people might take issue with the design. The typeface isn't exactly the same, but the border and presentation is a dead-ringer for the classic black label of that sweet, sweet Tennessee whiskey.

Usually when we write about trademark disputes, one party claims that another party is using its size to "bully" to get its way.

Not this time.

In what might just be the nicest cease-and-

3 Reasons to Recruit via Talent Communities

Posted: 22 Jul 2012 03:07 PM PDT

For all its efforts to adopt new technology and adapt to the communication tools and needs of the candidate pool, recruiting overall is still in the dark ages. Candidate submits resume and cover letter, recruiters select the candidates based on their hiring materials, on paper or their online application they seem like a good fit, so you advance them to the interview. You spend the time and money to interview, but you still have only a 50/50 chance that the candidate you selected is a good fit. The problem here is that candidate selection still is a veritable tossing of the coin by the time you reach the interview stage. This is a waste of time and is fraught with error. I guarante…

Afghanistan Activists Urge Use of Social Media to Fight Politics

Posted: 22 Jul 2012 01:44 PM PDT

Free speech activists in Afghanistan launched Twitter and Facebook campaigns on Sunday to fight government media curbs as well as to dispel incorrect information being perpetuated by clashing NATO and Taliban claims.

Both NATO and the Taliban have used social media in the past to perpetuate arguments and campaign for individual causes. And Afghani journalists have been pushed against a wall with the government's new, strict press freedom laws, leaving the public confused about the current state of affairs.

Media advocacy groups like Nai have decided to fight back, encouraging the use of social media to provide the public with a more reliable and a somewhat more accessible form of i…
