iOS 6 Users Complain About Wi-Fi, Connectivity Issues

Posted: 28 Sep 2012 04:25 AM PDT

Some iOS 6 users are complaining about Wi-Fi and connectivity issues with their devices.

Some are simply unable to turn the Wi-Fi on after upgrading to iOS 6; others' Wi-Fi is seemingly working but they're unable to connect to a network.

The usual "reset network settings" fix doesn't seem to solve the problem, and no complete solution has been found yet.

The thread about the issue on Apple's support forums is 94 pages long, indicating that these problems affect quite a number of users.

"Just upgraded 4S to iOS6 OTA and upon completion my WiFi is greyed out and disabled. I've rebooted the phone, turned On/Off AirPlane mode. Still unable to turn WiFi on," says one user.

"Sa…

One of the golden rules of online dating says: Turn off your profile after you've successfully found a mate. For two years, singles have flocked to the dating website HowAboutWe to meet their future significant others. As its users get engaged and married, HowAboutWe loses its best customers.

The dating service has launched HowAboutWe for Couples to tackle the "rapid turn" of users and to remain a relevant resource for its core customers. HowAboutWe's secret sauce has always been its user-generated da…

Voice-Guided Directions Dispute Torpedoed Google Maps for iOS 6

Posted: 28 Sep 2012 02:49 AM PDT

Still bitter your iPhone 5 or newly-upgraded-to-iOS 6 device doesn't have Google Maps? Wonder why?

You're now stuck with the screwy, much-maligned Apple Maps app because Google and Apple couldn't reach and agreement about voice-guided, turn-by-turn driving directions, according to an AllThingsD report.

People who use Google Maps on Android mobile devices have long since been able to get voice-guided driving directions. But iPhone users of Google Maps have never had that. As the rivalry between Apple and Google/Android has ramped up recently, the competitive disadvantage that discrepancy created for Apple became a bigger deal.

If you're a sports fan who spends much time on the Internet, chances are high you've come across something called "The Return of D. Rose." It's a series of web videos, produced by Adidas, that chronicle the return of star point guard and sneaker pitchman Derrick Rose from a major knee injury.

Last week, we did a short rundown of how the player and brand have used the web to turn misfortune into great marketing. More recently, we caught up with Ryan Morlan, Adidas' director of marketing for basketball, for the inside story behind the digital-first campaign.

A star sneaker endorser going down with a serious injury would typically be a brand's worst-case senario. But Morlan says an…

Time Inc. CEO Promises Less Free Content

Posted: 27 Sep 2012 06:32 PM PDT

Laura Lang, who took the reins as CEO of Time Inc. 10 months ago, sent a memo to staff Wednesday outlining how she plans to rescue the struggling company.

The magazine publisher witnessed a six percent decline in advertising revenue to $855 million in the first half of 2012, and a seven percent decrease year-over-year in subscription revenue to $581 million.

Lang, who previously served as CEO of ad agency Digitas, outlined a three-point "growth strategy" for Time Inc. -- focused on developing new advertising products, protecting paid content and developing a better content management system.

Although Lang didn't outline the "exciting suite of [ad] products" mentioned in the memo,…

AOL’s Awesome Social Video Game is Like ‘Taboo With Friends’

Posted: 27 Sep 2012 06:07 PM PDT

If you like the board game Taboo, you'll love AOL's new mobile social game, Clucks.

If you're not familiar with Taboo, it's a card game where you have a limited amount of time to describe a word to your teammate. The catch is you can't use the word itself, or a selection of additional words on the card.

Clucks [iTunes link] modernizes that concept for the world of smartphones, video and social gaming. Think of it as "Taboo With Friends."

The iPhone game works like this:

You are given a word to describe, along with a list of other words that you cannot say. Then you have 12 seconds to describe the word on video, taken with your phone's camera.

The next part is where the gam…

Facebook Welcomes Back Gifts

Two years after its last attempt failed, Facebook is giving Gifts another shot.

The ability to buy and send real gifts to your friends will gradually roll out to Facebook users in the U.S.

Facebook closed its "Gift Shop" in August 2010, in favor of focusing on Photos, News Feed, Inbox, games, comments, the Like button and the Wall.

At the time, it seemed that Gifts just wasn't popular enough to be in Facebook's list of priorities. But now the social network is ready for a new revenue stream.

You'll know if you have the ability to send a gift by looking for the "gifts" tab -- a little present box with a red bow alongside photo and post tags, or next to the person's name if it…

PNC Is Latest Bank Hit With Major Cyberattack

Posted: 27 Sep 2012 01:33 PM PDT

If you're a customer at a major bank, it's likely that it recently suffered a huge cyberattack.

PNC Bank is the latest national bank who has reportedly fallen victim to a series of Distributed Denial of Service attacks, a list that also includes Bank of America, JPMorgan Chase and Wells Fargo. As of Thursday afternoon, PNC.com was still down.

A hacker group from the Middle East is reportedly behind the attacks, which allegedly sent large amounts of traffic -- up to 10 to 20 times the normal rate -- to the site at once. Data is typically not hacked during denial of service attacks. Instead, the aim is to temporarily crash websites.

Could Your Office Use This Lower Cost 3D Printer? [VIDEO]

You might have heard of 3D printing and wondered what exactly it is. The concept of printing typically brings to mind a paper-printer spitting out documents stamped with ink. A 3D printer works like this: Designers create images of models on their computers and print them in 3D from these printers that use a resin to create the objects layer-by-layer. Imagine you're a designer or in a profession where holding, examining and testing an exact but miniature replica of your product would do wonders for the final result. While 3D printing appeals to a wide variety of professionals, quality and low cost don't often go hand-in-hand, according to the designers…

If you look at art that predates the 15th century, you'll notice that most artists didn't include horizons. Without a vanishing point, the scenes appear flat and, let's face it, oftentimes boring.
