Majority of Marketers Plan to Increase Mobile Budgets in 2013 Posted: 06 Jul 2012 03:54 AM PDT A new study found 70% of marketers plan to increase budgets for mobile in 2013. But is this really necessary? Scott Forshay, a mobile and emerging technology strategist for emarketing company Acquity Group, tells Mashable that mobile marketers do not need to increase their budgets, but rather should get smarter about their mobile strategies. In fact, budgets for mobile marketing could stay the same if more effective mobile campaigns are created. "A lot of brands have spent far too much money on mobile applications," he said This year, mobile ad spending in the U.S. is expected to reach $2.6 billion. That includes spending on display, search and messaging-based formats. And another… |
What If You Could Combine the iPhone and the Samsung Galaxy S III Into One? Posted: 06 Jul 2012 02:03 AM PDT Regardless of what your expectations of Apple's upcoming next-generation iPhone are, there's probably a feature or two you've seen on Android devices which you'd like to see on the iPhone as well. Some, like a memory card slot, have been desired by users for what seems like an eternity, but Apple wouldn't budge. However, one can always dream, and now that dream has been turned into a 3D rendering that looks quite desirable. The iSung Galaxy V, as the folks from Techradar have imagined it, is -- simply put -- the best of both worlds; an iPhone and the Galaxy S III melded into one device. It has features such as NFC, ultra-shutter, a memory card slot and iPhone's singular butto… More About: iphone, iSung, Samsung Galaxy S III, trending |

Wimbledon Fan Advises Backhand; Player Agrees, Wins Point [VIDEO] Posted: 05 Jul 2012 09:21 PM PDT Can crowdsourcing work at a tennis match? If one piece of shouted advice at Wimbledon is any clue, the answer is yes. The advice may have been a little sarcastic -- according to some fans, "go to his backhand" is the equivalent of yelling a request for "Freebird" at a concert. Or, the fan only knows, it could have been genuine. Either way, when Viktor Troicki receives advice on his serve in this ESPN video, he uses it to win a point against Novak Djokovic. Would Wimbledon be improved by crowdsourcing? Let us know in the comments. |

Man Interviews His 12-Year Old Self [VIDEO] Posted: 05 Jul 2012 04:30 PM PDT What would it be like if you could go back in time and talk to a younger version of yourself? Filmmaker and actor Jeremiah McDonald got to experience that process -- in a way -- thanks to a video tape he made for his future self back in 1992. Twenty years later, McDonald cut together an interview combining footage of himself in 1992 (at age 12) and in 2012 (age 32). The result is funny, poignant and ingenious in its presentation -- which cuts present-day McDonald against his improvised 12-year old self two decades ago. As precocious as the younger version is, he also has one or two things to teach the older McDonald. And at least they still share a love of British sci-fi h… More About: Doctor Who, trending, YouTube |

Secret App Will Monitor Your Encounter with Police [VIDEO] Posted: 05 Jul 2012 03:51 PM PDT The ACLU of New Jersey has just released a free Android app that allows individuals to discretely record their interactions with the police. The app, called Police Tape [Google Play link] will record audio (and if you want, video) of an encounter with the police. Unlike normal audio/video recording apps, the recording interface disappears when in use, so it doesn't look like anyone is recording anything at the time. The app also allows users -- at their discretion -- to send backup copies of the video to the ACLU-NJ for backup storage or for analysis of possible civil liberties violations. An iOS version is in the works, though it will onl… More About: aclu, Android apps, mashable video, New Jersey, police monitor |

Did Apple Respond to App-Crashing Problem? Posted: 05 Jul 2012 03:04 PM PDT That problem where iOS apps crash immediately upon launch? It may be gone soon. Apple appears to have responded to the issue, posting a message on a developer forum saying the company is aware of the issue and is working on a fix. The problem first received widespread attention Wednesday after Instapaper creator Marco Arment posted about it on his blog. Many users of his app began complaining on Twitter after installing an update that posted to the App Store Tuesday evening -- right before the July 4 holiday. Once installed, the app would not launch, only crash. Since then, the same problem became apparent on many other apps. Soccer Chiefs Approve Goal-Line Technology [POLL] Posted: 05 Jul 2012 12:47 PM PDT The International Football Association Board (IFAB) has approved the introduction of goal-line technology into soccer for the first time. Two separate goal-line tech vendors, Hawk-Eye and GoalRef, were given the go-ahead Thursday. The Sony-owned Hawk-Eye system is a camera-based computer system already in use in tennis and cricket. It employs four high-speed video cameras located at different locations and angles surrounding the field. The video feeds help determine the location of the ball by a triangulation method. GoalRef, meanwhile, uses microchip technology instead of video. A microchip is placed inside the ball, and goals are determined using low magnetic waves deployed arou… |

6 Posts That Build Engagement on Facebook Posted: 05 Jul 2012 12:23 PM PDT When Mark Zuckerberg first built Facebook, the purpose of it was to keep people connected with their friends. That was its first purpose. And it worked well. As Facebook grew, its purpose grew to accommodate businesses. Hence the addition of Facebook pages for brands. But many brand page admins make the mistake of thinking of Facebook users as "friends" who will look at company posts simply because a company posts them. That's not true, and it's not true because not all posts are created equal. Think of it this way, your business is not automatically friends with your audience. That only changes if you engage with them. Engagement on Facebook is reflected in three forms: lik… More About: contributor, Facebook, features, Marketing, online marketing, trending |
iPad Mini: Why It’s a Bad Idea Posted: 05 Jul 2012 11:58 AM PDT The tablet market -- specifically, the 7-inch tablet market -- got a jolt of excitement last month when Google debuted the Nexus 7, an affordable touchscreen device that also happens to be the best 7-inch tablet ever made. Now that the initial commotion has calmed a bit, many are casting their eyes toward Apple, wondering if (some say when) it'll debut a smaller iPad to compete directly with 7-inch devices like the new Nexus. Rumors about a 7-inch Apple tablet have circulated since even before the first iPad was unveiled. However, the Nexus 7 news has risen the conversation to new levels. Andy Greenberg of Forbes is reporting that American Science & Engineering, which provides x-ray scanners to governments and defense companies, has introduced a van capable of scanning nearby cars. The Z Backscatter Vans, or ZBVs, are used to scan for explosives, drugs and people, making them an ideal tool for security, law enforcement and border control agencies. The vans work by emitting low-level x-rays off and through nearby objects to collect a visual snapshot of other vehicles. In an interview with Forbes, Joe Reiss, vice president of… |
