Apple Rolls Out iPhone 5 Ad Blitz [VIDEOS]

Posted: 22 Sep 2012 04:04 AM PDT

You might think since customers were lining up around the block on Friday to buy the iPhone 5 that Apple wouldn't need to bother with a new ad campaign for the device, but you'd be wrong.

The tech giant rolled out four ads for the device Friday that tout various new features including a larger screen size, the ability to take panoramic photos and the new EarPod.

"Thumb," above muses on the fact that the iPhone 5 is the shape and size of your hand, a "dazzling display of common sense." The three other ads are below.

Oh, and that familiar voice in the ad? Dumb and Dumber's Jeff Daniels.

eBay, Grameen Foundation to Launch Mobile Marketplace in Rural Indonesia

Posted: 21 Sep 2012 09:05 PM PDT

Want to expand your micro-business in Indonesia? There may soon be an app for that.

Last week eBay announced its collaboration with the Grameen Foundation, a global non-profit group, to design and launch two mobile technology solutions in the Indonesian province of West Java.

The 18-month-long project, which officially started last month, is a branch off of the Mobile Microfranchising Initiative -- an existing Grameen effort that provides mobile phones to micro-entrepreneurs in developing countries.

This new initiative, said eBay Head of Global Social Innovation Lauren Moore, will aim to produce both a mobile transaction system and mobile marketplace for the existing entreprene…

Social Travel Apps Broaden Your Vacation Options

Posted: 21 Sep 2012 08:53 PM PDT

Remember when flipping through a Frommer's guidebook on the plane en route to a vacation spot was the way to figure out where to go, what to see and where to eat? Then apps replaced the weight of print and soon you could read the same reviews and information, only targeted more for you. Now social apps are turning your social media friends and their friends into your new travel adviser.

"I'm so reliant on technology and that type of a lifestyle that I'm not that person to buy a book," said Leslie Richin, 34, a social media strategist based in New York City told Mashable. "It's just not for the moment, when everything is changing. I want a real-time experience."

English Soccer Club Defends Player on Twitter After Racial Abuse

Posted: 21 Sep 2012 08:09 PM PDT

Chelsea soccer player Jon Obi Mikel quit Twitter and the club rebuked fans who assailed him with racial abuse following a critical mistake in a match this week.

An errant pass by Mikel allowed Champions League opponent Juventus to score late for a 2-2 tie against Chelsea and cost Mikel's club a likely opening round win on Wednesday night. Following the gaffe, angry Chelsea supporters used Twitter to send Mikel, who is originally from Nigeria, a series of racist messages.

Mikel shut down his account less than 24 hours after the match but later said he didn't do so because of the racial abuse, according to a Mirror report.

Chelsea then posted this message to Twitter on Thursday:…

iPhone 5 Torn Apart and On Display [PICS]

Posted: 21 Sep 2012 07:20 PM PDT

Sure, we all know the iPhone 5 has got some pretty impressive hardware under the hood, but very few of us are really willing to pull out a screwdriver and take apart the brand new gadget to see what's inside.

TechInsights did the dirty work for us, and provided Mashable with photos of a complete teardown of the A1428 model of iPhone 5. That particular version of the phone is optimized for the AT&T and Canada's LTE networks (there are actually three different iPhone 5 models out there).

MakerBot Upgrades 3D Printing With Replicator 2 [VIDEO]

Posted: 21 Sep 2012 05:49 PM PDT

MakerBot has refined the phenomenon of 3D printing with the launch of the Replicator 2.

Replicator 2 is an upgrade of MakerBot's last product. But the company promises a faster and stronger 3D printer, with better products that are built on MakerBot's "PLA material." The material is made from corn and leads to smoother objects that are less prone to cracking.

MakerBot has stepped up the price from the original -- it now runs $2,199 -- but it may be worth it for true designers and developers. The newer model has simplified its system into three-point leveling as opposed to the old four-point system that caused more errors in assembling calculat…

GameChanger App Brings ‘Moneyball’ Analytics to Youth Sports

Posted: 21 Sep 2012 05:21 PM PDT

Since Michael Lewis penned the hit book Moneyball about the Oakland Athletics in 2003, the term has come to be a sports catchall for using advanced stats and analytics to gain a competitive advantage. It's bled over from Major League Baseball to the NBA, and today those are the main pro sports leagues credited with finding new ways to measure players and games.

The app GameChanger, however, is bringing Moneyball-style analytics beyond the professional ranks and down to the grassroots level with youth teams. After launching a successful baseball service in 2010, the company is doubling down with a basketball version set to go live next month.

Here's how GameChanger works: coaches…

Making Science in the Ocean Cheap With the Robotboat

Posted: 21 Sep 2012 04:50 PM PDT

Doing science in the far-out ocean is hard. You need a boat, a crew, equipment and a lot of money. What if you could do it with robots?

That's exactly the idea of a new Kickstarter project called Robotboat. Behind the project are four engineers who aim to build and test the Roboboat Mark VI, the sixth version of a low-cost, self-propelled autonomous catamaran that's going to be equipped with all kinds of gizmos to study the ocean.

With it, the researchers hope to be able to study oil leaks, marine life, icebergs and even the Pacific Garbage Patch. Basically, they want to do scientific research for cheap with unmanned, completely autonomous sailin…

The 8 Worst Things About iOS 6

Posted: 21 Sep 2012 03:51 PM PDT

1. Cramped App Store

Although the Apple App Store's makeover is an improvement in aesthetics, search results are limited to one at a time via the iPhone, so you have to do a lot more scrolling. In theory, it's smart to highlight quality over quantity, but it doesn't always hit the mark. Plus, the layout is a bit cramped.

There's a lot to love about Apple's new mobile operating system , but with any new shiny piece of technology or the software that comes with it, kinks will exist.

Apple's new Maps app, which replaced the existing Google Maps app, a mainstay of iOS for five years, has been widely criticized since the upgrade was made available earlier this week. In addition to the app omitting transit directions, users discovered that mapping imagery included a confusing cluster of broken roads, misplaced clouds and national monuments all out of whack.

Not Everyone is Bothered by Apple Maps [VIDEO]

Posted: 21 Sep 2012 02:57 PM PDT

Justin Wilson is "not at all" concerned about Apple Maps. The avowed iPhone fan has owned numerous iPhones in the past and nothing was going to stop him from getting an iPhone 5, not even the transit-lacking iOS 6 Apple Maps program.

Apple's been roundly crticized for its Google Maps replacement. Apple Maps is not as rich or detailed as Google Maps (the default map program on the iPhone since 2007) and it lacks public transportation information. Wilson brushed it aside and says he can find the apps he needs to supplement Apple Maps anemic transportation details.

We grabbed Wilson just as he was exiting Apple's Fifth Ave. Flagship store in New Yo…

Facebook Kills Photo-Tagging Suggestions for EU Users

Posted: 21 Sep 2012 02:31 PM PDT

European Facebook users will no longer have access to the site's photo-tagging feature -- at least, not for a while.

After receiving demands from privacy regulators across the EU, Facebook has indefinitely axed its facial recognition feature for all European users.

Ireland's Data Protection Commissioner (DPC) Billy Hawkes issued a report this morning of Facebook's compliance with the recommendations, which were made by regulators last December. In it, he suggests Facebook has "fully implemented" most of the DPC's recommendations -- those that haven't been implemented, he says, will be taken care of with a "clear timescale" in place.

The DPC was pulled into the issue after rece…

Waiting in an iPhone 5 Line: The True Story

Posted: 21 Sep 2012 01:47 PM PDT

I left my apartment at 1:53 a.m. Friday and arrived at the Fifth Avenue Apple Store at around 2:20 a.m. Six hours later, I had an iPhone 5 in my possession.

When the original iPhone was released in 2007, the public was shocked that individuals were willing to wait for hours in line -- often overnight and sometimes for several days -- just to get a new gadget.

Five years (and six phone launches) later, the lines are an expectation -- even if the public at large still finds the concept of waiting overnight for a phone ridiculous.

Still, each year, more and more individuals line up for the latest iPhone (and now iPad). In fact, a sort of cott

Over 50% of recent graduates are unemployed or underemployed. Many are taking paid or unpaid internships for one to two years after graduation, unable to transition into full-time work.

Although the journey to full-time employment can be rocky and discouraging, it's certainly not impossible. So what are the other 50% of grads getting right? iPhone 5 Humiliates Galaxy S III in Drop Test [VIDEO]

We've heard all about how thin and beautiful the iPhone 5 is, how its Maps app is terrible and what people will do for one, but how does it fare in a drop test? The guys at Android Central were one of the first to get an iPhone 5 and quickly subjected it to multiple drops, comparing its durability with that of the Samsung Galaxy S III.

The result: The new iPhone is bulletproof compared to Samsung's flagship phone.

The excitable tester dropped both phones from different heights, progressively getting higher each time. He started with a drop from pocket height, then shoulder height, then from his ear and finally from about six feet above a cobblestoned road overlooking Hong Kong's wa…
