How Amazon Exploits Small Online Retailers

Small business owner Teri Noboa sold with Amazon for a short time in order to bring exposure to her shop, Childhood Way Boutique, a clothing store for kids with holiday fashions and gifts for baby showers. But that decision came with an unexpected price tag.

Two years after moving her shop to its own website, an empty Amazon storefront still cuts into her sales. Since Amazon has better search engine optimization (SEO) than the tiny Childhood Way Boutique, Noboa has some hefty competition -- with her own products.

Noboa, who has spoken out against Amazon on her blog, explains the problem...

Childhood Way Boutique sells a baby product called the Fabien Red Snake Diaper Bag. If you…

YouTube’s 20 Most-Shared Ads in October

Posted: 02 Nov 2012 04:17 AM PDT

1. Coke Zero – Unlock the 007 in you. You have 70 seconds

In an imaginative and hilarious as, Coca-Cola and its brand Coke Zero challenged unsuspecting train passengers to become James Bond for 70 seconds, dodging obstacles and beautiful women to earn free tickets to watch Skyfall.

Click here to view this gallery.

With the holiday season approaching, the world of YouTube ads in October was filled with tech commercials. Red Bull, with Felix Baumgartner and other exciting sport ads dominated the social advertising sphere as well.

But the most shared ad was a James Bond-themed Coca-Cola ad. With Skyfall's release jut around the corner, 007's fans are eagerly waiting for this new exciting movie.

Surprisingly, there was only one Halloween ad that made our Top 20, and just three political ads, perhaps Americans just can't wait for the seemingly endless election cycle to be over.

Thanks to our friends at Unruly for compiling this list.

Google Politics and Election published an infographic that examines the spending by both campaigns alongside each candidate's news-related search interest (in the last 30 days) in the most-watched states.

Pew: Social Media Users ‘Relentlessly Negative’ About Politics

Posted: 02 Nov 2012 02:16 AM PDT

If your Facebook or Twitter feed has been full of hateful, negative comments about Barack Obama, Mitt Romney or politics in general this election season, you're far from alone.

A Pew Research Center study released Friday found that the conversation on social media "has been relentlessly negative and relatively unmoved by campaign events that have shifted the mainstream narrative" compared to mainstream media election coverage.

How bad is it? Across Twitter, Facebook and blogs, neither Obama nor Romney had a single week of more positive than negative chatter.

And while 30% of mainstream stories about Obama and 38% of those about Romney from late August to late October were cons…

Teachers Say Media-Use Is Harming Kids’ Performance

Posted: 02 Nov 2012 02:01 AM PDT

A new study released on Thursday finds teachers are concerned that the amount and types of electronic media that children interact with at home may be harming their performance in the classroom.

Common Sense Media, a think tank focused on children's media use, polled 685 public and private elementary and high school classroom teachers on how children's increasing use of television, video games, texting, social networking, music and other forms of media is affecting their performance in school.

The study found that 71% of teachers polled said students' media use hurts their attention spans in school, while 59% said students' use of entertainment media has also harmed their ability t…

RIP Marty — the Inspiration for Nyan Cat

Posted: 01 Nov 2012 09:15 PM PDT

Marty, the cat which inspired the 8-bit rainbow meme Nyan Cat, passed away Thursday, leaving many heavy hearts in the Internet world.

Nearly 3 years old, the cat was diagnosed with Feline Infectious Peritonitis (FIP), a fatal, incurable disease. Marty's owner, and Nyan Cat creator, Chris Torres adopted Marty in 2010 -- along with another cat, Buster, who died of FIP soon afterwards.

Torres tweeted that Marty began acting strange last week, so he immediately took him to the vet.

"Even with the medical treatment he received he still deteriorated quickly. I've been force feeding him and keeping him warm for three days," wrote Torres.

Marty heavily influenced a lot of my comics an…

Commuters Use Online Carpooling to Comply With Post-Sandy Road Rules

williamsburg bridge sandy

After Superstorm Sandy ripped through the East Coast, commuters in the Tri-State area were left stranded with few options. The mass transit system, crippled by flooding and debris, is slowly coming back on line. Until everything is up and running, however, daunting delays are discouraging straphangers from their regular routine.

Instead, commuters are choosing to drive into the city despite 30-minute lines at the gas pumps, dwindling supplies, three-passenger minimums to cross the East River bridges and plenty of gridlock.

Commuters are turning to the social networks to fulfill the three-passenger minimum for cars entering Manhattan issued by Mayor Michael Bloomberg on Wednesday.…

Smartphone, Tablets Used Far More on National Holidays, Google Finds

Posted: 01 Nov 2012 06:24 PM PDT

People don't just turn on their BBQs for Labor Day -- they also switch on their smartphones and tablets, recent data from Google shows.

Google says it has seen a consistent spike in mobile searches on holidays over the past year, and an even more pronounced surge in clicks on mobile ads.

On Memorial Day this past May, for instance, searches on smartphones and tablets were up 7% and 25%, respectively, compared to an average Monday. Clicks on mobile ads were even more significant, up 9% and 39% respectively.

Google recorded similar numbers on other shopping-focused national holidays, including Black Friday, when smartphone searches were up 17% and tablet searches were up 40…

Wave Riding Robot Survives Sandy’s Wild Waters [VIDEO]

The open ocean certainly wasn't a choice place to be earlier this week as Hurricane Sandy crept toward the East Coast. A floating robot, however, survived the rough waters in one piece.

The robot, called Mercury, is one of a series of Wave Gliders by California-based Liquid Robotics. Mercury was about 100 miles off the New Jersey shoreline collecting atmospheric pressure and wave height data as Sandy battered the coast Monday and Tuesday.

Microsoft's Surface Tablet launched last week to mostly positive reviews, though it hasn't yet attracted the kind of fervor that attended the iPad -- and the company won't yet say how well it's selling.

But the Redmond giant can now bask in one potentially game-changing endorsement from Oprah Winfrey, who has declared the Surface one of her "Favorite Things" of 2012.

First Look: Nokia’s Lumia 920 Camera Takes on a Parade

Nokia's yet-to-be-released Lumia 920 has gotten a ton of hype for its PureView camera. So does it live up to expectations?

We recently got our hands on the smartphone and hit the streets of San Francisco with it for the San Francisco Giants World Series Championship parade, snapping shots of the colorful floats as they passed by.

Almost every photo we took with the Nokia 920 was in focus, despite our often awkward shooting angles and minimal focus time. Much like other smartphone cameras, tapping on the screen will bring your subject into focus. With the 920, however, the camera will take a picture as soon as it achieves that focus, so you don't end up in situations where you focus o…

The photo shows a makeshift Twitter wall, but it appears to look a bit more like Facebook's Timeline. After three days without power, it may all start to look the same though.

"Topic for the day, Cook everything that doesn't smell bad. Yeah chilli!" she wrote.

She even lists current trending topics: #PowersOut, #YOLO and #WeSurvived.

From NY Times Headlines, A Hashtag

New York Times headlines often sound like they are coming from Yoda.

Inspired by those oddly crafted yet distinctive headlines, the Twitter account @NYTPrepositions, a parody account that tweets out their favorite pre-positioned headlines, started a complementary hashtag, #NYTBooks.

On it, people are sharing book titles that they have given a New York Times-style spin. It's pretty fantastic.

According to The Atlantic Wire, the people behind the account and hashtag are Nick Castele, who works at a public radio station in Cleveland, and Rob Mayer, a senior at Northwestern.

Sandy’s Digital Refugees Seek Wi-Fi Access

This morning I made coffee for my brother-in-law before he started a long commute into New York City, then set out breakfast for my two nieces and sister, who were all sleeping in our guest room.

Scenarios like this are being played out in homes up and down the East Coast in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy. As millions of people remain without power, there's only so long people can remain camped out in their homes with no heat or lights.

But there's another utility whose absence is causing huge problems, albeit on a less life-threatening level: Internet.

After breakfast, I fired up my laptop and logged in to work. My house was fortunate enough to have the trifecta intact -- p…

New York Tech Companies Struggle to Rebound After Hurricane Sandy

Posted: 01 Nov 2012 12:55 PM PDT

"It was like a war. People were disappearing and you didn't know where they went."

That may sound like hyperbole to some, but for John Pavey, the CTO of The Huffington Post, Hurricane Sandy brought back memories of 9/11. Pavey, who is based in Princeton, N.J., pulled an all-nighter during the storm on Monday night as the AOL news site suffered an unprecedented outage. By Tuesday morning, HuffPo was back up and running even though the ISP responsible -- DataGram -- wasn't functioning.

On Thursday, DataGram was awaiting the delivery of a generator and had just a "small amount of water" in its basement. A flood in the basement -- which houses its fuel tanks and sump pumps -- prompte…
