Could Data Science Reduce Resume Overload? Posted: 19 Jun 2012 04:29 AM PDT A new job board called Bright aims to kill resume overload with a little bit of data science. Instead of encouraging candidates to apply for as many jobs as possible, Bright promises to cut down on unnecessary resume exchanges by showing both parties what is the best fit for them. To do so, the startup analyzed 2.8 million resumes submitted in response to more than 2.1 million job descriptions on its beta site. Hundreds of HR recruiters looked at the resumes and rated them based on compatibility with their corresponding descriptions. Meanwhile, a team of about 15 data scientists and engineers tracked the ratings and used them to develop an algorithm that not only predicts such com… |

We've had a chance to try it out, but we don't know the full list of specifications, and we weren't allowed to test certain aspects… More About: amazon, apple, features, first to know series, harry potter, Kindle, mashable, microsoft, surface, Thunderbolt |

The Internet Usage Patterns of Depressed College Students Posted: 19 Jun 2012 12:07 AM PDT Switching quickly from Spotify to email to Facebook can be a telltale sign of depression. A recent study extensively correlates specific web habits, such as jumping between different applications, with depression. The study by Missouri University of Science and Technology associates observed how 216 university undergraduates surfed the web for a month. About 30% of the students had depression, according to the Center for Epidemiological Studies Depression Scale, an official screening test for the mental condition. These numbers match the national average. Depression affects about 10% to 40% of the national population of college students at one time. Tilted Screens: The Secret to Apple Store Success? [VIDEO] Posted: 18 Jun 2012 11:19 PM PDT Steve Jobs was meticulous in designing Apple's iDevices, so it makes sense that tremendous thought went into designing the stores in which those devices are sold. The clean and modern interior of Apple stores may be the perfect canvas to display the company's shiny gadgets and entice consumers into making a spendy purchase. It's aesthetically pleasing, sure -- but there's also a deeper concept behind the way the stores are laid out (Hint: Even the tilt of the laptop screens is intended to coerce you into trying one). According to author Carmine Gallo, who spent a year researching the Apple store experience, laptop screens are tilted back about 7… More About: apple, Apple Stores |
What Does Surface Mean For Other Windows 8 Tablets? Posted: 18 Jun 2012 08:58 PM PDT Microsoft describes Surface as the re-imagining of the tablet, much as it describes Windows 8 as the re-imagining of Windows. Of course, that brings up an interesting question: What about those "other" Windows 8 tablets? After all, Windows 8 is expected to launch this fall on an assortment of different tablets. A slew of companies -- including Dell, Nokia, Lenovo, Acer and Asus -- have already publicly committed to building Windows 8 tablets -- either running Windows RT or on Intel chipsets. Part of the reason we expected to see a more media-centric tablet approach from Microsoft was because it seemed unlikely that the software behemoth would compete against its own partners. Robot Dog Ready to Steal Your Heart [VIDEO] Posted: 18 Jun 2012 08:49 PM PDT What, exactly, is the allure of a robot pet? Is it that you never have to walk it, feed it or clean up its "little gifts?" Perhaps, but whatever the reason, robotics, consumer electronics and toy manufacturers never stop trying to lure us with the another metal, plastic and silicone-based companion. The latest, i-SODOG from Takara-Tomy is tiny, puppy-sized and full of electronic life. Unveiled at Tokyo's Toy Show, the little robot pup is packed with servos (15) and sensors; it can respond to 50 voice commands and, thanks to a bit of artificial intelligence, change its personality over time. 20 TV Shows With the Most Social Media Buzz This Week Posted: 18 Jun 2012 08:32 PM PDT Buzz surrounding the ESPN broadcasts of the 2012 UEFA European Football Championship almost entirely dominated cable TV chatter this week. But while soccer fans may be rowdy, basketball fanatics are this week's clear social media champs. When the Thunder met the Heat for Game 3 of the NBA Playoffs, there was a perfect storm of trash talk and gloating (the latter from Heat fans) that totaled more social media impressions than the top five EURO 2012 games combined. Miami beat Oklahoma City 91-85, bringing the series standings to Heat: 2, Thunder: 1. Despite the Los Angeles Kings' first 2012 Stanley Cup championship title, buzz over last Monday night's hockey finals didn't really compete… More About: Entertainment, Social Media, social tv, social tv charts, Trendrr, TV |
Microsoft Surface Tablet: 10 Unanswered Questions Posted: 18 Jun 2012 08:20 PM PDT Microsoft made some serious noise in the tech world this evening by unveiling a new kind of tablet: the Surface. The new device isn't just an exciting piece of technology -- it also changes the game for Windows devices because it's built by Microsoft itself. Microsoft revealed many details during its event -- including the operating system (both Windows RT and Windows 8 Pro), the screen size (10.6 inches) and how the clever Type Cover keyboard accessories would work -- but it also left some key questions unanswered. Foremost among them: How much money consumers can expect to spend on the Surface. We likely won't know those answers until we get much closer to the release of Windows … More About: microsoft, Microsoft Surface, surface, surface tablet, Windows 8, Windows RT |

Microsoft’s Surface Tablet RT: How it Compares to the iPad Posted: 18 Jun 2012 07:52 PM PDT Microsoft's newly-announced Surface tablet is powerful enough to replace your PC, but Microsoft execs told press gathered at the launch in Los Angeles that Surface is a reimagining of the tablet. In fact, Surface is both a tablet and a PC, and will be available in two versions when it ships later this year. One is Windows RT, the other Windows Pro, running a full version of Windows 8. So how does the Surface tablet stack up against the iPad, the current tablet market leader? We don't have all the specs in yet -- Microsoft didn't release any information on pricing or availability. Hands-on With Microsoft’s Tablet: Plenty of Surface, Not Much Depth [PICS] Posted: 18 Jun 2012 07:19 PM PDT Security was heavy backstage at the Microsoft Surface launch event Monday. In what was probably one of the most controlled tech demos I've ever seen -- even Apple lets you handle the product more than this -- the media was ushered through a hushed white room in groups of seven. We clustered at each of four demo tables for a few minutes each. "It's like Disneyland," joked a security guard. He meant the near-physical way you are led from ride to ride. Linger too long, and things could get ugly. Ditto if you dared to take video too close to a moving, functioning Surface. The demonstrators gave us their spiel -- here's the Touch Cover, here's how it was made. Feel the quality. Admire… More About: microsoft, Microsoft Surface, surface tablet |

As Paul McCartney Turns 70, Memes Mark the Occasion Posted: 18 Jun 2012 05:40 PM PDT Paul McCartney, singer, songwriter and Member of the Order of the British Empire, turned 70 today -- the latest milestone in the life of one of the world's most prolific musicians. More than 50 years after McCartney first started penning songs for the Fab Four, the septuagenarian doesn't look like he's slowing down any time soon. Despite his formidable presence in the music scene (the Guinness Book of World Records once claimed that "Yesterday" had the most cover versions of any song ever written), the Internet endured the travesty of having "Who is Paul McCartney?" trend on Twitter during the Grammys earlier this year. Is This the Solution for How to Deal With Erroneous Tweets? Posted: 18 Jun 2012 03:37 PM PDT Twitter is celebrated for rapidly distributing breaking news, sometimes reaching vast audiences before that information is reported by the press. But sometimes that information is inaccurate, misspelled or taken offensively -- and it can be difficult to correct once it's saturated the Twittersphere. So how do you stop a bad tweet from spreading? Simply deleting it often looks suspicious. Deleting it and issuing a correction is better, but even then, tweets can perpetuate in quoted retweets and in screenshots (or, if you're a member of congress, remain forever on public display.) In an entry on his agency's blog, interface designer Oliver Recihenstein proposes an alternative. Give users… More About: journalism, Media, Twitter |
