Do You Suffer From Social Media FOMO? [INFOGRAPHIC]

Posted: 22 Jun 2012 08:52 PM PDT

Do you know FOMO? That's not some fancy latte -- it's Fear Of Missing Out, and something that's become a recognized thing by many social media users these days.

You're probably familiar with the concept, if not the name. Here's an example: It's been a long workweek and you really just want to spend Friday night at home watching a movie. But then that old familiar urge hits, and you can't resist grabbing your smartphone for a jolty fix of quick-burst information. One friend's Twitter post mentions an awesome concert. On Facebook, someone else put up photos of a raging house party.

Suddenly, your mellow evening feels entirely inadequate and you wonder what else you're missing out on. Y…

Why LeBron James’s Championship Is a Win for All Athletes in the Digital Age

Posted: 22 Jun 2012 02:59 PM PDT

A terrifically joyous tweet from NBA superstar LeBron James is currently going viral on Twitter. "OMFG I think it just hit me, I'm a CHAMPION!! I AM a CHAMPION!!" it says.

James posted the message early Friday, hours after winning his first NBA title. As of this writing, it had been retweeted more than 75,000 times, showing yet again Twitter's ability to connect sports stars and the fans that idolize them in ways never before possible.

Mashable OP-ED: This post reflects the opinions of the author and not necessarily those of Mashable as a publication.

But before Friday, James hadn't tweeted since way back on April 27 -- not coincidentally, the day before the NBA Playoffs began. He didn't announce a break of any sort but his absence was conspicuous and the message was clear: It's time for b…

Brick-Size Snooze Button Connects to Your iPhone [VIDEO]

But if you miss the big ol' snooze button of traditional alarm clocks and still want the reliability of your iPhone alarm clock, a company on Kickstarter wants to give you the best of both worlds with its snooze button that attaches to your iPhone.

For $50 ($40 if you get in on the early bird special) you can purchase the Snooze and support the Kickstarter project -- or "keep the dream alive" as the company says (pun intended).

Is This the Smartest Google Doodle Yet?

Posted: 22 Jun 2012 12:20 PM PDT

Another day, another awesome interactive Google doodle. This one -- which hits Saturday in the U.S., but you can see it already in the Australian and New Zealand versions of Google -- celebrates Alan Turing, famed British computer scientist, artificial intelligence pioneer and all-round math whiz.

Turing, who died a heartbreaking and utterly avoidable death at the age of 41, would have been 100 on Saturday. So the Google team is honoring his memory with a virtual version of the Turing Machine -- a concept that helps explain how a CPU thinks in binary, ie. 1s and 0s.

The doodle is incredibly hard to figure out if you're not a comp sci geek, so we hope it isn't giving too much away…

Robotic Fingertip Can Feel Textures Better Than You

Posted: 22 Jun 2012 12:09 PM PDT

Robots are one step closer to becoming more like humans. Engineers have equipped a robot with a sensor that is able to identify textures through touch, similar to the sensation in your fingertips.

The technology is so successful that the robot's tactile sensor actually outperforms humans in identifying different materials, which could be a major step in creating better prosthetic hands or industrial robots.

The BioTac sensor uses intelligent algorithms to select, control and interpret data for "exploratory" movements (like grasping, holding, etc.) that are similar to the way humans feel a piece of clothing or a hard surface. The sensor -- a fluid-filled fingertip that's the same…

Sharing is the basis of social media, and it can be a beautiful thing. Keeping up with family and friends as kids grow, relationships become marriages and adventures are had -- social media can be tons of fun and helps us feel connected to one another.

But when does all that sharing become too much? And when can what you share online actually become dangerous?

A recent study commissioned by Intel found that 90% of American adults think people share too much, and nearly half of adults find the deluge of information to be overwhelming.

The abundance of information isn't just annoying -- it can also make overeager posters targets for scams and other crimes. According to a recent Con

On Lumia, Windows Phone Update Is More Than Skin Deep

Posted: 22 Jun 2012 10:38 AM PDT

Microsoft's Windows Phone keynote Wednesday brought with it the official announcement of Windows Phone 8. The updated version of the operating system is headed to phones this fall, however it won't be headed to any existing Windows Phone devices simply because those device's hardware won't be able to handle the features set coming in the update.

That news was particularly upsetting for Nokia Lumia 900 owners. The flagship Windows Phone launched just a few months ago, and news that it wasn't going to be updated to the next full version of Windows Phone left many customers unhappy.

Although the phone won't be getting Windows Phone 8, Nokia doesn't plan to abandon Lumia owne…

Do Couples Need Their Own Apps? [POLL]

Posted: 22 Jun 2012 10:22 AM PDT

The "thumbkiss" may be one of the most clever inventions of our mobile-phone-centric age. Pioneered by an app called Pair, the feature simulates touch by buzzing when both members tap the same point on their respective phone screens. It's cute.

Or you might see it as an unnecessary component of an unnecessary concept: apps made specifically for couples.

Pair was the first of the breed to garner significant attention, and it has more than 220,000 users. Its main utility is a private shared timeline for couples that allows them to easily swap messages, photos, videos and locations. Couples can also doodle together, share a to-do list and, of course, thumbkiss.

This week, a pair of ex-…

3 Mobile Platforms Your Brand Should Leverage

Posted: 22 Jun 2012 09:23 AM PDT

It's clear that Twitter and Facebook have been incredibly valuable to marketers. But the reality is that they are saturated by a ton of brands, and unless a marketer has a solid game plan, it can be difficult to reach the right audience.

It's time to leverage platforms and communities where your brand can be unique, be heard, and engage with smaller target markets. This is the next phase of the social web: connecting with fewer people and making a bigger impact.

And given the proliferation of smart phone and tablet adoption, mobile is the place to be. Here are three platforms to use in that space.

The majority left their traditional employment in search of freedom and flexibility. Apparently, being worry-free isn't a part of that package; freelancers' top concerns are about staying professionally relevant, meeting deadlines and their lack of a clear direction.
