Startup Takes the Legwork out of Giving a Helping Hand Posted: 16 Nov 2012 08:56 PM PST With Thanksgiving less than a week away, food banks are struggling to figure out how to keep up with the need for donations this time of year. In some areas of New York and New Jersey thousands of people remain out of their homes in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy. All too often, as the news cameras leave, the donations sometimes slow down. How can you help? Perhaps you've thought, "I'll buy a few extra items while I'm grocery shopping" but never do because you don't know where to take them. Maybe you simply don't have the time or can't get to a shelter. A start-up called YouGiveGoods is hoping to remove that barrier and get more items flowing… More About: Hurricane Sandy, online donations |
Republicans Flame Romney’s Digital Team Posted: 16 Nov 2012 08:32 PM PST Zac Moffatt, digital director for Mitt Romney's failed presidential bid, is emerging as a leading scapegoat for the Republican loss. Conservative media voices such as Erick Erickson at Red State and Mike Flynn at Breitbart are beating up on Moffatt on Twitter and in the press for what they say was an inept and overpriced digital effort. On Wednesday night, Flynn unleashed a stream of tweets articulating what some veteran Republican digital operatives have been hinting at. "@ZacMoffatt made millions while he screwed the country because of his incompetence. Can we please agree that he is done in politics?" In a conversation with National Journal on Thursday, Moffatt joked th… More About: Mitt Romney, election 2012, political campaigns |

Why Rich Countries Can’t Have $20 Tablets — Yet Posted: 16 Nov 2012 02:56 PM PST Students in India can now buy a fully-functional 7-inch tablet, the Aakash 2, for about $20 after a government subsidy, or about $45 retail. These are prices that could bring computing to hundreds of millions in the developing world, and their effects in rich countries could also be profound. But if you live outside the developing world, don't run down to your local electronics retailer just yet; you simply can’t get this much functionality at this price. The reasons are myriad, but they boil down to this: These tablets are already so cheap that your distance from the supply chains that build them can add 100% to their final cost. Twitter’s New API Rules Kill Windows 8 App Posted: 16 Nov 2012 02:18 PM PST What happens when third-party Twitter developers hit the API limit for user tokens? The results aren't pretty. When Twitter announced its big API changes back in August, one of the most controversial changes was the decision to cap applications that "replicate the core Twitter experience" to 100,000 user tokens (Twitter accounts that can access the app). Twitter clients that had built up large user bases before the API changes went into effect -- such as Twitterrific and Osfoora -- were allowed to double in size before Twitter said it would pull the plug. The same cannot be said for Twitter clients that saw sizable audiences after the new rules were implemented. Enter Tweetro, a… More About: Twitter, Twitter API, Windows 8, tweetro |
Netflix CEO: Amazon Losing Up to $1 Billion a Year on Streaming Video Posted: 16 Nov 2012 02:11 PM PST Netflix CEO Reed Hastings estimates that Amazon is spending up to $1 billion a year on streaming content for Amazon Prime. Hastings (pictured), who spoke with Dow Jones editors, said he was basing that stat on deals in which Netflix and Amazon have competed head to head, according to AllThingsD. Hastings also believes Amazon splits the spending fairly evenly between the U.S. and Europe, where Amazon runs the Lovefilm streaming service. Amazon reps could not be reached for comment about the claim. Netflix will pay about $2.1 billion acquiring content this year. The company faces competition for such content not only from Amazon but from Hulu as well. Amazon recently increased co… More About: amazon prime, netflix, reed hastings |

How Droughts Can Cause Power Outages Posted: 16 Nov 2012 01:50 PM PST Hundreds of millions of people in India lost power this summer, in part because of a delayed monsoon season. Rainfall may seem far removed from power plants, but the fate of water in a region often affects the power there, too. In India's case, the late rains meant farmers took more water from rivers to water their crops. The rivers were left with too little energy for the country's hydropower plants. In the future, water shortages could lead to simultaneous electricity and fuel shortages, according to a new report from the International Energy Agency. The Paris-based agency studies the global energy market and helps 28 nations coordinate with each other during an oil supply emergenc… More About: drought, national weather service, power outage |

Does Facebook Drive Sales? New Tool Helps Advertisers Find Out Posted: 16 Nov 2012 01:22 PM PST Does Facebook drive sales? That's a question posed by many an online retailer active on the social network -- and one Facebook is looking to answer with a new conversion tracking tool for advertisers. Here's how it works: Under Ads Manager, marketers can find a unique snippet of code to add to the pages on their websites -- say, the page that thanks visitors for signing up for a newsletter, or for completing an order. Every time someone who clicks over from a Facebook ad lands on one of those pages, it registers as a "conversion" in the Ads Manager console. Until now, marketers could only track the numbers of clicks and, depending on the ad unit, app downloads their ads were ge… More About: Facebook, facebook ads |

The two interviewees live on the two sides of the Israeli, Gaza strip border, separated only by a 15 minute drive, the CNN anchor notes. After the first few blasts, Sulaiman tried to keep talking and ignoring them, until a louder one gets him offline and interrupts the call. Share Your Next Airport Taxi With This Website Posted: 16 Nov 2012 12:10 PM PST You know the drill. You touch down at the airport and claim your luggage; maybe grab some coffee, run to the restroom or make a quick phone call. But your trip's not over quite yet. You still need to get into the city. Soundslice Will Revolutionize How Guitarists Learn From YouTube Posted: 16 Nov 2012 11:40 AM PST As of yesterday, there were only two ways to learn guitar music from the web: Googling a tablature file and emulating another guitarist on YouTube. While both are easier (and cheaper) than buying a book of sheet music, they are not without tedium. Tablature files (or "tabs" -- a simplified guitar notation in plain text format) are aggregated by shady content farms with strong SEO and dubious quality control. YouTube videos provide audio and visual instruction, but require patience and the ability to "read the fingers" of the performer. That's why Soundslice is a revelation for self-taught musicians. Built on YouTube's API, it's a transcription interface that syncs tablature and… |
How Much Is the Internet’s Electric Bill? [INFOGRAPHIC] Posted: 16 Nov 2012 11:25 AM PST While surfing the web, you're probably more concerned with the charge left on your laptop's battery. But how much power does it require to keep the Internet itself running? Powering worldwide data centers for major web companies like Google and Amazon is a huge undertaking. Between the servers and their cooling systems, these "data barns" consume 30 billion watts annually, about 1.5% of global electricity.
