Microsoft: Windows Phone 7.8 is Coming in Early 2013

Posted: 29 Nov 2012 12:32 AM PST

wp7.8

Microsoft's Windows Phone 7.8, the next iteration of the WP7 platform, is coming in early 2013, the company announced Wednesday.

The news disproves a recent rumor that pegged the release for Nov. 28, though Microsoft did publish a blog post revealing the actual launch time on that day.

In the post, Microsoft says the Windows Phone 7.8 update is coming to WP7.5 devices, but that there will also be new devices launched with the new OS, mostly at lower price points.

The post also mentions several of the most important (and mostly already publicized) new features in 7.8, including resizable Live Tiles, double the number of theme and accent colors (now totaling 20), Bing-adorned l…

Cat Friend Vs. Dog Friend: If Humans Were Pets [VIDEO]

Posted: 29 Nov 2012 12:02 AM PST

A new YouTube video sets out to answer the classic question: Do you prefer dogs or cats?

But rather than feature the furry rivals in an animalistic showdown, the video has humans starring as our favorite pets. There's "dog-friend" and "cat-friend" -- both of whom live with a nameless Average Joe, our human (acting as a human).

Much like their real-life counterparts, the two pet-friends live up to their respective stereotypes. Dog-friend greets Average Joe with hysterical excitement, and constantly lavishes him with attention. Cat-friend, on the other hand, basically glowers and ignores Average Joe throughout the entire two-and-a-half-minute video.

Since going online last week, "…

How to Master Instagram Tilt-Shift

Posted: 28 Nov 2012 10:55 PM PST

Instagram Tilt-Shift

Instagram's tilt-shift effect is the finishing touch on a work of smartphone art. It can be a masterstroke or a muddy mess, depending on how you use it. Too often, we've seen tilt-shift overused, misappropriated or misunderstood.

SEE ALSO: How to Choose the Best Instagram Filter for Your Photo

For the uninitiated, the tilt-shift effect is used by photographers to highlight a plane or exaggerate a minimal depth-of-field. It's simulated in Instagram with a blur tool that comes in two flavors: linear and circular. Though simplified, the tool can be powerful if used wisely.

Don't let bad shift happen to you. Heed these tips, and you'll be pinching and spreading your…

Phishing Scams and Spam Reportedly Down in October

Posted: 28 Nov 2012 10:28 PM PST

Phishing scams on social networks have shrunk considerably in October, and spam in general has decreased too, according to a report by Internet security giant Kaspersky Lab released last Friday.

Compared to September, phishing attacks -- emails that trick users into sharing private or financial information with hackers that can then steal their money -- decreased by more than 10% last month. Even though that's clearly good news, it wasn't exactly a surprise for the analysts at Kaspersky Lab.

"The fact is that in summer phishers mostly attack schoolchildren and students who spend lots of time surfing the Internet during their holidays," writes Darya Gudkova, Kaspersky Lab's head of…

Dropcam Launches New iPad App

Posted: 28 Nov 2012 10:00 PM PST

Dropcam has recently launched a new iPad app that allows users to watch multiple streams on an Apple tablet. The app is designed to allow you to take a peek at what's going on in front of your Dropcam camera at anytime, from anywhere.

With both your Dropcam installed at home and the app, you can watch up to four simultaneous streams -- both from your own cameras or from a shared or public stream. You can also set up the app to receive push notifications on your tablet or phone as well as emails anytime something happens (for example, if somebody unplugs it or if there's noise in the house). Unfortunately, the notifications can't currently be customized, so you can't set the app to not…

This Is How Much Time You Spend on Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr

Posted: 28 Nov 2012 07:27 PM PST

Social media now accounts for 18% of time spent online, according to a new infographic.

Since 2006, the amount of time that the average person spent on social-networking sites has more than doubled, from 2.7 hours to 6.9 hours per month. More people are using social media, as well. While only 24% of Americans had a single social-media profile in 2008, 56% of Americans do now.

Between the different social media sites, Facebook is, unsurprisingly, king. The average Facebook user spends almost seven hours each month on the site -- that's well ahead of Tumblr and Pinterest, which tie for second place for most time spent. The average visitor to Twitter, LinkedIn and Google+ spends less tha…

Permanent Samsung Printer Password Puts Networks at Risk

Posted: 28 Nov 2012 06:28 PM PST

A permanent password built into Samsung printers could give an attacker access to sensitive networks, information system configuration controls and any information the printer receives, a United States Computer Emergency Readiness Team (US-CERT) advisory warned Monday.

The flaw does not affect models released after Oct. 31, Samsung said, but does affect Dell printers manufactured by Samsung.

Samsung has a patch to fix the flaw in the works and administrators and IT departments can mitigate the threat by only allowing connections to trusted networks, the CERT advisory said.

This security flaw is a reminder that network vulnerabilities can be exploited on devices other than comput…

Space Weather Forecast System Could Cost $2 Billion

Posted: 28 Nov 2012 05:07 PM PST

Variations in space weather have the potential to disrupt the electric power grid, telecommunications and Global Positioning Systems -- virtually all public infrastructure. To predict such disruptions, a comprehensive space weather forecasting system could cost between $1 billion and $2 billion during the next decade, space scientists told members of the House Space, Science and Technology Committee on Wednesday.

Costs would include replacing the Advanced Composition Explorer satellite, which provides data for geomagnetic storm warnings issued by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Space Weather Prediction Center, which has operated 13 years beyond its two-year…

Facebook Wants Your Credit Card Information

Posted: 28 Nov 2012 04:41 PM PST

After the re-launch of Gifts, Facebook seems extra motivated to get your credit card information and physical address, in what could be another attempt to gather more data about you and sell more targeted ads.

The social network recently launched its Gift service after shutting it down in 2010 for lack of traction. The re-launch is seen as a way to appease investors, generate a new revenue stream and, of course, keep harvesting data.

"Gifts should also contribute more to Facebook's treasure trove of user data, which has the benefit of a virtuous cycle, driving more personalization of the site, leading to better and more targeted ads, which im…

Let’s Face it: Most Social Media Marketing Is a Waste of Time

Posted: 28 Nov 2012 04:22 PM PST

Mashable OP-ED

The social media marketing backlash has begun. Blame the unlikely team of The Onion and IBM. The former dropped a pitch-perfect takedown of socmedia "experts" right before Thanksgiving. Then Big Blue released data that showed Facebook had almost zero effect on Black Friday sales, and Twitter actually had zero.

The one-two punch confirmed my deep suspicion that a lot of the buzzword-laden blather around social media marketing the past few years was itself a form of marketing for self-conferred experts looking to make a buck off scared blue-chip companies. That's not to say there aren't bright, honest people plying their trade. It's just that I keep waiting for one of…

Patent Dispute May Halt BlackBerry Sales

Posted: 28 Nov 2012 02:26 PM PST

A patent dispute between Nokia and RIM could ban BlackBerry sales.

The dispute centers around a WLAN (wireless local area network) patent owned by Nokia which allows RIM devices to connect to Wi-Fi networks.

RIM licensed a number of standards-essential patents from Nokia in 2003, thinking the patent in question was included in the deal. Nokia, however, did not think the patent was included in the bargain and on Wednesday a Swedish court agreed, ordering RIM to cease manufacturing and selling any WLAN products until it reaches a royalty agreement with Nokia to do so.

Nokia released the following statement explaining the issue:

"Nokia and RIM agreed [on] a cross-license for…
