How Much Data Is Created Every Minute? [INFOGRAPHIC] Posted: 22 Jun 2012 04:53 AM PDT Thursday's sporadic Twitter outages gave addicts like us the shakes. Business intelligence company DOMO paired up with Column Five Media to create this infographic, which shows just how much data is generated every minute. Posted: 22 Jun 2012 04:19 AM PDT After months of anticipation, Flipboard has finally come on board to Android and will available on devices including Amazon's Kindle Fire and Barnes & Noble's Nook tablets. The company released the Android version on Friday after launching in beta on May 30. In addition, the confirmed to The New York Times that Flipboard will come pre-installed on Samsung's Galaxy S III via AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile USA and Sprint. The move to Android comes after Apple named Flipboard one of its favorite apps of 2010. Evan Doll, a former Apple engineer who worked on iOS, told The Times that it was time to expand from just iOS. Google’s Jelly Bean and Two Other Stories You Need to Know Posted: 22 Jun 2012 03:49 AM PDT Welcome to this morning's edition of "First To Know," a series in which we keep you in the know on what's happening in the digital world. Today, we're looking at three particularly interesting stories. Google Gives Sneak Peek of Jelly Bean Google inadvertently gave a sneak peek of Jelly Bean, its next iteration of Android, by putting a mention of the Galaxy Nexus HSPA+ phone on Google Play. Google quickly took the item down, but not before Droid Life took a screen shot of it, revealing its price, $409. The mention on Google Play gives weight to reports that Google plans to sell the device directly, a la Apple. Google tried that route with the Nexus One in 2010, but consum… More About: android, features, first to know series, Google, jelly bean, mashable, microsoft, tweetbot |
Microsoft Surface to Be Wi-Fi-Only at First [REPORT] Posted: 22 Jun 2012 03:00 AM PDT The initial version of Microsoft Surface will only work with Wi-Fi and not with mobile phone networks according to a report. Citing "two people familiar with the matter," Bloomberg reports that Microsoft is equipping the phone with a short-range Wi-Fi connection. Microsoft could not be reached for comment on the report. Microsoft introduced Surface, its latest tablet, on Monday. The company has been guarded about details for the product, withholding its release date and pricing. Details about connectivity has also been scant, but offering a Wi-Fi-only device would put Surface at a disadvantage against the iPad, whose latest iteration connects to LTE networks. However, Apple also sells… More About: ipad, Microsoft Surface |
Google Gives Sneak Peek of Jelly Bean, the Next Version of Android Posted: 22 Jun 2012 02:39 AM PDT Google has inadvertently confirmed that the next version of Android will be called "Jelly Bean" and that it will appear in the new Galaxy Nexus HSPA+ phone. The phone showed up briefly on Google Play before Google took it down. The blog Droid Life took a screen grab of the listing, which placed the price at $409. The listing in Google Play also may confirm reports that Google plans to sell the next Nexus directly, a la Apple. That was also the game plan for the Nexus One in 2010, but Google eventually pulled the plug on that effort because of lack of demand for the $529 model. Though the report lists Jelly Bean as "Android 4.1," other rumors have said that's the code-name for Andro… More About: android, Google, jelly bean |
62% of Library Users Don’t Know They Can Check Out E-Books [STUDY] Posted: 21 Jun 2012 09:08 PM PDT As reading habits shift from printed to digital ink, public libraries are struggling to raise awareness of their digital offerings. The introduction of tablets and dedicated e-book readers has changed the way we read. Now, you're just as likely to find fellow commuters or waiting-room dwellers reading an e-book as a physical one. While our libraries are busy trying to keep up with the rise of e-books, it turns out their patrons don't know there are e-books available for lending. Some 62% of respondents to the Pew Research Center's Internet and American Life Project's latest library survey said they didn't know if their library offered e-book lending. Is This the Best Internet Explorer Error Message Ever? Posted: 21 Jun 2012 07:27 PM PDT Internet Explorer seems to be the anti-Sally Field, realizing all of the sudden that the web hates it. It really, really hates it. Last week, an Australian online retailer fanned the anti-IE flames with a publicity stunt in which it promised to tax anyone who visited the site using IE7. Now, an error message from a music website called Rage Chill has stirred up some IE hate with the message above. The message landed Rage Chill on the front page of Reddit on Thursday. In typical Reddit fashion, the comment thread showed a range of opinions, with some questioning Rage Chill's move and others applauding it. "Joke is on Rage Chill, they're missing out on a huge market of people who use… More About: error messages, internet explorer, reddit |

Microsoft Building Its Own Phone? Not So Fast Posted: 21 Jun 2012 06:21 PM PDT An analyst says Microsoft may be building its own phone. Microsoft says "not so much." How did we get here? Let's just say: Microsoft started it. This week, Microsoft did the unthinkable: It struck out on its own and introduced Microsoft-designed and -built tablet hardware, the Surface. It was a move that surprised many (including some Windows PC hardware partners), and got people speculating about Microsoft's other big move this week: unveiling Windows Phone 8. This mobile OS overhaul will eventually come to partner devices from Nokia, Samsung, HTC Corp and Huawei. Twitter: No, We Were Not Hacked Posted: 21 Jun 2012 05:22 PM PDT Twitter's record-breaking downtime was not the result of a successful activist hack, contrary to one group's claim to responsibility, according to a blog post from the microblogging network Thursday. "This wasn't due to a hack or our new office or Euro 2012 or GIF avatars, as some have speculated today," Mazen Rawashdeh, Twitter's vice president of engineering, wrote in a post to the company's official blog. Earlier Thursday, a group of hackers known as UGNazi said it was the force behind the outages, which were Twitter's longest in eight months. In an email to Reuters, UGNazi said it targeted Twitter with a distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attack because of the company's suppo… |
State Law Requires Sex Offenders to List Status on Facebook Posted: 21 Jun 2012 05:06 PM PDT Louisiana has enacted a new law requiring sex offenders and child predators to disclose their criminal status on their Facebook and other social networking profiles. The law — a first of its kind in the U.S. — says sex offenders must include the crime for which they were convicted, the jurisdiction of their conviction, a description of their physical characteristics and a residential address within their profile. It will go into effect August 1. Facebook already refuses to let registered sex offenders create profiles, according to its Statement of Rights and Responsibilities. Q&A With Twitter’s Biggest Pest: @CascadedBug Posted: 21 Jun 2012 04:53 PM PDT It looks like the joke is on the Twitter bug. Parody account @CascadedBug lived a very short life Thursday after quickly being squashed by Twitter. The account, which lasted a little over an hour, was created in the middle of a major outage on the social network. It was then brought back to life, suspended again -- and as of this writing, it's still tweeting, but the account's future is undetermined. Although it's impressive that anyone could create a parody account in such Twitter turmoil, let alone tweet from it, the company itself was not so thrilled. More Than Half of Kickstarter Projects Fail. Does It Matter? Posted: 21 Jun 2012 04:01 PM PDT About 56% of the projects posted to Kickstarter don't get funded, according to a dashboard the site launched Thursday. Around 7,000 of Kickstarters have never received a single pledge. (The site has hosted more than 60,000 projects in total.) But you won't be able to find Kickstarter's flops via Google. The crowdfuding site prevents search engines from indexing its failed projects -- a practice that had led some to cry conspiracy. "If you hide failure, it's hard to learn from others' mistakes," wrote Dan Misener in a blog post that prompted discussion about the practice everywhere from the New York Times to Hacker News. Kickstarter has maintained that they're not trying to… More About: kickstarter |
NBA Social Media Awards: Durant, Kobe, Lin Win Big Posted: 21 Jun 2012 03:36 PM PDT Jeremy Lin, Kevin Durant and Kobe Bryant were among the big winners Wednesday night in the first-ever NBA Social Media Awards. The awards mark the first time a major pro sports league has had a standalone event to recognize engagement on social media. Players and teams were celebrated for success on platforms including Twitter, Facebook, YouTube and Instagram. Lin was given the league's Social Breakout Award primarily for dominating the web during an improbable string of incredible performances in February. Apple Store Refused to Sell iPad, iPhone to Iranian Customers [REPORT] Posted: 21 Jun 2012 02:44 PM PDT Did Apple Store employees in Alpharetta, Ga., refuse to sell an iPhone and an iPad to Farsi-speaking customers because they said they would be sending at least one of the devices to a friend in Iran? That's what Sarah Sabet, a U.S. citizen of Iranian heritage, told WSB-TV, calling the experience "discrimination" and "very hurtful." Sabet, a 19-year old student at the University of Georgia, was reportedly at an Apple Store in a local mall with a friend to buy a pair of new iDevices. After Apple Store employees overheard Sabet and her friend speaking to one another in Farsi, they asked them what language they were speaking, where they were from and where the devices were headed.… More About: apple, Apple Store, ipad, iran, trending, US, World |

Twitter-Breaking Bug Parody Account Gets Suspended [UPDATED] Posted: 21 Jun 2012 01:27 PM PDT One thing Twitter is really good at is breaking news -- except for when the site is down. Coincidentally, the other thing Twitter users love best is creating parody accounts of current events and other topical subjects. So it should come to no surprise that today, when Twitter announced that a cascaded bug caused a major outage in the infrastructure, one user took advantage of the opportunity by creating a parody account. We're not sure who is responsible for the @CascadedBug account, but it's provided a little bit of humor to an otherwise annoying work day for most of us. Hackers Take Credit for Twitter Outages Posted: 21 Jun 2012 01:04 PM PDT Twitter has been up and down throughout Thursday -- and now a group of hackers known as UGNazi is taking credit for causing the outages. "We just #TangoDown'd twitter.com for 40 minutes worldwide! #UGnazi," reads a tweet sent from @UG on Thursday afternoon that was directed at accounts associated with the more well-known and widespread Anonymous hacker collective, as well as the media outlet Russia Today. #TangoDown is a term adopted by Anonymous and other hackers and botnet owners referring to a successful attack against a targeted website. Outages are most often caused by some combination of Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks and botnets. Twitter’s Outage Is Its Biggest in 8 Months Posted: 21 Jun 2012 12:55 PM PDT

Twitter was mostly down for another one-hour period on Nov. 29 from 8 a.m. to 9 a.m. EST, according to Pingdom, and suffered on-off periods for about an hour on Dec. 14, 2011, and Dec. 31 during peak times as well.
