Moustache Madness: App Pays Homage to Rams Coach’s Burly Bristle Posted: 13 Sep 2012 05:02 AM PDT New Rams head coach Jeff Fisher doesn't just bring 147 career wins, a Super Bowl XXXV appearance and a wealth of football knowledge with him to St. Louis. He also brings a pretty epic moustache. To celebrate the arrival of Fisher, whom the Rams hope will lift them from the NFL basement, the team wants its fans to share in the coach's moustachioed glory. How? An app, of course. The Fisher Stache app -- free for iOS [iTunes link] and Android [Google Play link] -- lets you superimpose the coach's bristly trademark onto your own mug. You can take a new photo of yourself or paste it onto an existing pic, then save it to your phone, email it to a friend or post directly to Facebook fr… |
Conan O’Brien Debuts $5 Amazon ‘Wendell’ Tablet [VIDEO] Posted: 13 Sep 2012 04:19 AM PDT Amazon is known for its affordable line of tablets, including the 7-inch Kindle Fire, which recently fell in price to $159. But the company has debuted another cheaper e-reader that undercuts even its uber-cheap $69 baseline Kindle -- the "Wendell." SEE ALSO: Amazon Kindle Fire HD 7 Is a Great Tablet and a Great Value [REVIEW] It (he?) may be a figment of Conan O'Brien's imagination, but for $5, the Wendell is a real steal -- however fictitious. Sure, he may be larger and hairier than most other tablets, but the Wendell performs the same functions. As demonstrated in the hilarious faux commercial above, he can be used as an e-reader (reciting salacious tomes like Fifty Shade… More About: Conan O’Brien, Kindle, amazon, e-reader |

However, mobile-crazed teenagers aren't as unconcerned about online safety as some people think. Non-profit organization Family Online Safety Institute (FOSI) partnered with nine tech companies including Facebook, Microsoft and Google to build A Platform for Good. The newly launched online resource provides teens, parents and teachers the tools to raise awareness about efficient online safety practices. "At Facebook, nothing is more important than the safety of the people who use our service," The Facebook Safety team wrote. "We believe that helping families teach teens digital… More About: online safety, teens |

But you really don't know anything until you've heard this song. Set to a funky track that sounds like an Eminem beat, jazzman Paul the Trombonist raps and recites all the iPhone 5's key traits and specs. Paul, you'll remember, is also the man who brought the world the techie hit "Playing With Your Phone While Sitting on the Toilet" last February. Check out his latest offering above, and let us know what you think in the comments. More About: Watercooler, YouTube, iPhone 5, viral videos |

Flipboard Set to Launch iPhone 5 Version Posted: 13 Sep 2012 01:32 AM PDT Apple's iPhone 5 launched Wednesday under the white-hot spotlight of global scrutiny. Yet within the walls of the cavernous Yerba Buena Arts Center demo room, where hundreds of journalists, guests, Apple employees and partners squeezed among gleaming tables of fresh Apple finery, there were far more smiles than frowns. One happy camper was Flipboard CEO Mike McCue -- who told Mashable that his company is ready with a new iPhone 5 version of the Flipboard app, just as soon as the phone comes out on September 21. Flipboard is one of the most popular apps on the iOS platform. The social reading, magazine-style content platform has taken its lumps … More About: Apple iPhone 5, Flipboard, apple |

Get Up to $400 For Your iPhone 4S Posted: 13 Sep 2012 12:01 AM PDT Interested in trading in your iPhone 4S for an iPhone 5? Most of the popular smartphone-buyback services are offering good prices for Apple's previous generation smartphone. This can be a great way to recoup the cost of a new phone -- especially if you aren't eligible for an upgrade or are switching to another carrier. The iPhone 5 announcement means that tons of older iPhone devices are about to hit the secondary market. As we've seen in the past, that flood of devices can lower the buyback amount companies are willing to pay for your device. If you're interested in selling your device to a buyback service, lock in now, rather than later. That Time Dave Grohl Met Apple’s Jony Ive [PHOTO] Posted: 12 Sep 2012 11:05 PM PDT Jony Ive's cool-dude-o-meter ticked up a few notches Wednesday when he was spotted with Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl at the iPhone 5 launch event. Not that the Apple product design mastermind needed any help racking up the cool points. The Foo Fighters played at the Apple iPhone 5 launch party -- or the Ping funeral -- depending on your perspective. During the band's unplugged set, Grohl reportedly reflected on the significance of the event. Posted: 12 Sep 2012 09:35 PM PDT Bigger ScreenThe most noticeable change in the new iPhone is its larger, 4-inch screen. The display actually isn't any wider than the previous one, but instead extends length-wise to a 16:9 widescreen aspect ratio. Its resolution is 1,136 x 640 pixels -- that's not quite high-def, but it still has the same pixel density -- what Apple calls a retina display. The taller screen allows for five rows of apps (plus the permanent row on the bottom), and Apple says its colors are better, too. Click here to view this gallery. The iPhone 5 is finally here, and it's -- in a word -- different. The new iPhone is the most radical redesign of Apple's flagship product since its inception, sporting a larger screen, a different shape, more features and even new accessories in the box. Apple vice president Phil Schiller told a crowd of reporters and Apple fans that the new phone was "the most beautiful product we have ever made." It's certainly one of the most anticipated -- people have been predicting a radically redesigned iPhone for almost two years. Now that it's finally here, the smartphone has delivered on some promises (LTE!) and fell short on others (no NFC?). First-time iPhone buy… |
Watch Simon Cowell Choke Up on The X-Factor [VIDEO] Posted: 12 Sep 2012 09:01 PM PDT Simon Cowell all choked up? Hard to believe, but the famously hard-hearted judge got misty-eyed after watching X-Factor contestant Jillian Jensen audition on the talent show. The 20-year-old Massachusetts native sang Jessie J's "Who You Are" during a round of auditions, which aired Wednesday night. "That was incredible," Cowell says, while holding back tears. (Go to the 8:05 mark in the YouTube video above to see his reaction). Record executive L.A. Reid, pop star Britney Spears and singer Demi Lovato, who also sit on the judges' panel, echoed his praise. Dissed Fan Teaches NFL Team a Social Media Lesson on Twitter Posted: 12 Sep 2012 08:11 PM PDT The Kansas City Chiefs didn't know who they were messing with when a team staffer sent a brusque Twitter message to a disgruntled fan who had vented about the team's ownership on the social network this week. It all started on Monday, when decades-long Chiefs supporter Travis Wright (pictured at right), who uses the Twitter handle @teedubya, was texting with a friend about what they felt was absenteeism and stinginess on the part of Chiefs owner Clark Hunt. The team last won an NFL playoff game in 1994, finished last year with a losing record and dropped its season-opener last weekend. Frustrated, Wright tweeted the following message: I'm not much of a @kcchiefs fan anymore. Clark Hun… More About: Kansas City Chiefs, Social Media, Twitter, nfl, trending |
The Strange Details of the YouTube Clip Sparking Mideast Protests Posted: 12 Sep 2012 07:46 PM PDT Bizarre details about a YouTube film trailer that's continuing to fuel protests around the Middle East began to emerge late Wednesday evening. The 14-minute trailer for the film, titled "Innocence of Islam," angered many Muslims across the world because of its derogatory stance towards Islam and its depiction of the Prophet Mohammad as a barbarian and abuser of women. Early reports indicated that Sam Bacile, a California-based Israeli-American real estate developer, was behind the film. Bacile, who allegedly made the film to condemn Islam, was quoted as calling the religion a "cancer." However, as the day went on, some wondered if the "Sam Bacile" name was an alias. One indict… |
Find Out If You’re Eligible for an iPhone 5 Upgrade Posted: 12 Sep 2012 07:00 PM PDT Apple just announced its iPhone 5 and the big question for lots of existing smartphone owners -- especially in the U.S. -- is "Am I eligible for an iPhone 5 upgrade?" That's because upgrade pricing can be the difference between paying $599 for a new 16GB iPhone 5 -- or $199. Each major iPhone carrier -- Sprint, AT&T and Verizon -- has different rules about upgrades and eligibility date. Fortunately, the carriers make it relatively easy to check to see if you're eligible for an iPhone 5 upgrade, or when your upgrade will become available. Apple to Make Three Versions of iPhone 5 Posted: 12 Sep 2012 06:25 PM PDT
LTE networks vary throughout the world. If Apple wants the iPhone to be LTE everywhere, it has to create devices specifically to run different regions and carriers. What that boils down to: three different phones, each one supporting different LTE bands. Historically, Apple has always tried to create a single iPhone. It strayed from that when it released the CDMA version of the iPhone 4, but came back to a single global model with the release of the iPhone 4S. LTE is a different story than HSPA+, however, and requires the phones to be different. As GigaOm points out,… More About: Apple iPhone 5, LTE, apple |

iPhone 5 Launch Plays it Safe. Can Apple Still Surprise Us? Posted: 12 Sep 2012 05:24 PM PDT Wednesday's iPhone 5 launch had more than a touch of deja vu. Apple CEO Tim Cook's performance, though slightly more polished than in his last three product launch events, was largely a retread of his WWDC keynote. Cook still leads by getting out of the way, ceding the all-important announcement of the iPhone 5 to marketing chief Phil Schiller, just as he did at the new iPad launch earlier this year. The order of events was pretty much by the numbers, too. We started with an update on Apple retail stores, moved on to new numbers for the Mac and the iPad, had the main event -- the big reveal of the iPhone 5 and its new iPod brethren -- and closed with a musical guest, in this… |
Apple iPhone 5 First Impressions: A Remarkable Achievement Posted: 12 Sep 2012 04:57 PM PDT The media gets a first look at the iPhone 5
Click here to view this gallery. Apple iPhone 5 isn't the biggest or most powerful smartphone on the block. But that may not matter to iPhone purists, those who have fallen in love with the original iPhone 4 designs and were horrified at the thought that their precious device might develop a glandular condition and grow to near-tablet sized proportions. I got to spend a little time with one of the many iPhone 5 phones Apple had lying around the demo room (and in the hands of demonstrators). At first glance, I'd say Apple has achieved something remarkable: making the iPhone bigger, more powerful, and possibly even better, without changing the way it feels in your hand. In case you haven't seen, the new iPhon… More About: Apple iPhone 5, apple |
