While most of these are known to many Google users, it's always nice to see how much Google has grown and how you can put its multitude of services and features to good use.

Stuck at Work This Holiday? Here’s Your Survival Guide

Posted: 22 Nov 2012 03:10 AM PST

If you're stuck working on a holiday, hopefully your tasks are at least somewhat cheery. Still, being in the office when everyone else is celebrating isn't ideal, so we've rounded up a few tips to make the day a little more bearable.

Negotiate, Negotiate, Negotiate

Sometimes, working on a holiday is unavoidable. After all, can you imagine what would happen if every doctor, airline pilot, taxi driver and police officer insisted on taking Thanksgiving off?

That said, you often have a little room to negotiate. Depending on the nature of your job, ask your boss if you can work from home. If that's not an option, inquire about splitting a shift so that you only work half of the…

Google announced today a month-long initiative to promote Arabic on the Internet. The program is called "Arabic Web Days" and aims to increase the amount of online content in Arabic, a language that is under-represented on the Internet.

"Arabic content on the web represents just 3 percent of the total digital content online," Google said in its blog announcement. "Yet Arabic speakers make up more than 5 percent of the global population."

Along with various partners, Google is organizing a series of online and offline events, including Google Hangouts with "industry experts," an infographic competition and the celebration of "Arabic Web Day" on December 12.

Facebook to Slow Down After Move to HTTPS [VIDEO]

Posted: 21 Nov 2012 05:29 PM PST

Facebook will load more slowly than usual for North American users after the company begins to roll out HTTPS to users, a move which backtracks from the speed gained with HTTP service.

While a more secure connection, HTTPS tends to load at slower speeds. Users who have entered credit card information online will be familiar with the lock icon in the browser that denotes the use of an HTTPS connection. (The 'S' stands for secure).

The switch was announced last year in a blog post on the company's website by Facebook's Alex Rice. "We feel that HTTPS is an essential option to protect the security of Facebook accounts," he wrote.

Try Out Mozilla’s Mobile Operating System in Your Browser

Posted: 21 Nov 2012 05:02 PM PST

Mozilla has made a new prototype of its mobile operating system, Firefox OS, available to the public. An early (and still a little buggy) build, the release lets you run the operating system as a Firefox add-on on your computer, allowing you to get a taste of the OS without actually installing it onto a mobile phone.

An exceptionally open operating system, Mozilla's main target for Firefox OS is emerging markets. The company is currently conducting research in Brazil to learn how the middle class in the country uses their mobile phones, in order to customize the Firefox OS experience to meet those needs.

"Much like various versions of Firefox, the overall concept here is premiu…

Makerbot 3D Photo Booth Creates Personal Portraits

Posted: 21 Nov 2012 04:25 PM PST

At the official launch of its NoHo store, Makerbot introduced its own 3D printing photo booth where users will get a monochrome version of their head.

While not as detailed as the one we recently profiled in Japan, the service does take photography beyond the digital realm. And, amazingly, it only costs $25. Customers will sit in the booth for a $5 scan and pay an additional $20 to get their face printed.

This initiative was made possible through a collaboration with Shapeshot, a 3D printing company focused on applications that relate to personalization.

While it is unlikely that this printing method will replace existing printing and photography methods, Makerbot is driving th…

Obama Says Nate Silver Picked the Right Turkey

Posted: 21 Nov 2012 03:15 PM PST

Nate Silver's done it again.

The data guru (or "witch" as some believe) has taken a break from correctly predicting the next U.S. president and brought his magic to Thanksgiving.

Or so the president jokes.

During the annual White House Thanksgiving pardon ceremony, Obama quipped that Nate Silver (who also forecasted that Obama would win the election weeks ago) guessed which turkey -- Gobbler or Cobbler -- would win the race to be the next official National Thanksgiving Turkey of the free world.

"Once again Nate Silver nailed it," Obama said, before gesturing a cross over the turkey and completing the pardon. "The guy is amazing."

Facebook Is No Longer a Democracy

Posted: 21 Nov 2012 01:53 PM PST

Sorry, democracy fans. The world's largest virtual nation, a billion citizens strong, just officially became an oligarchy.

You probably weren't even aware of it, but until Wednesday, you had voting rights on Facebook. The site used to put major changes to its governing documents -- that is, the rules for how it treats your information and your privacy -- up for a vote.

The last time this happened, however, so few virtual citizens came out to vote that it made the U.S. midterm elections (with their average 40% voter turnout) look like a triumph of participation.

In June, the company proposed two alternative versions of its statement of rights and responsibilities, and let users…

Companies are often heads-down with their sights on things like product, sales, international expansion or other pressing responsibilities. Unforeseen circumstances could throw companies for a loop. This is when a risk management firm comes in.

But using a company like Metricstream to predict risk may be a better option. In fact, Twitter recently selected Metricstream's GRP platform to help with its ow…

Sandy Prompts FCC Hearings on Communications Outages

The Federal Communications Commission announced on Wednesday it will hold field hearings examining ways to keep communications systems up and running during natural disasters like Superstorm Sandy.

Lawmakers called for probes into communications outages after Sandy left as much as 25% of cell sites in its path inoperable when it hit the East Coast in October.

"This unprecedented storm has revealed new challenges that will require a national dialogue around ideas and actions to ensure the resilience of communications networks," FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski said in a statement.
