Google Nexus Q: Ready for Party Fouls, Not Prime Time [REVIEW] Posted: 29 Jun 2012 07:23 PM PDT Google is calling the Nexus Q the "world's first social media streamer." When connected to your TV, this $299 ball can be used to stream tunes and videos from your favorite (Gingerbread or higher) Android device. If you have Android-toting friends over, you can also give them the ability to control the Q and play their own music and videos. Set to ship in mid-July, the Q is much more expensive than most music and media streaming devices. And sad to say, it isn't worth it. The Q is fun to play with, but it also has some significant flaws. Looking Good |

Why Olympian Nick Symmonds Is Gold on Social Media Posted: 29 Jun 2012 06:24 PM PDT Among Olympic athletes, there may not be a more effective -- or by-the-bootstraps -- user of social media than runner Nick Symmonds. How's this for -- as the phrase goes -- "leveraging social media"? In January, Symmonds held an eBay auction for the rights to his left shoulder. Symmonds would apply a temporary tattoo of the winning individual or corporate bidder's Twitter handle to his shoulder for every competition of the 2012 track and field season, including this summer's London Olympics. The marketing company Hanson Dodge Creative eventually shelled out $11,100 for Symmonds' real estate offer, but he's been forced to cover their handle with a piece of tape for many events and wil… |
This Paintable Battery Can Be Used Virtually Anywhere [VIDEO] Posted: 29 Jun 2012 06:10 PM PDT Researchers at Rice University in Texas have created a paintable battery that can be used anywhere. Also impressive -- the battery is rechargeable and can hold a 2.4 volt charge for six hours. To create this sprayable battery, the team disassembled the chemicals of a lithium-ion battery and converted them into five paints. These paints were then sprayed in a particular order, like a conventional battery cell, onto ceramic tiles. Then the nine tiles were lined up parallel and placed with one tile topped with a solar cell that converted power from a white laboratory light. This produced a steady 2.4 volts for six hours. The battery was sprayed on… More About: Batteries, Inventions, university |
Apple Gets Judge to Block Sale of Nexus, Android’s Only Jelly Bean Phone Posted: 29 Jun 2012 05:36 PM PDT It's not how Google would have wanted to end one of its best weeks ever. On the last day of a stellar Google I/O conference, where the search and software giant unveiled a slew of new products including Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, rival Apple successfully blocked the sale of the Samsung Galaxy Nexus. That's the Jelly Bean-capable phone -- currently, the only Jelly Bean-capable phone -- which Google had been handing out all week to developers. U.S. District Court Judge Lucy Koh, based in San Jose, just down the road from Apple's Cupertino campus, granted Apple the preliminary injunction Friday afternoon in an ongoing patent dispute. It won't go into effect until Apple posts a $96 mill… More About: android, apple, galaxy nexus, samsung |
Dora the Explorer Isn’t Playing Around Anymore [VIDEO] Posted: 29 Jun 2012 05:23 PM PDT We all know that a young Dora the Explorer from the popular Nickelodeon show is a crime-fighting machine especially when Swiper the Fox's sticky fingers are at work. (What criminal wouldn't fear those haunting, taunting words, "Swiper, no swiping!"?) But when College Humor teams up with Ariel Winter (the know-it-all middle child on Modern Family) to parody the kids' cartoon in an action-packed movie trailer, we find out that Dora (or at least a somewhat older, live-action version of her) can easily out spy James Bond and out assassinate Jack Bauer. And of course, how could Dora keep the gun-weilding Swiper at bay without her trusty monkey pal Boots, talking digitized backpack and… More About: celebrities, college humor, viral videos |

How Social Media Is Helping Colorado Wildfire Relief Posted: 29 Jun 2012 03:52 PM PDT In a crisis, social media is ideal for spreading information fast -- and helping disaster relief organizations get up-to-the-minute information about the situation on the ground. This week's wildfires in Colorado are no exception. Grassroots campaigns, alongside major relief organizations, have analyzed social media data to help people in the fires' way. Two Colorado Springs, Colo. residents, Scott Seibold and Robbie Trencheny, crafted a Twitter application which aggregates tweets that use the hashtag #WaldoCanyonFire, #WaldoFire, #waldocanyon and Colorado Springs. Why the iPhone Was Truly a Disruptive Product Posted: 29 Jun 2012 02:37 PM PDT Chances are, the smartphone in your pocket bears little resemblance to the cell phone you were carrying 5 years ago. That's largely because of what happened on June 29, 2007, the day the iPhone was released in North America. As I wrote on the anniversary last year, "every major smartphone that has gone into production since the iPhone's release has, in some way, been a response to the iPhone itself." Since 2007, I've written hundreds of thousands of words about the iPhone, iOS and the modern smartphone ecosystem. I have chronicled the impact the iPhone has had not just on Apple, but on the telecom industry, the smartphone market and computing as we know it. Now, on the fifth anniv… |
Twitter: The Romantic Comedy [VIDEO] Posted: 29 Jun 2012 02:06 PM PDT Soon after The Social Network came out, people created a Twitter parody of the hit drama. But it seems we're still craving some silver screen Twitter action. Actors Jason Ritter, Alison Brie, Daniel Franzese and Kimmy Gatewood star in a romantic comedy spoof called You Got Retweeted, which follows the burgeoning relationship of two people who communicate lovingly over Twitter but who hate each other IRL. The film already has associated Twitter presences, like @BabyGooseFinder and #HashtagLove, which when you say it out loud, sounds pretty silly. By 2020, tech-enhanced homes and buildings will be possible. However, experts predict average consumers will continue living the simple life. Twitter Drops LinkedIn Partnership Posted: 29 Jun 2012 01:07 PM PDT UPDATELinkedIn announced via a blog post on Friday that Twitter would no longer be partnering with the business-networking site to sync updates from one site to the other. This ends a partnership that began in 2009. LinkedIn users can still create updates on the site and click a button to share to Twitter as well, but the the reverse is no longer possible. The LinkedIn post by Ryan Roslansky, head of content products at LinkedIn, pointed to Twitter's own Friday blog post about "delivering a consistent experience on Twitter." Durex -- yes, the condom company -- has an app for that. The Facebook app for connecting couples is called the Durex In-Sync Song Generator and works by asking couples a set of questions completely unrelated to lovemaking like, "How loud is your personality?" or "At what time of day are you at your best?" The app then compares your responses to find the ideal song in Spotify for setting the mood. Durex, which has long been the number two condom company behind Trojan, hopes the app will help the company attract a younger demographic. In… More About: Facebook, Marketing, relationships, sex |
How Web APIs Unlock Value in the Cloud Posted: 29 Jun 2012 12:38 PM PDT The cloud is where it's at. It's where business data resides. It's where social user-generated content sits, where forward-thinking creators place their tools. Unfortunately, the cloud is also the place all that good stuff stays, unused and unloved. That is, unless you offer smart ways to access it. That is where a web API comes in. Just as the power of crowds has populated the social content repositories of Web 2.0 -- YouTube videos, Facebook updates, tweets, and more -- the web API enables designers and developers to re-purpose the body of knowledge that is the cloud. Here are some examples of how companies have used a web API to create more value. Mashups: The Google Maps … More About: api, Business, cloud computing, contributor, features |

Researchers Prove Drones Can Be Hacked Posted: 29 Jun 2012 10:59 AM PDT A team of researchers at the University of Texas at Austin won a $1,000 bet with the Department of Homeland Security by hacking into an airborne drone and wresting control from the pilot. The researchers, headed by Dr. Todd E. Humphreys, got control of the drone by overloading it with false signals that were precisely matched up with authentic satellite signals. Once that happened, the drone ignored the original pilot, instead obeying the hackers' every command. "We knew about the vulnerability and bought a drone to test it," Humphreys told Mashable. Basketball Star’s ‘Bulging Dicks’ Cost Him Millions [VIDEO] Posted: 29 Jun 2012 10:47 AM PDT Former Ohio State basketball star Jared Sullinger experienced some draft night disappointment Thursday -- but ESPN's reporting on the situation produced a viral sports TV blooper tailor-made for the YouTube era. Sullinger would have likely been a top-10 pick in last night's NBA Draft. During the intense pre-draft review process of workouts and medical examinations over the past couple months, however, doctors found back problems that made many teams wary of drafting him. Sullinger was eventually selected with 21st overall pick, meaning he missed out on a much fatter rookie contract. Google+ Creators: Stop Calling It a Social Network Posted: 29 Jun 2012 10:15 AM PDT Google+ has a problem. It's not engagement or the lack of a clear way to monetize itself. It's not those sometimes-unwieldy friend-organizing circles, or even the perception that no one other than nerds uses the service. The problem, its creators believe, is that many people keep comparing it to Facebook -- or, more broadly, social networks. While social interaction is a key part of Google+, the project is much more ambitious. Google+ is nothing short of a wholesale upgrade to all of Google's products and services, but with the identity of the user incorporated.
