iPhone: The 5-Year-Old That Changed the World [INFOGRAPHIC] Posted: 29 Jun 2012 02:31 AM PDT Love or hate Apple products, there's no denying the iPhone's indelible mark on technology, culture and business. Five years ago, the first iteration was unleashed on throngs of early adopters, who ogled its touchscreen interface and poked at little icons. Today, the smartphone concept is no longer the bastion of tech nerds and fan girls. It has become standard issue, thanks in large part to the iPhone's overwhelming success and iconic design. The device revolutionized Apple itself. iPhone sales were a tiny slice of Apple pie in 2007. In 2012, it accounts for 58% of the company's revenue (which, overall, has skyrocketed, thanks to a culture of iTunes and apps propagated by the iPhone).… More About: apple, infographics, iphone, Mobile, trending |
Teen Chat Bot Wins Largest Turing Test Challenge in History Posted: 29 Jun 2012 01:16 AM PDT If Alan Turing were still around, what would he have thought of thirteen-year old Eugne Goostman? Turing, widely considered the father of computer science, became famous for cracking the Nazi's Enigma machine and his Turing Test has become the de facto method for determining a machine's artificial intelligence. But recent news from the largest Turing test in history suggests even Turing himself might have been fooled by the seemingly normal teenage Goostman. To many attendees, Eugene was just a typical seventh-grader from a middle-class family, awkward with peculiar sense of humor. It was that distinctive personality that led to Eugene winning the t… More About: artificial intelligence, turing test, weird stuff |
Court: Kim Doctcom Search Warrants Were Invalid Posted: 28 Jun 2012 10:45 PM PDT When New Zealand police set off to arrest Megaupload founder Kim Dotcom and three of his staff this past January, they forgot a crucial police procedure: a proper warrant. New Zealand judge Justice Helen Winkelmann decided Thursday that the warrants New Zealand authorities used for seizing Dotcom's property -- including almost 20 vehicles, computers and pieces of art -- were illegal, according to Australia's ABC News. Justice Winkelmann also declared illegal the warrants used by the FBI to copy Megaupload data and bring it to the U.S. "The warrants did not adequately describe the offences to which they related," said Justice Winkelmann in her ruling. "Indeed, they fell well short of… More About: Kim Dotcom, megaupload, new zealand, piracy, US, World |

Why One Couple Turned to Twitter to Adopt a Baby Posted: 28 Jun 2012 04:02 PM PDT After almost three years of waiting to adopt a baby, a Michigan couple has turned to Twitter to get their profile across. Rick and Erica Jones have been on a small local adoption agency's waiting list for more than two years. Unlike larger adoption agencies, their Berkeley-based organization doesn't have the financial means to extensively market their clients. Nor do Rick and Erika have the money to go through a larger adoption agency. Before turning to Twitter, Rick says they followed the agency's suggestions to use fliers, newspaper ads, business cards and Facebook. None of those "traditional methods" got their case any traction. That's when Rick decided to turn to Twitter,… More About: lifestyle, parenting, Social Good, Twitter |

We've spent some time playing with the app -- which you can download from the App Store now [iTunes link] -- and trying it out alongside Mobile Safari, iCab Mobile, Opera Mini and others. Understanding the Trade-Offs Because Apple restricts the way third-party web browsers can work with iOS, Chrome isn't substantially different from any other mobile web browser. In fact, it's basically just the UIWebView (geek speak for the basic Mobile Safari rendering engine) with a customized skin. That's not a bad thing -- Mobile Safari is a great mobile web browser -- but it mean that users have to accept a few trade-offs… More About: Browsers, chrome, chrome ios, Google, iOS apps, trending |

Google Claims Chrome is World’s Most Popular Browser [VIDEO] Posted: 28 Jun 2012 02:37 PM PDT At Google I/O Thursday, vice president for Chrome and apps Sundar Pichai described Chrome as the world's most popular browser. To celebrate, the company just posted a video to YouTube that illustrates Chrome's journey since its launch in September 2008. Pichai, and Google's history lesson video, both claim 310 million Chrome users worldwide. The video doesn't claim a source, and Pichai was pretty vague about sourcing, according to reports from the conference. How Playing Games Makes You Live Longer Posted: 28 Jun 2012 12:40 PM PDT EDINBURGH, Scotland -- It's easy to write off our gaming addiction as a waste of time. But game designer Jane McGonigal argues the exact opposite; that games can actually extend our life expectancy. And she has the data to support it. McGonial, who in a previous TED Talk advocated that the world collectively play 21 billion hours of games per week, started her presentation at TED Global on Thursday by citing a widely-circulated study of the most common regrets of people on their death beds. She then detailed how games address all of them, drawing on her personal experience of suffering a serious concussion that left her unable to do most of the things she loved, like play… |
