Google to Offer Music and Movies to Google TV Owners in Europe

google tv

Google will start offering Google Play music and movies to Google TV owners in the UK, Germany and France starting November 13, the company has announced.

Google previously announced the service will also be available in Canada and Australia on that date as well, but that hasn't happened. Google has apologized for that announcement, adding it's bringing Google Play to more countries "all the time."

The ability to buy or rent movies, TV shows and music through Google Play on a Google TV device was initially launched in the U.S. in October 2012. Users can buy or rent content directly on a Google TV, and purchases they've made on other devices are automatically made available on…

Four Steps for Using Your Mobile Device to Jumpstart Your Love Life

Posted: 09 Nov 2012 03:52 AM PST

Girl texting

It's easy to celebrate the benefits of technology, particularly the access to information and connectivity provided to us by our mobile devices. However, there is at least one major drawback to living in an era where there are more cell phones than people. It's much harder to have real, serendipitous, potentially romantic run-ins with people we might have otherwise met if we weren't constantly drooling over a retina display. Think
about it: how many times have you avoided a conversation with the cute stranger on the bus or at the bar or in the waiting room because you'd prefer to look at Taylor Swift's Instagram feed?

Happy 8th Birthday, Firefox!

Posted: 09 Nov 2012 01:24 AM PST

On November 9 2004, eight years ago today, the Mozilla foundation has launched the first version of Firefox.

This anniversary may be confusing for some, as we've recently compiled a timeline of Firefox's first 10 years. This is because the browser that would eventually become Firefox, called Phoenix, was actually launched as a beta in 2002. When the first full version of the browser was launched in 2004, it was renamed to Firefox.

Mozilla's open source browser was seen as a breath of fresh air at the time when Microsoft's Internet Explorer 6 dominated the market share, annoying many users with its numerous security issues.

Over the years, Firefox captured a sizable chunk of the m…

Gramophone Amplifies Your iPhone, Edison-Style

Listening to music from your phone is tough. Without headphones, and with the volume turned all the way up, you still need to connect to a speaker to really enjoy what song is playing.

But what if you're in the mood for something a little more vintage? Say, 1877-vintage? Restoration Hardware recently released the iPhone Gramophone -- and, yes, it's just what you'd think it is.

Nanotech Gloves Heat Hands to Ideal Temperature

Posted: 08 Nov 2012 08:39 PM PST

It's difficult to keep your hands toasty in cold weather, even when you're wearing Thinsulate-lined everything. We take gloves on-and-off, making it more challenging to keep our hands warm on cold days or when we're skiing the slopes.

But there are some pricey high-tech gloves that fit the bill -- using sensors to detect when our digits get too chilly, so the gloves can warm them back up.

The Chaval Response-XRT gloves ($390) are for the ultimate outdoors person -- or anyone who intends to spend some time in freezing conditions. If you slip your hands into the gloves and one of your fingers is cold, the proprietary nanotechnology (in the form of a thin film inside the glove) wi…

Lung-on-a-Chip Passes a Crucial Test

Posted: 08 Nov 2012 08:03 PM PST

Researchers at the Wyss Institute for Biologically Inspired Engineering at Harvard University have shown that their "lung-on-a-chip" technology can mimic a life-threatening lung condition. They also report that scientists can uncover new aspects of the disease using the lung chip that would not be found with animal experiments.

The study, published in today's Science Translational Medicine, is the first definitive demonstration that the institute's organ-mimicking chips, which include a gut, a heart, and a kidney, can be used to model a disease and even test candidate drugs.

The lung-on-a-chip device is a clear, flexible thumb-sized block of polymer perforated by two tiny c…

iPad Mini Wins in Eye-Tracking Study [VIDEO]

Posted: 08 Nov 2012 07:43 PM PST

When it comes to buying tablets, do the eyes have it?

A recent study by EyeTrackShop placed the top 7-inch tablets in front of participants and tracked their eye movements in a study to determine which one was most popular among consumers.

Facing off were the iPad mini, the Nexus 7, the Nook HD and Kindle Fire HD. Shown to test subjects along with the company's current advertising campaign, the iPad Mini created a 40% higher purchase intent than its competitors.

That means that by simply looking at the iPad Mini, users were more interested in buying from Apple than the others in the line up.

It's no wonder, then, that Apple applied for a…

The Most Important Education Technology in 200 Years

Posted: 08 Nov 2012 07:08 PM PST

If you were asked to name the most important innovation in transportation over the last 200 years, you might say the combustion engine, air travel, Henry Ford's Model-T production line or even the bicycle. The list goes on.

Now answer this one: What's been the single biggest innovation in education?

Don't worry if you come up blank. You're supposed to. The question is a gambit used by Anant Agarwal, the computer scientist named this year to head edX, a $60 million MIT-Harvard effort to stream a college education over the web, free, to anyone who wants one. His point: It's rare to see major technological advances in how people learn.

Agarwal believes that education is a…

Insane Attempted Plane Theft Ends in Big Crash [VIDEO]

Posted: 08 Nov 2012 05:46 PM PST

Here's something you don't see everyday: a man attempting to steal a plane from the airport and using reverse thrust -- typically deployed to slow a plane down after landing -- to drive the plane backward, then crashing into a terminal. This all happened at the SkyWest Airlines home base airport in St. George, Utah, back in July, according the news site NYCaviation.com, but the astonishing video of the incident (embedded above) just became available on Thursday.

The plane "sheared its right wing into the terminal, plowed through the perimeter fence and collapsed its nose gear before taking out six cars and coming to rest in a ditch adjacent to a car parking lot," NYCaviation reports.…

Apple Patents Packaging That Doubles as a Dock

Posted: 08 Nov 2012 03:16 PM PST

While many people were displeased when Apple announced it wouldn't produce an official dock for the iPhone 5, the company apparently isn't done with the dock altogether.

According to Patently Apple, a recent patent filing details a new form of iOS device packaging that transforms into a dock.

As pictured, the concept looks very similar to Apple's current iOS device packaging. But the magic happens after the lid is removed from the packaging as the base can be converted into a dock that could accommodate something like an iPhone or iPod touch.

And the packaging could also be sized to hold a number of items – like other personal electronic devices, and even an iPad.

‘Settlers of Catan’ Gets a New Game Board Thanks to Kickstarter

Posted: 08 Nov 2012 02:27 PM PST

Catan Playing Surface

It was a hot June night in San Luis Obispo, Calif. At about 1 a.m., after a marathon session of The Settlers of Catan, two friends decided to solve a problem that has plagued players since the game's release in the mid-1990s -- the flimsy cardboard playing surface.

Feeling frustrated, Bill Trammel posed a simple question to Nate Veldkamp: "Why don't we just solve this whole Catan board problem?"

Even though it was past the witching hour, Trammel and Veldkamp got right to work designing a sturdier playing surface. They posted their work on Facebook, and when their friends reacted positively to the idea, they decided to take it a step further.

Here's the original rendering th…

New Xenoceratops Dinosaur Discovered in Canada

Posted: 08 Nov 2012 02:15 PM PST

Meet Xenoceratops foremostensis, a brand-new species of ceratopsid, or horned dinosaur. The species was discovered in the plentiful fossil beds of Canada. Weighing in at 2 tons and about 20 feet long, Xenoceratops — meaning "alien-horned face" — lived about 80 million years ago, making it one of the oldest big-bodied horned dinosaurs known to paleontologists.

Though it has only recently been identified as a separate species, Xenoceratops was identified from fossils discovered in 1958, only to be misidentified for several decades before taking its rightful place as a separate species.

Xenoceratops' name comes from its enormous and elaborate set of facial horns, suggesting to…
